Bourbon, but make it bacon
0:05
Hey guys, what's up? And welcome to another whiskey review. Today is something completely different for you
0:13
It's still a whiskey review, I think. So today we have Old Major Bacon Flavored Bourbon
0:22
Yes, you heard that right. It does say that it is a bourbon. Now, who knows if they are being truthful with that
0:30
I mean, I feel like they have to be to produce this in the U.S. But it says baconed and bottled in Tennessee
0:36
There's no info online about what distillery this comes from. It just says it's from Branded Spirits Distillery, which is really vague and kind of worrying
0:46
But I saw this pop up in my store, and it was only, I think it was like $23
0:51
And I was like, first of all, I was disgusted. But then I was like, wait a minute
0:54
I like bacon. I like bourbon. So this might be a good combination. And then I thought this could
1:01
make a really good cocktail. I was thinking like a maple bacon cocktail with like maple syrup and
1:06
like this bacon infused whiskey. I had this grand idea for a cocktail with this. So I picked up a
1:12
bottle. As you can see, I've tried it a couple of times, but I've held off on doing a review of it
1:17
but I think it's time. So let's go ahead and pour ourselves a nice pour of the luxurious
1:25
Old Major bacon flavored bourbon. So this whiskey is 35% alcohol, so it's 70 proof. So it's not that
1:34
low proof. You know, a lot of flavored spirits are like half the proof of what they should be
1:40
So it's relatively up there. It's not quite, you know, what bourbon typically is at 80 proof for
1:45
the budget stuff. But it does have a nice color. The color is a little light, I would
1:50
say. And there's definitely some kind of like floating, I guess, oils, which could be oils
1:55
from the bacon flavor. I don't know. There's definitely some kind of like small little specks
1:59
floating along in there Now to be able to call something bourbon it has to be at least 51 corn And it also has to be charred in new oak barrels Now I think what they doing is they getting away with something because they
2:11
calling themselves a flavored bourbon, and I guess that kind of makes them not have to
2:17
qualify for those determining factors because basically, as far as I know, for something
2:23
to be called a bourbon and not have an age statement on it, it would need to be at least
2:27
four years old. So I kind of have my doubts about this. based on the color of it. But you never know. You know, I think they would want to give that
2:35
age statement if it is that old. I feel like that would be like, I'd be like, oh crap, maybe this
2:40
stuff is really good. So yeah, there's no age statement on it. Presumed to be at least four
2:45
years old. But again, the flavored bourbon, I know flavored whiskey is like its own thing
2:49
I had a very similar thing come up with, there's a brand called Not Your Father's. They do like
2:53
Not Your Father's root beer, but they have a product called Not Your Father's Bourbon. Now that is like a vanilla, it's like a bourbon flavored bourbon basically
3:01
So it's like a vanilla infused bourbon. But when you taste it, it's just not, it's definitely not a bourbon
3:08
Like that's what makes me concerned. These companies, these little small craft companies are kind of skirting around the
3:13
laws regarding bourbon, which isn't cool. I know a lot of people would be upset about that
3:17
So let's go ahead and give this a nose real quick just to see if it smells like a bourbon
3:24
It smells like bacon. I mean, that's all I, it's like straight up
3:27
Now, the good thing is it's not really sweet on the nose. I expected this, like the Not Your Father's
3:34
just to be overwhelmingly sweet and that hides the, like the bourbon flavors
3:39
It's not that sweet on the nose. You do get a lot of like behind the bacon
3:44
I've never said that before, but behind the bacon, you get some of the caramel, vanilla
3:49
It does smell a little artificial. I'm going to be perfectly honest. So let's go ahead and taste
3:53
it smells the bacon flavor is nice it smells very natural bacon flavor but let's see if that holds up
3:59
on the taste you know this is definitely better than not your father um that bacon flavor is really good I not gonna lie I thought you know at first I was kind of concerned like wait bacon flavor You know what I give them credit for really capturing the
4:18
flavor of greasy, just good home cooked, thick, thick cut bacon. It tastes like smoked bacon
4:25
Now on the bourbon side of things, that's where things get, they fall a little flat
4:29
I get a lot more sweetness on the taste. And I think basically the order of the taste is
4:36
bacon. Oh, this is good. Sweet. Okay. This seems really sweet. And then it kind of, you have like
4:42
a finish of maybe like a vanilla, but you don't get, there's not enough bourbon tasting notes on
4:48
this bourbon. Believe that or not, I don't really taste like this is a bourbon. It almost comes
4:53
across again as another like flavored neutral spirit. So the only way I'd recommend drinking
4:57
this is actually by shooting it. Like I know that sounds bad, but like, I feel like this is when you
5:01
can give to your like college buddies that are like, Ooh, bacon flavored bourbon. Let's like
5:05
take shots of it. You know, it's not something you want to sip on. And going back to the story
5:09
about wanting to make a cocktail out of it, actually, after I tasted it neat, the first thing I did was I'm like, I'm going to still make that cocktail. So made one once using just this
5:18
bourbon. So I just used this. I used some maple syrup and I did the whole old fashioned routine
5:24
tasted it overwhelmingly sweet, just, just gross, really sweet. So second try, I used about one
5:31
ounce of this and one ounce of like a good like strong bourbon. I think I used like I think I used
5:36
like a knob creek in it and to be honest this still this fake sweetness from this whiskey
5:43
overwhelmed the natural sweetness of the maple syrup. It overwhelmed all of the good flavors in
5:49
the knob creek even if you're putting equal parts. But you know what this has inspired me. I decided
5:54
to make my own take on a maple bacon old-fashioned not using this but using actual good bourbon
6:01
and this is what I came up with. So this is my take on maple bacon old fashioned
6:10
So I'll put the recipe up there. It's pretty simple. I know you can garnish it with a few different things and you can have a little bit thicker cut of bacon but you know what this is just for a quick test I used what I had But yeah let go ahead and taste it This is made
6:24
with knob creek. So kind of similar. Oh wow, that smells so much more. You know what? I thought that
6:29
this smelled like actual bacon, but actually having bacon in front of me, it doesn't smell
6:36
like bacon. This smells like breakfast and I love it. The maple syrup does come through on the nose
6:42
I do get a lot more of that, which again, I used it when I made the other cocktail
6:47
It just, the bacon flavored whiskey just overpowered things. So let's go ahead and taste this and see how it turned out
6:57
So good. This I would serve to guests. In fact, if I were to make it again, I would put actual more bacon grease in it because
7:04
you get the bacon a lot more on the nose. It's very subtle on the taste
7:08
But God, this just tastes like a classy cocktail. This is just dang good
7:12
Like, I could drink this all day. I could probably drink this for breakfast. It's everything I would want in a bacon-flavored cocktail, whereas bacon-flavored whiskey, it just doesn't work on its own
7:24
So let me know if you guys have tried this. There are some kind of good reviews of it online, so maybe I'm missing something, but it just wasn't for me
7:32
I would much rather, you know, take actual bacon and put it in some bourbon, and it makes a pretty good drink
7:37
I mean, I know, like, maple bacon old-fashioned, like, aren't an original creation
7:41
I've seen them on menus before. But it's just flavors that all go well together
7:46
And I think that's what makes it great. So I appreciate what Ole Major tried to do with this guy
7:52
But I'm going to have to give that a hard pass. So let me know what you guys think of flavored whiskey
7:56
Is there a flavored whiskey that's your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. I'd love to try it and give it a review
