Steam bending 1.5" thick walnut to a tight radius.
Apr 7, 2025
Steam bending 1.5" thick walnut to a tight 15" radius is where most woodworkers meet their match - until now. After countless failed attempts, we've developed a prototype system that actually works by solving the three critical challenges:
1️⃣ Precision Compression Control
The secret lies in our lever-roller mechanism riding on a straight support beam. This maintains constant compression throughout the bend while preventing the wood from lifting off the form - a game changer for thick stock.
2️⃣ Wrinkle Warfare
Early tests showed compression wrinkles forming on inside corners, but our iterative design now minimizes these defects. (The complete solution deserves its own deep dive - coming soon.)
3️⃣ The Three Pillars of Success
Hand-selected, perfectly quartered walnut
A steam box that maintains consistent 212°F
This isn't theory - these photos show actual successful bends from our shop trials. The system keeps evolving as we push the boundaries of what's possible with solid wood bending.
