This mysterious 24-year-old bourbon came from a Kentucky distillery that survived a devastating fire. This whiskey was bottled by Single Cask Nation and spent 12 years of its life in Kentucky, and an additional 12 years aging in Scotland. It retails for $295 and was one of only 1200 bottles. Hey everyone and welcome to Bourbon Bites Whiskey Reviews with a gaming twist
0:05
I'm Clifton and today we're reviewing 24 year old Kentucky bourbon. So while this is an undisclosed distillery that made this bourbon
0:18
we do know it is a pre-fire bourbon. So we don't really know where it came from
0:24
Gigantic flames coming from this distillery fire. Who was making this whiskey
0:29
It has to be a grave, grave concern at this distillery. It's really up in the air
0:34
It's never been announced. That's the whole distillery bill building down at the bottom
0:38
And there's little anyone can do. But we do know that it was distilled in 1994 and bottled in September of 2020
0:47
So we do know that this bourbon aged for 12 years in Kentucky, but then it was actually transported to Scotland for an additional 12 years to age in that oak
0:56
Now there was some time between the barrel aging and the bottling. It did get batted a bit until 2020
1:01
but this was bottled at 47 ABV and only 1 bottles were made So the MSRP on this was which is absolutely the most expensive bottle I ever bought But I know Single Cast Nation has a fantastic reputation so I knew I had to get my hands on some pre 24 bourbon
1:26
But now is the moment of truth. Is it worth the price I paid? Let's find out
1:30
Now, color-wise, this is dark. I mean, one of the darkest, you know, bourbons I've ever seen
1:37
which of course makes a lot of sense being 24 years old. Now they did age it 12 years in Kentucky
1:42
and then transition it to Scotland. I know Scotland has a bit more of a moderate climate so
1:47
it's not in and out of the barrel as much as if it had been just in Kentucky for 24 years
1:51
Oftentimes we hear about Kentucky bourbon being a bit over-oaked so I'm thinking that with this
1:56
going over to Scotland it kind of helped mitigate that but we got to give it a nose and see how it
2:01
is. It does smell like an older whiskey. I've had a couple of experiences with some older Jim Beam
2:06
Some older wild turkey. I'm getting some of those similar notes to that on the nose
2:11
There's definitely some oak on the nose But it's not like the older richer oak that I would have expected knowing the age on this
2:17
It's more of a freshly cut oak like almost like a wood chip kind of note
2:21
It something that I do appreciate in a whiskey wouldn expect it from a 24 year old version of it though Now there definitely some berry notes on this I get kind of some strawberry maybe some raspberry but it really like very deserty like a strawberry tart
2:34
but really, really rich. There's, like, a creaminess to the nose. It kind of is, again, very deserty
2:40
So let's see how it tastes. Cheers. In theme with the creaminess in the nose
2:46
this one is creamy, this is thick, this has an awesome mouthfeel
2:50
surprisingly again not as oaky as I would have thought just up front I mean I'm used to the older
2:55
releases from other distilleries being super oak forward but this one maybe that time in Scotland
3:01
did it really well but on the mid palette it's definitely got that leather kind of I always call
3:06
it like a library note it's like going into an old library opening a dusty book kind of that like
3:11
leather bound um book kind of note there I dig that and I think that's a true sign of a vintage
3:16
whiskey and this really expressed itself on the mid-palate. Now finish-wise again it's not over-oaked. It definitely is more of like a dark
3:24
nuttiness to it. Almost like a walnut nuttiness on the finish. It's again not overwhelming. It really is balanced. Wow! Would I have ever thought
3:33
a 24 bourbon would be balanced I definitely didn think so until trying this Now y know I more of like a high proof fan so of course my first instinct was wow I wish this was a bit higher proof But again we talking about something really special something that I not going to get again probably in my lifetime
3:49
So having a chance to buy it at the price I did, it was worth it to me in terms of that
3:54
Not only is it a fantastic whiskey, even though it is a lower proof, it has a story behind it
3:59
And part of what's so great about the bourbon community and just different whiskeys in general is the story
4:05
So I think it's priced fairly because you got to think a 23 year old Pappy Van Winkle goes for a lot more than $295
4:12
So for the opportunity and story alone, I absolutely give this 24 year old Kentucky bourbon from Single Cast Nation my recommendation
4:20
Thank you all so much for watching. Question for you, though. What's the oldest whiskey you've tried
