Hey everyone and welcome to Bourbon Bites Whiskey Reviews with a gaming twist
0:04
I'm Clifton and today we're reviewing Forgate Batch 10. So the 10th batch of Forgate is actually a rye whiskey that has been finished in split staves
0:17
Forgate worked directly with Kelvin Cooperage to create two custom barrels, one a toasted barrel and
0:23
one a level 2 char barrel. They then deconstructed these barrels and put them back together with an
0:28
alternating pattern of the toasted and the charred oak. So the whiskey they're starting with is
0:32
actually MGP Rye, the 95 Rye Mash Bill we're all familiar with, but this is seven-year-old MGP
0:37
before it gets put into the finished cask. So we're talking really old MGP Rye. I'm very
0:42
very excited to give this a try. This bottle comes in at about $185 retail, which is pretty up there
0:48
but it's in line with other really older Ryes that you see on the market. So this whiskey is 112.5
0:53
proof, like I said, cast strength, and there were less than 2,500 bottles in total made. So I do
0:58
want to give a shout out to Fourgate for sending me this sample of this whiskey. I had never had
1:02
any of their products before. I hear a lot about them out here in Southern California. So I'm
1:06
excited to finally give it a try. Wow, it's been a minute since I've had a rye that is so rye
1:10
forward on the nose. This does go the direction of like a mint, almost spearmint. Like I said
1:15
this is a seven-year-old rye, so I'm getting a lot of the oak on the nose. Yeah, I'm really
1:19
loving the nose on this one, but I gotta give it a try. Cheers, guys. That's way, way sweeter than I
1:26
thought it was going to be. It starts out very, very sweet, and then you get hit with that spice
1:30
It like a black pepper definitely rye spice as you would expect but then it transforms into a toasted marshmallow kind of note Now those of you that know me know I absolutely love what a toasted
1:42
finish can do on a whiskey. That burnt marshmallow campfire note is something that I crave in a really
1:47
good whiskey, especially a rye. And then that marshmallow sweetness slowly transitions into the
1:53
oak on the finish, and this has got a hell of a long finish. Now as with most ryes, this does drink
1:58
a little hotter than the proof leads on, but I freaking love that. This is definitely not your
2:03
typical watered-down MGP that a lot of distilleries are putting out. This sums up everything I love
2:08
about a good rye whiskey. Not only does it have those rye spices, it's got some sweetness, and it
2:13
has that toasted marshmallow note that is near and dear to my heart. Like I said, this is $185
2:18
but I think it fits in well into the premium rye market. It's a small market, but they didn't price
2:23
themselves out of it. I think if you're someone that's already comfortable paying that much for a
2:26
bottle, you're not going to feel like it got ripped off because you can tell the quality and time that went to customizing these staves, sourcing seven-year-old rye whiskey. A lot went
2:35
into this and it shows in the quality of the whiskey. So thank you again, Fourgate, for providing
2:39
me this sample. I'm really excited to see the other stuff coming from their distillery. They do a lot
2:43
of really cool things with finishing. I'll put their website down in the description below so you can see more about them and this whiskey. But thank you all so much for watching. If you're new
