In this video we are taking you to the far south of Taiwan. About an hour from Kaohsiung in Pingtung County is an interesting town called Donggang 東港鎮. Donggang is an ancient fishing port founded in the 1600s and we are going to show you the best seafood you can have while you’re here. Luckily, we were visiting during the Toro Festival (Southern Bluefin Tuna) where they unload TONS of fresh tuna daily and hold an auction. We arrived at the port at 6am and they had already finished unloading the tuna. This year’s (2020) weight record was over 200 KG!!! We watched as the vendors auction off the tuna at high speeds. It was a lot of fun to watch. After the auction, we went into the nearby Huaqiao Fish Market. This is the market where you can sample some of the products that arrived from the boat fresh and other Donggang specialty items. Before eating, we walked around the market trying some free samples. That included tuna fish floss and Oil Fish roe, as well as Tuna, Marlin and Mahi-mahi roe. We also ordered an egg stuffed fish cake which was a delicious little snack (20 NTD / USD $0.33 each). Next, we wanted to try some TUNA that came straight from the port. We found a shop inside the fish market and ordered Akami (lean tuna) and Fatty Belly tuna, which all came from Donggang. For the lean tuna, we ordered 10 pieces for 300 NTD (USD $10.05). The meat was deep red and the thickness of the slices were perfect. The piece-de-resistance however was the fatty belly. For 2 slices, it cost 340 NTD (USD $11.39). The moment the tuna hits your tongue, it LIQUIFIES. So amazing. Next up, we wanted to have a classic Taiwanese seafood meal. We walked around the market and selected a good size Red Snapper (180 NTD / USD$ 6.03). We brought our fish to a restaurant inside the market to have it cooked Taiwan style, which is steamed with ginger, goose berries and green onions (150 NTD / USD $5.02). We also ordered Taiwan style spicy shrimp (300 NTD / USD $10.05) and clams with basil (250 NTD / USD $8.37). Of course, we washed it down with a Taiwan beer. Yum!
