hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:02
how to make your own geometric art
0:04
i'm sure you've seen it in lots of
0:06
different places it's really really
0:08
popular at the moment
0:09
but actually it's really easy to make
0:11
because it's all just based on geometric
0:13
shapes no great artistic ability needed
0:16
so how about getting started with your
0:18
own
0:19
i'm christine of christinescrafts.com
0:22
and this channel is dedicated to
0:23
crafting on a budget
0:25
so what are you going to need to make
0:27
your own you're going to need a canvas
0:29
i'm using a small
0:30
8 inch square one but you can use
0:31
whatever size you like
0:33
some paint i'm using acrylic paint
0:35
because i found this works really well
0:36
on the canvas
0:37
so stick with an acrylic you're going to
0:40
need
0:41
a paintbrush and somewhere for your
0:43
paints i've just got a little palette
0:44
for mine it doesn't matter what you put
0:45
it on
0:47
and you're going to need some masking
0:48
tape or decorators tape
0:51
and some scissors so you can cut it down
0:53
to length although to be honest you can
0:54
usually just tear it but you might want
0:56
some nice neat edges
0:58
so we're going to start by using that
1:01
tape
1:01
to mark up our design so just decide how
1:05
you want yours to look or make it up as
1:07
you go along
1:08
perhaps you want to copy one you've seen
1:09
somewhere but what you're going to do is
1:11
i've decided a triangle at this end
1:14
so you place a piece of tape over making
1:16
sure
1:17
both ends are long enough to wrap right
1:19
around the canvas to the back
1:21
because remember when you hang a canvas
1:23
on the wall like this you can see the
1:24
sides so it's
1:26
really important they're done as well
1:28
smooth it down
1:31
wrap it around the back and make sure
1:34
you get it
1:35
all the way over right onto that back
1:38
face
1:41
and that's it you've marked up the first
1:42
section you're going to paint
1:45
it's really important that your tape is
1:47
down nice and flat
1:49
it needs to be smooth with no ridges at
1:52
all
1:53
and it's worth running along all those
1:56
edges
1:56
really carefully i've found a fingernail
2:00
is a good idea
2:01
just to run along those edges and make
2:04
sure when you go over the edge of your
2:06
canvas
2:06
it's nice and tight on there the last
2:09
thing you want is the paint getting
2:10
under your tape
2:12
now you're going to find when you watch
2:13
this video all the way through
2:15
i had a bit of trouble because i was
2:18
filming it i didn't take enough care
2:20
and enough time smoothing down my tape
2:23
so you will see the problems that arise
2:26
if you don't take enough time
2:28
so i can't stress enough take plenty of
2:30
time to smooth them down
2:32
the canvas you saw at the beginning and
2:35
i will show you again at the end
2:36
is one i did for my blog so i took
2:39
photos as i was doing that one
2:41
did it in exactly the same way it just
2:43
took more time
2:44
and it worked perfectly so as you can
2:47
see
2:48
i've added another tape and you can see
2:51
where they're crossing over
2:52
i decided to trim the end you don't have
2:55
to you can leave the crossover it's
2:56
whatever you're looking for in your
2:58
design
2:59
so i've set myself up two triangles on
3:01
those top corners
3:03
i'm looking at the rest of it and
3:04
thinking now what do i want to do
3:06
or maybe i don't want it all to be
3:08
triangles
3:10
so i'm going to this time start on one
3:13
of the tapes i've already got
3:15
and just run it down from there to the
3:17
bottom
3:18
there's no problem with having tapes
3:20
coming up to other ones it depends on
3:22
what you're
3:23
you're aiming for in your design but the
3:26
same rules apply
3:27
nice and smooth work on those edges
3:31
wrap it around the end smooth it down
3:35
really well
3:36
now you'll see and you'll think well
3:37
she's smoothing it quite a lot but it
3:38
wasn't enough
3:40
so please do make sure you get your
3:42
edges nice and and
3:43
flat because you get a nice crisp edge
3:45
on your artwork
3:47
i still think that's a little bit too
3:49
large for those areas
3:52
so i think i'm going to go there
3:55
you see you can pull your tape across
3:58
you can try it out you're not committed
4:00
to anything
4:01
you can see i've just decided to get it
4:03
right to that corner
4:05
right to the end of that tape and right
4:07
to the corner
4:09
and that's going to give me the effect
4:10
i'm looking for it's entirely up to you
4:14
going right to a corner like that it's
4:16
quite nice you do get a certain effect
4:18
and if you're looking closely at that
4:19
tape now in the middle you're going to
4:20
see a little crease
4:23
this is the problem with filming
4:24
sometimes don't take enough time
4:27
and that's going to cause me a problem
4:29
in a bit so i've tried to smooth it out
4:33
and i'm still being careful to wrap
4:34
around the end now because i've come to
4:36
the end there's a little bit of tape
4:38
sticking out
4:39
i'll just trim that off
4:43
okay just trim that off so that it fits
4:46
flat on the end because that's the
4:48
effect i'm going for i want the paint to
4:49
come right up to the end
4:51
but not to go around the corner
4:55
smooth this one down
4:59
i'm going to allow them to cross over
5:00
which will give me a slightly different
5:02
effect on the end
5:05
and now the question is am i happy with
5:06
it do i need any more
5:09
or am i going to leave it like that
5:17
so i think those areas are a little bit
5:19
too big so let's put another piece of
5:21
tape on
5:22
i'm just going to go from one to the
5:24
other
5:26
so long as the end of the tape is above
5:28
the other tape
5:29
that will work absolutely fine
5:34
nice and smooth so it really is a case
5:39
of
5:39
smoothing everything down really
5:41
carefully now to make sure no paint can
5:43
get underneath
5:45
and to think about paint i've done mine
5:47
all one color
5:48
obviously you can use as many different
5:50
colors as you like this is your design
5:53
this is where you can get even more
5:54
creative maybe you've already penciled
5:56
this out maybe you already know what
5:57
colors
5:58
so make sure they're all smooth
6:02
and then get yourself set up for your
6:04
paint so you're going to need your
6:06
acrylic paint
6:07
and you're going to need something to
6:08
pop it in it's you can just use a saucer
6:11
or a little plastic tray it doesn't
6:12
matter
6:13
and then start painting now the key here
6:17
is to be really careful and
6:20
to run along your tapes every time you
6:23
go
6:23
up to the tape you risk pushing the
6:25
paint underneath so try and paint along
6:27
the tape
6:28
now obviously where one take meets
6:30
another there's going to be a little bit
6:31
of
6:31
pushing the brush up against the tape
6:33
but just do as little of that as you can
6:36
and work your way around fill in one
6:38
space and then another
6:40
obviously i've sped this up you can take
6:42
your time
6:43
see that i'm just working steadily
6:45
keeping away
6:46
from the tape it doesn't matter if some
6:49
of your paint goes on the tape because
6:50
you're going to take that off
6:53
and just fill each section at the moment
6:56
i'm just working
6:57
up to the edge and not worrying about
6:59
going around the corner
7:02
just getting a covering on the top
7:06
to fill this space
7:09
and then the final space i'm not going
7:11
to paint all of it on the top because
7:13
i'm going to use it to be able to move
7:15
my
7:16
canvas so i'll leave a little bit in the
7:18
corner
7:20
unpainted so that i can move it without
7:22
getting covered in paint that's the last
7:23
thing i want
7:25
okay so now i'm going to think about the
7:28
edges
7:28
and to paint those i'm going to need to
7:30
put something underneath the canvas
7:33
i'm going to use these four little
7:34
plastic boxes just because i've got them
7:36
and they fit nicely under the canvas and
7:38
help stop it moving around
7:39
but you just need something to raise it
7:41
up off your work surface
7:44
and then you're going to paint the edges
7:46
again just work nicely along the edge
7:48
you can see where you need to go go from
7:50
one tape to the other
7:53
and then once you've filled that side do
7:55
just look at the top and make sure it
7:57
still looks okay you don't want a ridge
7:59
of paint running along the edge
8:01
so you'll see as i work along i'm
8:03
working on the side and i'm also working
8:06
on the top
8:07
i'm constantly looking at the top and
8:08
thinking i'll put a bit more paint there
8:10
oh i need to tidy up the edge you just
8:13
keep working your way
8:14
you're trying to cover the whole of the
8:16
edge of the canvas apart from where the
8:18
tape is
8:21
so that it's all ready to hang once it's
8:23
all dry
8:26
may also decide once all your paint has
8:28
dried that it's not really thick enough
8:30
so don't be afraid to let it all dry and
8:32
then come back and add some more to
8:34
thicken up the depth of colour
8:38
as you can see just getting around to
8:40
that that last corner now
8:45
i've just decided to add a bit more in
8:46
the middle because i've been adding some
8:48
to the edge sections
8:52
final turn last edge
8:57
you'll see it moves a little bit but i
8:59
was able to just pop it back with the
9:00
brush
9:02
and finish it off and then just leave it
9:05
to dry
9:06
and make sure you let your paint get
9:07
completely dry
9:09
and all the coats on it you want and
9:11
that you've completely finished painting
9:12
before you move on to the next step
9:15
okay can't stress that enough make sure
9:18
it's all completely dry
9:19
before you worry about the next step
9:23
so the next step is remove your tape
9:26
so you're going to have to have a look
9:28
and look for the last piece of tape you
9:29
put on
9:30
and take that one off first so that
9:32
there's nothing overlapping it
9:34
and as you can see you get a beautiful
9:37
straight edge
9:38
and that effect you're looking for so
9:41
you just have to keep looking for the
9:43
next one down and the next one down
9:45
and peel them off now you'll start to
9:48
see here where i haven't got the edges
9:50
down really smooth
9:51
there's a little bit of bleed of paint
9:53
underneath but you can avoid that quite
9:56
easily
9:58
and just take another one
10:01
up there's one on the top of it so then
10:03
i realized i need to take that one first
10:05
and then that's it all the tapes off and
10:08
you've completed your piece of art
10:11
now as you can see mine's not perfect
10:14
but you could always go along it with
10:16
some white paint
10:17
and tidy that up if you're really
10:19
careful with your painting and really
10:21
careful with getting the edge of the
10:22
tape down
10:23
it should work beautifully and be
10:24
perfect just like the orange one
10:28
so good luck with doing your artwork and
10:31
i hope you enjoy
10:32
the process i actually found it really
10:33
relaxing and you can end up with some
10:35
very expensive looking art to go on your
10:37
wall
10:38
for really very little expense so thank
