hey Premier it's John Woodward from CTV
0:02
News this could be for you could be for
0:04
the transportation minister u we're
0:06
following up on the relatively recent
0:08
news that Carfax has warned their data
0:10
shows there could be over a 100,000
0:12
fraudulently registered cars in Canada
0:14
many of them in Ontario with VINs taken
0:17
from uh exported cars uh plastered on
0:20
stolen cars and ultimately resold uh at
0:23
dealerships here in Ontario i wondered
0:25
how concerned are you about that and
0:26
what is the province doing to make sure
0:27
that people customers aren't unsuspected
0:31
customers aren't buying stolen cars well
0:34
before I pass it over to the minister we
0:35
take that seriously like any any crime
0:38
again what I've been saying when we
0:40
catch these people they need to go to
0:42
jail when they don't go to jail there's
0:44
no consequences they think they can
0:46
continue doing this and that's why we're
0:48
going to hire tough on crime judges that
0:50
are going to keep people in jail and
0:52
they're going to pay the price so their
0:53
buddies outside are going to hear
0:55
they're in jail and they're going to
0:56
stop you know trying to uh steal and uh
1:00
scam and weasle people of Ontario we're
1:03
going to come down hard on them but I'll
1:04
pass it over to the minister
1:09
uh thank you very much Premier and uh
1:11
just to add on to uh that first I want
1:13
to thank Carfax for all their work on it
1:15
as well because I know they've
1:17
introduced some new tools to to help uh
1:19
combat that as well uh but from from our
1:22
perspective uh you know earlier this uh
1:24
earlier last late last year actually in
1:26
uh in the last legislative session we
1:28
actually introduced um legislation uh
1:31
for the first time that could fine
1:33
individuals who were um reinning uh
1:36
illegally vinning or committing fraud
1:38
with VINs um up to $50,000 for their
1:41
first offense up to uh and up to
1:43
$100,000 uh as well uh including 6
1:47
months in jail as well so that was the
1:48
first time that that offense had been
1:50
put forward uh it passed the legislation
1:52
so we have always been uh you know
1:54
working not only uh through legislative
1:57
means but also uh my colleague Minister
2:00
Crawford at Service Ontario uh has been
2:02
um working with uh not only the industry
2:05
but internally at Service Ontario to
2:07
continue improving processes and
2:09
verification uh processes as well so we
2:12
can u come down hard on this but
2:14
ultimately uh for us it's about making
2:17
sure that we punish those who do uh take
2:19
part in this create deterrenes through
2:21
legislation uh but also then have the
2:24
resources behind it to be able to
2:25
enforce and also uh combat this which we
2:28
have shown through whether it's um
2:31
provincial police associations across
2:33
the province or our many of our uh teams
2:36
that have autotheft teams that have been
2:39
uh put forward across um Ontario as well
2:41
to combat this you mentioned Service
2:43
Ontario you're probably aware of the
2:45
charges and the conviction of the people
2:46
in Service Ontario registering these
2:49
vehicles uh one of the critics was
2:51
telling us one way to make sure that
2:53
there is some oversight in the vehicles
2:55
that they are possibly criminally
2:58
registering is to have inspections
3:01
physical inspections of these vehicles
3:02
and Ontario is the only province that we
3:04
talked to that said they couldn't tell
3:05
us how many physical inspections they're
3:08
doing of these new vehicles is that a
3:09
problem uh well look um you know I think
3:12
we can look at uh every solution
3:15
possible to this i think uh from a from
3:17
our perspective we've been more than
3:19
willing uh to combat and look at all
3:21
tools possible uh whether that be
3:23
legislative reform to enact harsher
3:25
penalties to deter those uh whether it's
3:27
working with uh police agencies across
3:30
the province and and country to combat
3:32
uh much of the organized crime that is
3:34
involved in this um so you know I will
3:36
definitely uh take that back with my my
3:38
colleague Minister Crawford and and
3:40
continue that conversation uh as as well
3:42
as conversation when it comes to
3:44
minrading across all ministers of
3:45
transportation um and registration
3:48
because oftent times you see it could be
3:49
from from varying jurisdictions as well
3:52
um so look we have no um uh no appetite
3:56
uh to uh to uh to have any mercy on
3:59
those who are stealing these vehicles we
4:01
want to come down hard on them we have
4:02
we've passed legislation we've given
4:04
enforcement a lot of power on that we're
4:06
working internally to increase those um
4:09
provisions in which we can uh capture
4:11
those who are trying to commit this
4:13
fraud um and so uh we'll continue to do
4:15
that and uh put forward more legislation
4:18
that will help prevent it and any tools
4:20
possible thank you that's great thank
4:23
you you're you're bang on you You can't
4:26
manage anything unless you measure it i
4:27
promise you they're going to be measured
4:29
and throw these guys in jail too for a
4:31
few years teach them a lesson
