No school for students in the South Van
0:03
Community School District all because of
0:05
a network outage. Kids might be loving
0:08
the day off, but the district is dealing
0:09
with something much more serious and
0:12
that is protecting students personal
0:14
information amid this chaos. Thank you
0:17
so much for being here tonight. I'm
0:18
Kimberly Gil
0:19
and I'm Ty Steel. The district confirmed
0:21
in a letter to parents that parts of
0:23
their network are still down because of
0:24
that incident. In that same letter,
0:26
leaders said they're working with
0:27
outside cyber security experts to figure
0:30
out what happened.
0:30
Victor Williams is here now after
0:32
talking with a parent and an expert as
0:34
the clock ticks to get kids back in the
0:36
classroom.
0:38
Yeah, guys, we're here on one of the
0:39
campuses where classes were cancelled,
0:41
South Lion High School. We did speak to
0:44
a cyber security expert about
0:46
potentially what the district is doing
0:48
behind the scenes in response, but the
0:51
bottom line is that parents are worried.
0:53
We're a little concerned and we're we're
0:55
all questioning it.
0:56
Jennifer Lucas is one of the parents in
0:58
the South Lion School District taken
1:00
back by the fact that school wasn't in
1:02
session on Monday.
1:03
We just got emails and text messages.
1:05
So, I found out about this um last
1:07
night, late last night.
1:08
According to a message sent out by the
1:10
district superintendent of parents, it's
1:12
all due to a cyber attack.
1:14
Why wouldn't they not be allowed to go
1:16
to school
1:17
just because of a cyber attack? Now, if
1:19
there's a threat made, okay, I
1:21
understand that. And that's that's what
1:22
the parents want to know. Was there a
1:23
threat being made against the entire
1:25
school district?
1:26
We're told it's a complete network
1:27
outage with none of the phones or
1:29
computers in the district working.
1:31
Pretty much anything that connects to
1:33
the internet is disabled. This is what
1:35
you get when you try dialing the
1:36
district over the phone.
1:38
Number you are calling is temporarily
1:40
unavailable.
1:42
Please try later. Oxom IT CEO Matt
1:45
Lauria says he has an idea of what
1:47
school officials are doing behind the
1:50
scenes.
1:51
Chances are that I mean they've brought
1:52
together I their IT staff. Uh they've
1:55
probably brought in some external cyber
1:57
security experts, legal adviserss and
1:59
leadership and established what we call
2:01
an incident response team.
2:02
As that team tries reversing the issue,
2:05
their chances that the attack may not
2:07
have been fully directed at the district
2:09
to begin with. It doesn't take a whole
2:11
lot uh for these uh for these attackers,
2:14
right? They've got AI systems that are
2:16
essentially out there trolling and
2:18
looking for those weak links, but
2:20
sometimes it just takes somebody just
2:21
clicking on the wrong link.
2:22
Jennifer just wants her son back in
2:24
school as soon as possible.
2:26
They said that, you know, it could go on
2:28
for a few days, so there's really no
2:30
answer to when the kids will go back to
2:32
school.
2:34
And school is going to be closed at
2:36
least until Wednesday. We want to give a
2:38
special shout out to Giovani Boswell as
2:41
well as his father Craig. They're the
2:43
ones that supplied us with that letter
2:45
that went out to parents. So keep it
2:47
right here for any updates that we may
2:48
have. Live tonight, Victor Williams,
2:51
Local 4.
2:52
All right, Victor. Thanks. Sounds like
2:53
parents will be eagerly awaiting updates
2:55
from the district. Thanks.
