Tennessee whiskey, y'all
0:04
Hey everyone, and welcome to Bourbon Bites Whiskey Reviews with a gaming twist
0:09
I am Clifton, and today we are reviewing Nelson Greenbrier's Tennessee Whiskey
0:13
So you may recognize the name Nelson's Greenbrier. They are the same people behind the infamous Bellmead line
0:19
including this Bellmead Cast Strength Reserve, one of my favorite whiskeys. Now, this is a sourced whiskey from Indiana
0:26
but this is actually their first release that has their own distillate in it. So it's a handmade sour mash according to the bottle. It's 45.5% ABV, which is 91 proof. And
0:36
according to the back, it's aged for at least two years. Now, this one actually isn't available in
0:40
Southern California. I actually picked this up on a recent trip to South Carolina. It was about
0:44
30, $35. So relatively affordable, but it is only two years old. So let's see how it is
0:50
Now, according to the bottle, they do say that this is based on their great, great
0:54
great grandfather's recipe of whiskey that he made back in the day. Now they do use the
0:59
Lincoln County process which is when they do charcoal mellow the whiskey similar to a lot of other Tennessee distilleries Now we don know the exact mash bill of this whiskey but we do know it is a corn wheat and malted barley mash bill So I imagine that was probably pretty rare back in 1909
1:13
which is when they first started distilling. Now, a lot of distilleries do say, you know, this is my great, great grandfather's secret recipe. I don't know how much, you know, truth
1:19
that holds. I do know that the people at Bell Mead or Nelson's Greenbrier are really, really
1:23
passionate about the history side of things. I've had opportunity to meet a couple of them
1:27
and they just love talking history to you. So I imagine there's probably some truth to that
1:31
You know, they don't release the mash bill, but I'll hold them to it. Now for being only two-year-old whiskey
1:35
it's pretty dark, I will say, on the color at least. Let's go ahead and give it a nose. Oh yeah, lots of corn in that mash bill, I imagine
1:41
It's super sweet, super butterscotch, I would say, is the big note that pops out to me
1:47
Good bit of grainy quality, almost smells like a kind of new-make spirit
1:50
I think it has some youth on the nose here. Maybe it holds up more in the palate, so let's go ahead and give it a try
1:55
Cheers, guys. Not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed in that first taste
2:03
It tastes exactly like you would expect an about two year old whiskey to taste Really really I guess grain forward I do think it has some redeeming qualities I think that the flavor is really balanced Yes it is super corn forward but it not like an off sweetness It pretty you know mellow Sometimes with
2:19
young whiskey, I feel like it drinks hotter than the proof. This, I don't think does. I think this
2:23
drinks right at that 91 proof. I think it's a good proof point for it. I think sometimes when you have
2:28
high proof young whiskey, it kind of is very astringent and very sharp and kind of not as
2:33
balanced. This is pretty, pretty mellow. Like I said, it is very dessert-y. I will say it's like
2:38
a cinnamon, um, like a cinnamon brown sugar pastry kind of thing on the palate. I don't think it has
2:43
much of a finish again, cause it is, it is pretty young. Um, but it's, it's not an off-putting
2:47
finish again. It's not a stringent, like some young whiskey. It's pretty, pretty balanced
2:51
It's time to decide, you know, do I recommend this whiskey? And I got to say at around 30
2:56
$35 being only about two years old, I will say give this a pass for now
3:02
Now that's not a knock on Nelson Greenbire. They're putting some amazing stuff out, especially with the Bell Mead line, which they're definitely
3:08
good at what they're doing when they're sourcing and they're blending. I just think their product not yet old enough for me to really recommend it I think there a lot better whiskeys you can get for the price point than this one Even Tennessee whiskeys that you know the same price but I think you get better product from it Now of course they are a small distillery
3:23
That's going to be a little bit more expensive than, you know, the George Dickles or the Tennessee or the Jack Daniels of the world, but I think it needs more time, and I just really hope they get
3:32
better from this. Hopefully, this isn't the permanent bottling. It's not always going to be the same age. I think they're just working on it. They might have put this out a little bit too early
3:38
for my liking. But I am curious to know if you guys have seen this product in your area. Like I
3:42
said, I can't get it in Southern California, but I did find it in South Carolina. If so, have you
3:45
tried it? What do you think? Do you kind of agree that it's a little too young? Do you think it's the perfect age? I do get to say this bottle design is absolutely gorgeous. I really love the look of
3:53
this. I think it stands out on the shelf in a really good way. Whoever designed this, really
3:57
nicely done. Unfortunately, that's probably the best thing about this bottle. So, but thank you
4:02
guys so much for watching. If you like this video, make sure to hit that thumbs up down below and
