Yes, I've upcycled that aerosol lid into these fabulous little pots

They're great for gift boxes. I mean, who wouldn't want to receive some jewellery in one of these

And they can last forever on your dressing table. This last one was made over 30 years ago and my mum still has it on her dressing table

So, at the end I'm also going to show you how to make something to match that

so hang around till the end and see what that is. So, let's get started and let's make yours

So, what you're going to need. Well, some sort of lid. All that matters is it's got a flat bottom

Some glue. I'm using a multi-purpose but you use what you've got. Any trim you want to add

And you're going to need your fabric. Some main fabric for the outside and a lining fabric

Doesn't really matter what they are but cotton's work well. You need one piece of thick card and a piece of thin card that bends really easily

And we can just get started. Oh, and a little bit of stuffing if you want to pad out your lid

You'll see later on that that's an option and you could just use some old bits of fabric if you like

So, you've got your pot and all that matters is it's got a flat bottom. So, it doesn't matter what you've taken your lid off or what size it is

That'll just give you a different size pot. So, get your really thick card and take your pot and just draw around it

All you're doing is using it as a template really. And just draw exactly around it

And then cut that circle out. And that's going to form your lid

So, you just want one of those out of your thick cardboard. So, I'm going to write on lid to avoid any confusion later

So, then it's time to think about your thin cardboard. And what we're going to do here

and I hope you'll notice I just use things again and again and again. It's all scraps. It's all using up. It's all about working to a budget

So, I've actually made these for pretty much free. Virtually nothing. So, this time you're going to draw around your pot three times

And when you cut them out, you're going to cut slightly differently

So, one of them you're going to cut exactly on your line

Just like you did before. And this is going to stick to the base of your pot

Now, if when you look at it you think actually it's tiny little bit big or it's sticking out or I didn't cut it perfectly

Just trim it up until you're happy with that to sit on the base

So, again, I'm going to write on it so I know what it is later

The next one, cut it out a little bit inside the line

You want it smaller than the actual pot. So, just keep going around and that's going to go on the lid

So, if you think it's a little bit close in size, again, just go a little bit smaller

And then another one you're going to cut out inside the line

So, I mean, if I had to guess, what would I say

Maybe an eighth of an inch inside the line and then drop it into the pot

If it doesn't drop nicely to the bottom, just trim it up a little bit more. And once it drops in, that one's ready

Again, I'm writing on it. I don't want any problems later. So, you've got all your cardboard pieces except for lining around the edge of your pot

So, just measure it around the outside. Mine's six and a half inches

And then we're going to measure how tall it is. Mine's one and three quarters, but we're going to do the line in one and a half inches

So, you're going to want a piece of your thin card that's, for me, one and a half inches

So, it's a little bit shorter than the height of your pot. And you want it the circumference of your pot, the distance all the way around

So, for me, that's six and a half inches. Now, actually, that'll be a little bit too long

But if you start at that, you can trim it down so it fits nicely in a moment

So, let's just label that up so I know what it is. And that's all your cardboard pieces

So, we can put those to one side. I didn't look at the main fabric. So, whatever you're putting on the outside of your pot, that's what we're dealing with now

So, you're going to use your pot again. And this time, instead of drawing exactly round it

you're going to draw round it and add half an inch all the way round

Now, you'll see I don't do this accurately. I just measure half an inch

usually in four places. And then I'm just going to sketch a line in

And it really doesn't matter what you're drawing on your fabric with because no one will ever see it

So, just draw around half an inch away from the pot. And then we're going to repeat that

But this time, we're going to measure three quarters of an inch away

Now, these are just to make sure there is plenty of fabric

to wrap around our card when we come to use it. So, if you've got it slightly bigger or slightly smaller, it's really not going to matter

But you do want to make sure you've plenty of fabric. So, then cut those circles out

Put them to one side. And we now need a piece of fabric that's going to cover your pot

So, if you can think back to measuring round your pot and measuring the height

we're going to use those for our dimensions. So, you want it the height of your pot plus an inch

And then you want it the distance all the way round your pot plus an inch

So, if you've forgotten that was, quick measure, around six and a half inches, and then add an inch on

This is just going to allow it to wrap and get nice clean edges and everything look great

So, for me, I'm going to make that seven and a half inches long. Again, your measurements aren't crucial so long as it's big enough

But if you get too big, you find you get a bit too much bulk. So, cut out that rectangle

And that's all your pieces for your outer fabric done. So, that's what you should have

So, then you're lining. And you'll see I'm using some old fabric here that was actually used to line a waistcoat many years ago

And it was actually my mum that used it, not me. But all you're going to do is take that lining card

And you're going to cut it so that it's an inch bigger on each dimension

So, it'll be an inch wider and an inch taller. Again, you can see these dimensions aren't crucial

You just want plenty so that when you come to wrap your card shortly, there's plenty to wrap around

And then we're also going to have to deal with those cardboard pieces we've got

So, each one of those, you're going to place it on your fabric

And you're going to cut a circle out half an inch bigger all the way around should be sufficient

And you can see how accurately I'm doing it. I just looked at it and guessed

If you're not that confident, just draw a circle. Okay, so from our lining, we've got those three pieces

So, let's start to build. You're going to get that main piece of fabric, that rectangle

And you're going to wrap it around your pot. So, apply some glue

I'm using a multi-purpose. You could use a fabric glue. You could use any glue you've got, to be honest

Just make sure you do it definitely on the edges. And I put some in the middle just to make sure it sticks nicely

Place your pot so it's about an equal amount top and bottom. And then wrap the fabric round

Now, we don't want any raw edges. So, lift that raw edge back up and just form a little fold

And then you're going to get a really nice edge. Wrap the other one round. And again, take it back and form a little fold

Now, you need to make sure they meet up. You don't want them overlapping. You don't want a gap

So, just take your time. If it won't stick down properly, not quite enough glue, just add a bit more glue

And then press that down. Once you're happy, it's all nice and smooth and you've got your edges, just fold the top in

Now, you've made sure you've plenty of glue on that top edge and just fold it in

If you haven't got enough glue, just add some more now. And at the bottom, you're going to do the same

You're just going to fold that edge onto the bottom. And that'll all be covered up shortly

Now, you might find because it's overlapping, there's not really enough glue

So, as I said, just add a little bit more in. And then press it down

And that's your basic pot covered. So, you can see how it's going to be

Now, I'm going to start covering some of the other pieces. So, take that lining card and you now just need to check that it really does fit

Now, when I put mine in, it overlaps way too much. You want it just to meet up

So, just trim a little bit off and try it again. And they should just meet

And once they do, that's the size you want it. And you're going to stick your lining fabric to it

See, they just meet up in there. And it already doesn't want to come out

So, apply some glue just around the edge of your lining fabric

That'll be enough. You can see I'm getting well down my glue. So, I just have to keep messing about with it and make sure I can get some out

And keep making your pot. So, wrap your fabric round. You want it nice and tight but, you know, you're not worrying too much about that

just as long as it's all flat and smooth on the right side. And then, you're just going to have to add some more glue to those ends

because you've covered a lot of your glue up. And then fold those ends in

You'll find with most of this, you can just keep working. As one bit dries, you're working on the next bit

You can just complete this whole project and then use it straight away

Let's put that to one side. And remember those circles we had of the main fabric

Take the big one and put it to one side. And the smaller circle, we're going to put on that bottom outer piece that we cut

So, it's thin cardboard and it's exactly the size of the pot

So, just put some glue around the edge and fold it over

Put that to one side to dry once you're happy with it. Now, that main piece is not so simple

What we're going to do is get a needle and thread and put a knot in the thread

and we're just going to run a little running stitch all the way around the edge because we're just going to do a simple gather

Now, you don't need to be a seamstress to do this. It's a really simple in-out running stitch and you're just going all the way around

And this is how we're going to get that nice padded effect. Once you get back to where you started

it's time to get your padding, whatever you're using. It really doesn't matter

You don't need to go out and buy toy filling. You're going to put a little bit under the cardboard and then pull the fabric tight

See what you think. If you don't like it, you want a bit more or a bit less

then just open it up and adjust it. You'll see that's what I'm doing here

Still not happy. A little bit more. And then once you're happy with it, you pull it up tight and fasten it off

The best way is to just do a little stitch and then put the needle through the loop

And you'll see I do two just to be sure it'll hold. Cut your thread and that's done

Now, you're going to repeat that for the other two lining pieces and their circles

So, you just run a gather all the way around the edge. You add a little bit of filling and add the card, pull it tight, fasten it off

So, that's your lid. You can see how that's going to work. And then the other one to go in the base

It's up to you how much padding you put in. I put a little bit less padding in the one that goes in the bottom

but that's just a personal preference. And then once that's drawn up and fastened off, we're ready to start building

So, let's put your lid together first. Just take the lining circle and add some glue

Now, you want your glue quite near the edge, but you don't want it squirting out

So, you know your glue best. I know I can go quite near the edge with this because it's a very thick glue

And then place it on the center of the main lid. Press it down

And I recommend, while it dries, adding a heavy weight. I'm going to use this Giant Reader's Digest book

It's mainly what I use it for, to be honest, although it is a good plant reference guide

It's a brilliant weight. Then take your pot and the base that you covered

And again, apply your glue nicely to the edge, but not so that it's going to squeeze out

And then you're going to place that onto the pot. Line it up

Press it down. And a little lighter weight on that one for me. So, once that's dry, you're ready to finish the pot

We're going to glue that lining in just like that. So, what I recommend is to put the glue inside the pot

If you put it on the cardboard, you could get it all caught and get glue where you don't want it

So, just pop it in the pot. Make sure you get some right to the bottom and some near to the top

But remember, your lining isn't coming right to the top, so you don't want the glue right to the top either

So, just work your way around until it's all got some glue on it

And then you can put the base in, but I choose not to. I put the side in first

Now, I also line where they're going to meet up with where the outer bits of fabric met up

And then just push it in. Now, make sure you go to the bottom. Make sure you press it onto the sides

And it should meet up perfectly because you checked. Then I'm going to glue the bottom in

Now, you could have done this first if you chose to. Just a bit of glue on it, and then press it into the bottom

And I just say take your time pressing it in the bottom and make sure you work your fingers around the edge

Your fingernail works brilliantly. Just to get it to tuck under the side lining

And you can see I'm just giving it quite a bit of effort

And that's it. You've got a pot. But to be honest, I don't recommend leaving it there

I think they look a lot better with a bit of decoration, particularly at the bottom

So, you could consider things like trim, like this little set of flowers

Ribbon works really well. And I think that's what I'm going to put around the bottom of mine

So, just cut it to length with a little bit extra so it overlaps slightly

You don't need a massive overlap, but you do want a little bit. And then just run some glue along it

And wrap it carefully around. Again, I'd make sure you start with one end where you started the edge of your fabric

So that all your edges are at one side. So, just place it on and then carefully work your way around

So, it just butts up against that bottom. It's just a nice finishing touch

They also look really nice with something around the top of the pot. I think with this one, I'm not going to bother

I mean, I might put the flowers on, but I think not. A bit too much for this one
