welcome back to another Edition a special edition of inside BBI with John and Eric I'm John mcdevit and with me as
0:31
always senior editor of Big Blue Interactive Mr Eric Kennedy and Eric I long for the days of everything that's
0:37
behind you your shirt how you doing hat shirt background it happened Giants fans
0:44
there was a time when the Giants were in the Super Bowl and meaningful so we want to do something positive it's Super Bowl
0:50
week we don't want to focus on the Eagles being in the Super Bowl focus on
0:56
the Giants and their Super Bowl Glory so this will be great so we decided to do our top five New York Giant Super Bowl
1:04
moments which was hard it was actually we were going back and forth and there's still things some are obvious some maybe
1:11
not so obvious some are for you who are maybe a little bit younger you don't remember back into the into the uh 80s
1:17
pieces which is why a lot of these are actually more in the 2000s so there's a lot there but uh yeah we we were able to
1:24
put this list together and uh it's kind of interesting kind of fun but uh if if you're ready Eric I think uh we we we
1:31
could start right off uh with uh with number five yep let's start with number five you want to announce it we will go
1:38
number five the hosler to Baker touchdown pass right before halftime in
1:43
Super Bowl
1:49
25 hler throws touchdown Sten Baker and he beats the
1:57
main man Nate odms and that was a perfect throw all the way
2:02
to the outside takes a lot of time look at the protection he gets jumbo Elliot doing a job on Smith and then right on
2:08
target is hot Baker and this was a tough one because so the Giants played in four
2:16
Super Bowls that um they won and three of the three of the four were very very
2:23
tight close games and this being one of them and there are so many iconic
2:29
moments from this game that people say well why didn't you include this one why didn't you include that one but to set
2:35
set this up remember Hostetler gets sacked in the end zone and it looks bad it looks like oh my God the roof's going
2:41
to collapse and the Giants um regain their composure go down
2:48
the field and right before halftime this is this play occurs so it's the touchdown from Hostetler to Baker it
2:54
wasn't an easy um play it was both a good very good throw and Baker did a
3:00
really good job of keeping his feet in bounds and it complain and it changed the entire complexion of the first half
3:06
so I think you and I thought this had to be on the list given given the stakes given when it occurred and how it
3:13
changed momentum yeah I mean the if you look at what could have been there was a
3:19
play right before that maybe could have been a much easier touchdown that play did not happen to get his feet in bounds
3:25
the way that pass was the fact that we were down you know 12 to3 at the time a
3:30
field goal 126 you're still in the game but I think Buffalo goes in going wow we
3:37
didn't do a ton in the first half there uh but we only gave up six points to these guys I think the momentum's a lot
3:44
different you look at the other way the Giants would have gone into halftime going we just drove all the way down the
3:49
field the thing they had to do take up time long drive and they did and they were able to get points out of it but if
3:56
it ended up being a field goal that's really flating for a team that knows we
4:01
need to keep possessions to a minimum we've got to eat the clock and you're not going to beat the bills by kicking
4:07
field goal so that touchdown to me was a a big momentum swing heading into halftime and one of the tightest
4:13
greatest Super Bowls of all time and again before the Giants other Super Bowl
4:19
with with the Tyree catch um this was considered by many the best Super Bowl
4:25
and and this was a really important play that changed entire complexion of the
4:30
game it just it it like you just said you set it up beautifully it changed everything and how how the team felt
4:38
coming out of halftime it had to be a kick in the nuts to the bills and it really I think it helped helped us
4:46
emotionally going coming in going into halftime and coming out of halftime and that that Buffalo team they were they
4:53
were churning they had put up so many points through the regular season so many points in the plus I believe if I
4:59
remember correct I'm trying to do this off top of my head they beat the Raiders something like 51 to3 or 51 to something
5:05
um in the championship game heading into the Super Bowl they oh yeah combine their scores in both their playoff games
5:12
it was like I forget what it was almost 100 points or something like yeah they they were we were supposed to lose to
5:17
the 49ers badly in the in the championship game and we were supposed
5:22
to lose badly to the to the bills in in the Super Bowl it was a it was a miracle run before again if you're a younger fan
5:30
it was the miracle run before the other Miracle run the Giants had in Super Bowl 42 so um there are other plays in this
5:37
game um that are that's why it's tough and we may mention one or two more but um be on the
5:45
list but that it was a huge play So yeah so that would be number five so wow
5:53
we're gonna have to make a switch here we're going to jump we're g to jump into a whole different whole different
5:58
Century uh with h number four the game-winning touchdown of Super
6:05
Bowl 42 Manning to burus to win the game
6:10
and Manning loves it buris alone touchdown New York
6:31
and this is as iconic as you can get it the iron the irony is it gets sort of
6:37
overwhelmed by the other play before it on the drive and um there's another play
6:44
on the drive that doesn't get the attention if we were doing underrated underrated plays of Super Bowl history it' be the Steve Smith I was thinking
6:50
the same thing yep you know I think it was third and 11 or whatever it was but that was a very underrated play but but
6:55
this play tell me if I'm wrong and I should have looked this up didn't is wasn't this the only catch Plaxico had in the
7:02
Super Bowl what is it either had one or two catches because he was hurt he came in this game hurt and he was you know he
7:08
had that bad knee and I I was going to look this up before we we I'm going to
7:14
look terrible here no no it's fine I I believe he had I want to say he had more
7:20
he had more than one but it was not many he was very one catch on earlier on the drive didn't he have one catch earlier
7:26
earlier on the drive I believe it was was uh was it before before they went
7:33
forward on fourth down tumer caught the one right before fourth down because he came up short tumer was caught it he came up short um yeah let me let you
7:42
keep going I'll keep keep going on with this so so people think that this was sort of
7:48
sort of like a gimme it wasn't a gimme so the Giants get into the Red Zone and but they still have to score a touchdown
7:56
here the field goal is not going to help them and it's not a gimme that they're going to get in the end zone now everyone's feeling great after after the
8:03
Tyreek catch after the Smith catch but they still have to and they come with with an allout Blitz they send the
8:10
kitchen sink and the route that plaques runs burns the corner who guessed I
8:18
think he was guessing inside um had inside leverage he was guessing inside yep and and it was was an easy pitch and
8:26
catch but it wasn't an easy situation again Phil bellich Super Bowl they're
8:31
coming with an allout Blitz and and why I think it's got to be on this list and
8:36
and here is is it's it's the game winning catch against the
8:43
undefeated Patriots in one of the greatest Super Bowls if not the greatest Super Bowl ever played so it's got to be
8:49
on this list in my mind and the and and and the the TV call is so you know
8:55
awesome and and and I think it's it's got to be on any list that's my opinion so the it's the Sluggo route the slant
9:02
and go and the and the corner bot on the slant all the way you know what's really funny too is we just did number five
9:08
right that that pass from hoser to Baker is a far tougher pass the where it was
9:16
who you're throwing to a guy who's 65 in burus to a guy who's 5 foot eight in Baker and the the ability to get his
9:23
feet down on the edge bur is wide open the corner completely bites on it
9:28
there's a time when you look back at the highlight of this pass every now and then I keep going why did we float the
9:33
ball so much like well that was the thing it seemed like it was up there forever and I'm like oh my God don't
9:38
drop it I'm like exactly I'm thinking the same thing I'm like just I'm like just get there but it's such
9:44
a you you hear a lot like Joe Buck takes a lot of a lot of crap because he and
9:50
Amman and whatever they're easy targets when you're when you're his call you know burus alone that's just I mean
9:58
there was so much there everything about that was like the
10:03
the culmination of the 2004 draft of getting Eli of bringing him in the
10:09
changing of everything just so much in that one moment and there's still another moment actually that's going to
10:16
be later not in the top five but somebody something will bring up that was really just as meaningful if you
10:22
think about the ultimate ending of the game but this was just everything and to answer your what you were bringing up at
10:28
the beginning he had two catches for 27 yards and this two catches 27 yard he
10:34
was really a non-factor for this game and a lot of it had had he had an injury he was playing
10:39
hurt if I remember correctly I think there was some concern whether he would even be able to play uh it was it was uh
10:48
I mean they they thought he would his ability to play because he was dinged a lot he was playoff in that season too
10:56
and in the playoffs too yeah so but yeah that that's it's there's no way you can't have that and I think you and I
11:02
were even thought like you could can if you wanted to there's no reason why you couldn't say this would be the top
11:08
moment in in your Giants you know fandom of Super Bowls of the Giants are in I
11:15
think there are other things that happen that are a little bit more specific and and impactful to the the outcome of the
11:21
ultimate game versus the ending of the game those other things had to occur or something like this play doesn't happen
11:28
and I think that why it's where it is on the list for and plus the the degree of difficulty I mean so this was not as
11:36
difficult as the other plays that we're going to mention so I there's there's a physical element to this too an athletic
11:43
element to this list too and this is lower because it's not as athletic as
11:49
the other place we're going to mention the top three so I was worried too when you go back and you look at the Highlight right first off we talked
11:55
about the ball's floating so it's like taking forever to get there you want them to catch it but burus is a big dude he's tall he's
12:02
got big feet I was like he's catching it and kind of turning towards the sign if you step out of bounds oh my
12:09
God this would be awful but it just I mean it all just worked out but yes that was that's to me one of the most iconic
12:16
moments uh that that I'll never forget and it's number four on our top five list which brings us to number three
12:25
it's the Super Bowl 25 we were going back to 25 and you had mentioned there are different plays at different points
12:30
in 25 that's a big deal Baker's catch was huge it changed the momentum of the entire game but there are some other
12:36
things later on though that ultimately decided whether or not we would we would be in the lead we would take over and
12:43
that's the third down pass in the in the first long drive of the second half the drive the Giants had the ball for almost
12:49
10 minutes of the half where they just pounded down on the bills it's a third and I believe like 16 or 17 I think it's
12:57
third and 13 and and it's the hosler to Mark Ingram and that's on number three
13:04
on our top five list and now they are faced with third and about 13 they have
13:09
the ball at the 32 yd line of the bills here's a huge play 1210 the score
13:15
Buffalo third quarter Hostetler has the ball in the snap throws complete he's got Ingram for maybe a first down he'll
13:22
try to the 20 yes he's got it what effort what
13:28
effort he caught that ball at the 25 and got free of three separate
13:34
tackles I didn't think there was any chance to be able to do it a nice spin move a cut back great athletic play
13:42
incredible play by a receiver up into that point who was okay he was a first
13:48
round draft pick and I think we were happy with him but he wasn't sort of
13:53
this Stellar playmaker or anything like that and um
14:00
it sort of came out of nowhere in my mind for him it sort of out of character just this individual effort the the he
14:08
must have made half the bills miss it seemed like in root to get that first
14:13
down and again a game decided by the smallest of margins that came down to a final field goal in every single play
14:20
mattered and the Giants let's let's be honest here the Giants probably were not the better team the the the bills are
14:27
are arguably the better more explosive team they were supposed to win this game so as you mentioned earlier everything
14:34
depended on maintaining possession of the ball keeping it out of Jim Kelly's
14:40
hands and that crazy offense that they had and getting points on the board and
14:46
that drive combined with the drive at the end of the half the Giants had the ball what it was 18 minutes between the
14:52
two drives yeah they had think of that think actual e game time guys think of
14:57
that that's more than one qu quarter of the game the Giants had the ball backto back drives and that play and there were
15:04
a bunch of third down D third down conversions on that drive and there were third down conversions on the other
15:09
drive and that was one of the big things about this game for the Giants is their incredible ability to convert on third
15:15
down in this in this game and that bills defense had was no slouch they had Bruce
15:22
Willis they had Cornelius Bennett they had a lot of Talent on that defense oh yeah and to make that play in that
15:28
situation was incredible and it it gave it gave again it gave the sense
15:34
of they gave the bills the sense of a little bit of Doom like oh my goodness we're we're in a dog fight here and it
15:41
made the Giants I thought gave us confidence going if we can do that we're we're going to score and we have a
15:47
chance to win this game well in that play too if you if you remember and I and a question I would love to ask you
15:53
know Parcels if we were ever able to talk to them or or anybody who was part of the coaching staff that that would
15:58
know the answer to this you obviously called a play that
16:03
was designed to pick up the first down but if not there Ingram on the crossing pattern was more of a checkdown he was
16:09
not he was no where he caught the ball he's nowhere near first down yardage so you're either relying on him to do what
16:15
he did which is you it's impossible for you to predict to predict that's how that was going to go or you knew you
16:21
might be going for it on fourth down a field goal would give us a one-point lead so I'm curious if we would have kicked it knowing the way the Giants
16:27
were very conservative we didn't take a ton of chances I can't imagine if it was fourth and four fourth and five that
16:34
they go for it there in that age I think they're going to take that field goal take the lead and hope their defense can
16:40
shut shut the bills down but we'll never know but Ingram makes the catch and the first thing that happens is as he's
16:45
coming across so he's catching it going across the field he gets wrapped up on his shoulder pads and around his head
16:51
and he Ducks under and when he Ducks under he kind of spins back now he does this weird sort of pouette the first guy
16:57
misses so now he's moving forward he gets grabbed he's kind of turning now they're holding his leg and he's hopping forward for that first down that he's
17:04
fighting he's fighting when we never seen anything like that from Ingram before no and that
17:09
was like it's too the nail and that was really the big difference between those two teams when you think about it the
17:15
bills at that moment had a chance to just physically shut the Giants down and they couldn't the bills were a little
17:21
more finessed even their defense was a bit more finesse Smith from the outside you already mentioned him but let's not
17:27
forget they had Daryl tally they had leard Smith big hit in the secondary D Kelo another big hitter in
17:34
the secondary but they weren't really big physical play The Run guys they were guys that would play back the other guys
17:40
were more speed guys up front so to miss those tackles and it was the tougher Giants grinding stuff out that just kind
17:48
of gave the momentum and I I thought that was a huge play by Ingram probably the signature play as a giant for Mark
17:55
ingr oh it was and I remember when first getting on the Internet when
18:02
it became a thing and people were first starting to discuss um free agency and
18:08
and players on other teams again this is the the very beginning of the internet and when you saw other teams fans talk
18:16
about Mark Ingram they would go oh he was that guy in the in the Super Bowl that made that play So they all
18:22
automatically thought you know fans from other teams automatically when they thought of Ingram they thought of that
18:28
play stood out to them as well too now Ingram actually that that play actually caused
18:34
him to have I think he had a really good we don't like to talk about it because it was a ray Hanley team but I think he
18:39
went on after that year that sort of spurred him to one of his better Seasons but that was that was it was a play that
18:46
came out of nowhere it was it was if it doesn't happen the Giants probably don't win the game and it was athletically
18:52
there are a few plays that in a Super Bowl history that you can look at and go wow what an individual effort like that
18:58
and and critical so all these moments combine relevance in terms of what was
19:04
going on in the game and and then you know the ath the top three the athletic ability of the player and it's something
19:11
that Steve Sab of NFL films has talked about before the Romance of the play you know given the whole what's going on in
19:19
the game what's with the significance of the moment that type of thing and and it was a very big play because of that
19:25
absolutely and uh again you know if you you look back on it I I think it's it's signature of Mark Ingram the only other
19:32
play for Mark Ingram I think that you could say is a signature play for Mark Ingram's career was not with the nework
19:38
Giants it was actually when he was with the dolphins on the fake spike by Marino it's it's it's Ingram who makes that
19:44
catch so really this was the play and and you're right you you brought it up before too this was a a first- round
19:51
draft pick for the Giants something different the Giants went in a Direction they didn't they were always if you go
19:56
back through the through the 80s and their draft yes we did in 82 they went running back
20:02
running back which we one and then we took another one Joe Morris we had Butch wolf then Joe Morris but lots of times
20:07
it was LT the big Defender then you went um we went a safety with Canard in 83 84
20:15
was a linebacker and an offensive lineman 85 we were a running back again again back still the physical play we
20:21
didn't go receivers were not were not a thing for the JS they didn't really care about that they wanted size they wanted
20:27
to be bigger stronger more physical the other team and they had that 87 draft which was a another cluster draft so the
20:32
82 draft was a cluster draft with wol folk and Morris and the cluster draft in 87 was three wide receivers in the first
20:39
four picks and then 88 was the offensive lineman back to back right Elliot Moore
20:44
so you had the three receivers and two of them were big contributors in that Super Bowl Mark Ingram with his play
20:49
there and he had a number of other plays in that game I think he was the leading receiver in the game and then you had
20:55
Baker's touchdown Which we already covered so so that's our top or I should say that's five through three as we head
21:03
into the top two I think we should pause for a moment here and let's let's look at some of the ones that we thought
21:09
about the honorable mentions of of our top five they were just on the outside
21:14
just not enough to to to place them so our honorable mentions three of them all right well
21:21
the problem is is we could have honorable mentions to our honorable mentions so you have four Super Bowl
21:26
wins and you could pick so I think we had to include and this was really tough to leave off the list was
21:34
the Flea Flicker in Super Bowl 21 now in the Super Bowl the player who was once
21:41
considered not good enough to make the team made one of the game's biggest
21:48
plays pitch Mar turns around back to Sims on the Flea Flicker Sims is looking way down field he's got a receiver
21:54
complete down to the 10 five touch I believe I the now at the time the Giants
22:04
were leading 19 to1 I believe and so this was sort of the dagger in the heart of because on the following play Joe
22:11
Morris scores and puts the Giants up by more than three scores but the the the Giants are
22:17
starting to take control of the game they' come out a halftime down they
22:23
score a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half they get the ball back they get a field goal and this they
22:30
get the ball back again and this is towards the end of the quarter and this this to me because it was a Flea Flicker
22:40
because it sort of cemented the wind I thought this was El you know worthy of
22:45
being included on the list the only reason I I I personally couldn't put it above some of these other ones is
22:51
because the Giants were it was on their way to a blowout and this was the thing
22:57
that caused that to be become a blowout type of a game and that and it's so to me it just missed and then you had the
23:04
the fact that it's it's how irony is probably not ironic is probably not the
23:09
word I'm looking for but just how fitting is it that it's it's a Flea Flicker coming back to Sims who's thrown
23:16
it to makuni a receiver that the Giants didn't even have on the roster at the
23:22
beginning of the season they traded with Green Bay to get him back because Parcels was fuming about the Giants punt
23:29
returns he didn't care if makuni Fair catched every single punt that came through you just don't put the ball on
23:36
the ground and that's why we got a a returner who was going to be secure with the ball we traded to get makoni back he
23:43
has that big play so close the the uh the moment when he gets tackled where he's like oh I almost
23:50
scored like I almost have my and he gets a Super Bowl touchdown later later we could have had that as an honorable
23:56
mention too but again the game was a blah but the yeah that the whole thing it's makoni he's pounding his fists on
24:01
the flip you know he flips over it's just a cool it's a so when you think back to Super Bowl 21 people think about
24:09
to the George Martin sack they think about the goal line stand they think about and the goal line stands on our
24:14
honorable mention too isn't that one of our honorable mention that is on goal line stand in Super Bowl because that
24:19
was a big and I'll let you set that one up sure so the goal line stand is here here we are in the first half the the
24:25
Broncos are in many ways the Les are playing much better than the Giants in in the first half and they had a chance
24:32
here a touchdown here really puts the Giants on Heels now do I think the Giants don't ultimately come back and win no I think they would still find a
24:39
way they that team was was pretty darn good but you don't know that things change and in a moment if if you were a
24:45
Broncos fan this is the moment the game changed for you yes was they could have scored and there's a play where Elway is
24:52
rolling out he is rolling and any other team I think he scores but the Giants and their linebackers and LT was the guy
24:59
LT chased him down and kept him from being able to kind of cut back and get into the end zone he kept him out that
25:05
goal line stand makes the Broncos settle for a field goal and at that point I think the Giants knew and who your
25:11
chance and who makes the plays it's LT on first down right and it's and then
25:18
the other two plays it was was it was Banks and it was Carson wasn't one of the other two yes all basically all the
25:25
iconic linebackers and why that play why that goal line was so so important too
25:32
is what happened right after it they missed the field goal right right it was the shortest field goal miss I think
25:38
still in Super Bowl history um maybe I I I don't know that for sure but at the time it was the shortest field goal miss
25:45
and at the time the kicker before had hit the longest kick in field goal history at that time think it was was that car Rich car Rich car yes and so
25:53
they missed so the oxy I mean the the oxygen just got sucked out of the of the
25:58
Broncos because they not only didn't get the touchdown but they didn't get they didn't get so that was it and then um
26:05
you had an underrated play that you wanted to mention from from um Super Bowl 42 too which it's we' put this in
26:13
the underrated uh underappreciated play yeah so burus alone touchdown boom that's a
26:21
huge play the game is not over the Giants kick off the Patriots get the
26:26
ball you've got Tom Brady you've got um you've got God you've got uh Randy Moss
26:35
you've got a team that was undefeated you just and they don't need a touchdown they don't need a touchdown yeah they're
26:41
they're they're they're a field goal they need a field goal they there's a lot on the line here and
26:48
for the Giants to come out and that first snap and Brady's dropping back and Jay Alfred just comes through his
26:54
signature play by the way his it is it's be Giants fans will always remember JL
27:00
for just for one play it's not a uh it's not a coverage sack it's not a we just
27:06
kind of swarmed to gut to him Jay Alfred blows through the middle of the line and absolutely buries Tom Brady it's almost
27:14
like a similar hit to Jim Burke did on Joe Montana I mean was that bam you know it was like oh it was there was like no
27:22
moment for Brady like you would think well how man Brady should have just gotten rid of the ball he couldn't there was nothing he was going to do he drops
27:27
back and here comes Alfred right through and he just buries him it was that moment where I think you knew the Giants
27:34
are going to win now what was scary is still that Brady did get that one pass off that traveled way down the field
27:41
thank God it I never thought he had that arms that kind of arm strength that came closer than you know that was that was a
27:47
big play to break up that pass that was um was Cory Webster and who was the safety and I can't remember who the
27:53
safety was but they that was that that might have been M quarters back
27:59
think quarters it was um cuz they were playing they were playing Big Nickel at that point yeah they um but that that
28:05
thing had a chance yeah it was I couldn't believe how far that traveled so that sack that sack was huge though
28:11
that took everything that New England might have decided to do maybe a couple short passes we'll spike the ball we'll
28:17
go again that took all that out of the equation you were now in Long Distance you had to get a first down they
28:23
couldn't just Dink and dunk they had to move the ball down the field that changed the ending of that game that was
28:29
a huge moment you know one of my favorite moments of that that play too is when they took the shot of the Giants
28:35
um sideline and and sha aara looked like he was about to pass out he was hyperventilating
28:42
so I he was like representative for all of us we were like oh my God we're so
28:47
close just end this thing just please end this thing it we're so close there's
28:53
uh there there's one other moment it's not on here we didn't I didn't say it head time but I just want to I want in here it has nothing to do with the
29:00
actual games and what happened but it's from the game and I will never forget this moment Super Bowl 21 game is over
29:09
players are on the field they're going all around the camera's on Phil mcuny Phil mcuny is moving down the field he's
29:15
running he's he's got his helmet off he's heading towards a group of other people he kind of looks down and stops
29:20
and he turns around he goes back do you remember Gun there's a gun security person drops a gun on the field Maki
29:27
picks it up the camera got him holding the gun I'm like Oh's a terrorist he's got a gun I'm like oh my God that was I
29:36
mean talk about like whoever that was I don't know how many reprimands they probably got for not securing your
29:42
weapon but I mean here's Phil Ma just he's like oh he's likey holding it like this it was it was yeah I'll never
29:49
forget that moment but yeah and I want to mention two two things from that game too that kind of one is an honorable
29:54
mention I know said we only do three and one is my when of my favorite moments from that game honor will mention the
30:01
Jeff rutage quarterback sneak was gigantic in that game no one ever wants to think about it because it wasn't
30:06
glamorous or anything but the Giants were losing the game they get the ball coming out of halftime and the and the
30:12
Broncos stop them they stopped them yep and that was that that was the that was
30:18
a risky call I think they were still on the Giants side of the field and um that
30:23
if they didn't get that and they almost didn't get it I mean it was it was close and that went on of course that opened
30:29
the floodgates but if the Broncos get the ball there who knows what what happens in that game and my favorite
30:34
nonf football moment is so we talked about the Flea Flicker
30:40
Joe Morris scores on the next play and it just felt at that moment the Giants
30:46
were going to win the game was at the end of the very end of the third quarter and they score they show the giant sideline
30:52
everyone's celebrating and Bill Parcels comes out and starts going scream in at
30:58
at his own players like blank blank blank this game isn't over and it's one of my favorite plays because as a fan
31:05
watching the watching that game at the time I was like this isn't over this isn't over and if you grew up in the era
31:12
of parcels you understood the mindset um of it's not over because we'd
31:17
been through even back then we've been through some heartbreaking losses where the other team had come back and won 88
31:24
85 88 85 the cowboy games things like that so it's not over and he was like stop it
31:33
and and I was like that was still to this day I if I go back and watch that things from that game I I just watch
31:39
that scene where he yells at his own team saying it's not over and I just that's what I loved about parel you know
31:45
he was like it that's why he was a great coach and the other the other little Aster for Super Bowl 21 that was the
31:52
start of you know you just won the Super Bowl what are you going to do now I'm going to Disney
31:58
it was the first one or Disneyland whichever one it is um and that and Phil Sims was the first person to do that so
32:04
that's that's interesting did you ever see him interviewed about that afterwards cuz he didn't know what he was really was supposed to do and they
32:11
kept asking him even in the locker room what are you going to go do now and he was like what the hell you know stop all
32:18
these people in here are going to wonder what the hell's wrong with me that I keep saying I'm going to disy so yeah that was that the the fans
32:26
that are too young to remember Super Bowl 21 all you need to know is there was a belief that things like
32:33
that didn't happen to Giants Giants are were a team that the Super Bowl was an Impossible Dream you weren't supposed to
32:40
be like the the Redskins and the 49ers and these other teams and the Miami
32:46
Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers th those were the teams that went to the Super Bowl the Giants never went to the Super Bowl so to have that happened for
32:52
the first time it was you were I don't I don't speak for you but I was like I was
32:57
was on Cloud9 I couldn't believe it was happening I was like and the second and what was great about that game is the
33:03
second half of that game you could breathe it wasn't you knew they were going to win and you didn't get that
33:08
feeling a lot with the Giants especially in in in the Super Bowl all things so I
33:15
remember sitting there being like you know oh yeah and and I'll say too I it
33:21
was um that was my senior year of high school um I had gone through a number of
33:27
years of of really taken a lot of [ __ ] as a as a Giants fan especially you know
33:32
first through the 70s early early 80s yes we had 81 but 82 was me 83 was bad
33:40
um and I had I was surrounded by Cowboy fans and then uh 49er fans came out of the woodwork you know they had their
33:45
bandwagon fans from where I grew up in Vermont um and I was a fan it's weird that's the time frame I was a fan of
33:51
other teams and I won't say all of them here because I know a lot of you are not fans of the other teams that I'm a fan of but I was a fan of other teams in
33:57
other sports and like so I I had dealt with a lot of teams that weren't very good and all of a sudden a bunch of my
34:02
teams got good at the same time I was a Georgetown fan for college basketball they had to Patrick Yu came on and they
34:09
they were winning but it was the Giants and my senior high school to finish that To Be A Champion there was just so much
34:16
about that and even getting the Super Bowl I was still nervous even though I I knew this team was good and it was when
34:21
we beat the when we beat the 49ers and beat them so handedly I'm like okay and
34:27
then Washington rolls into town and they I mean you could bring up the wind and everything yes it affected everything
34:33
but the Giants were never going to let Washington win that game I mean it was 17 to nothing if it wasn't a windy day
34:38
it might have been 40 to nothing that the Giants were not going to let Washington beat them and then it came to
34:43
to the Broncos Super Bowl was different because you're just like oh my God what could go wrong as a Giants fan I've seen
34:49
this for so many times what could go wrong what could go wrong and then was tight and the first half was kind of
34:54
scary people keep forgetting the Giants had the one of the you know a little bit of their points in the first half was a George Martin safety right you know I
35:02
mean other than that we had the one touchdown on the drive and that was it and it was kind of like and George
35:07
Martin safety should be an honorable mention too I mean but that's the problem coming up with this list so um
35:12
there's so many by the way a question is that the furthest away from the goal
35:18
line I've seen somebody get a sack kept backing up that was yeah that was a long
35:24
I don't think I've ever seen sa that far but yeah yeah I agree with you that's actually a good point so let's keep this
35:29
moving let's back to our top five those were our Honorable Men the goal line stand Jay Alfred the Flea Flicker we
35:36
talked about a couple other things that just came up uh that we were thinking of uh our our top five coming back again
35:41
number five was the hosler to Baker uh in Super Bowl 25 we have Manning to
35:47
burus for the game leading score ultimately the game winning score in Super Bowl 42 and then hosler to Ingram
35:55
uh earlier in in Super Bowl 25 so not the end of the game but a drive that that big drive after the second half
36:01
that third and 13 that he's able to break a number of tackles just a signature play and now here we are in
36:07
our top two and number two Eli Manning to Mario Manningham
36:13
Super Bowl 46 Forman Rush Eli throwing into traffic
36:21
on the sideline they're going to roll it a catch by Manningham along the sideline they're
36:27
going to got the ball at the 5050 yd line got to have it given again the
36:34
significance of the they're starting way back they got it's just it's just like
36:39
42 they've got they've got to they got to go down the field but it's even far further the Patriots the way this game
36:46
started off it started off great look it started off strong from the Giants then it started getting away from us and
36:54
there were a few plays in there that got could gotten really scary like that one where Edelman got turned around and
37:00
didn't catch the pass we could have put another honorable mention where Blackburn gets the interception on the
37:06
jump ball to gronowski that could be on here too but the Patriots are up and we
37:11
got to go down the field and E the the the thing why this play is
37:17
so great in my mind is this is it's not just the fact that when it occurred and it gave them it gave them that sense of
37:24
inevitability that they're going to score again and win the game but it was a perfect pass maybe the most
37:31
perfect pass that Eli's ever thrown he couldn't have handed it to Mario
37:36
Manningham any better if he had been standing on the sidelines and just placed it in his hands it going have be better and then also Mario Manningham
37:44
what a fantastic job of keeping his feet in bounds with two defensive backs all
37:50
over him keeping his feet in bounds and still coming up with a catch too and I think because it's two two players made
37:57
really great plays the significance of it when game-winning Drive I think you
38:04
got you got to include it and it was it's one of Eli's signature pass moments
38:09
if you've ever heard him talk about that play the degree of difficulty of that
38:15
pass is probably top charts for him as far as in his
38:20
mind where he had to step forward the fact that he has to make a play pretty far down the field we're not talking
38:26
like a 10 yard away or just an out it's down the field and even more
38:32
so Eli is Eli Mario Manningham in many time cases and times in the regular
38:39
season he didn't have the best hands of our wide receiving Corp but in the playoffs he came up big with some major
38:46
plays and to run down the field to have a pass coming in that's kind of crossing over your head so you're now turning
38:52
outside to keep your feet as you're turning and to keep them in bounds the amount of the degree of difficulty of
38:58
that pass has to be one of the greatest passes that you we've we've ever seen as Giants fans and to be done in a Super
39:03
Bowl has to be on this list the quality of the pass and the quality of the footwork and if you haven't seen it
39:09
close go back and watch Manningham footwork on that catch it's even the
39:14
Patriot announcers are like oh my God he caught it they couldn't believe it and and everybody who saw because when it
39:21
first happened you didn't think he really had it you know it was like oh God they're going to show replay and
39:27
it's going to show but it was like oh my God and even the Patriots were like oh my God Tom Brady's on the sideline they had a miked up and he's like he caught
39:34
it he again you could tell the errors starting to come out of the Patriots
39:40
here here we go again it's a dagger to the heart and that's that's the that's the the key element to a lot of these
39:46
plays here were they were daggers they were psychologically they were huge plays in the game too I guess I would
39:53
put that in there so which brings us number one now yeah I I I agree and before oneof a they are they are linking
39:59
plays to the the result of what happened it's it's not the that was a score and
40:05
that's he that's the touchdown the game's over that led to everything else that's going to happen that led to
40:10
anything else that could happen on either side of the ball it's something that in other shows we will talk about
40:17
why the change in just one thing can have a massive effect across your team
40:22
this is one of those things with Eli the players on the sidelines new when pass like that happens and Manningham makes
40:29
that catch you now you're fully believing you know we've got this we've got this guy that's what I mean you
40:34
didn't you feel it did you feel it I mean at first you it looked it looked
40:39
like he was out of bounds when he first caught you're like there's no way and then the replay you're like oh my God he's got you feel like that that play
40:47
happened didn't you feel like we were going to win the game oh I absolutely I I knew right there I knew it was it was
40:53
the David and Goliath thing again except for the fact that Goliath didn't realize that he wasn't he wasn't David slinging
41:00
slinging a stone here this dude was showing up this was Eli Manning he he's showing up with an Arsenal and once we
41:06
had that you knew and you knew the you knew the uh the Patriots were probably feeling the same thing exactly the
41:12
Patriots knew it too that's why that play to me is number two and it would be number one
41:19
except John except for number one sorry I was I will say this I'm gonna take the time out real quick I was responding um
41:28
Stephen Baker had just messaged me unfortunately we were planning to sub him in today he's been he's been a
41:34
little under the weather so he unfortunately couldn't make it this morning we're going to reschedule him for another time so number one on our
41:41
list then the play of all plays the ball the helmet everything that goes together
41:47
we are talking uh Manning to Tyrie Super Bowl 42 you can't pick
41:55
anything pressure from Thomas off the edge Eli Manning stays on his feet airs
42:03
it out down the field it is caught by
42:10
Tyrie inside the 25 42 you can't pick anything else it's it's arguably the
42:17
best play in Super Bowl history Steve Sable said it after it occurred he said
42:24
up until that point he had the John Riggins play um when the Redskins beat the Dolphins
42:30
again because his his criteria was athleticism um the relevance of the
42:38
moment and the Romance of the moment and you have two guys making amazing if they
42:46
happen if tyriek if that Tyrie makes this play by himself it's an incredible play if if Eli makes this play by
42:53
himself it's in incredible play but both of them made the made incredible plays on the same play and it's the it it it's
43:02
the signature play in the greatest upset in Super Bowl history the Patriots for
43:08
people I think still kind of forget this the Pat this was not this was supposed to be their coronation this game wasn't
43:16
even supposed to be close right this was supposed to be a blowout and it looked like the Giants
43:25
were going to steal it in the Patriots go all the way down and score too easily
43:31
and you're like God damn it and they they they scratch and Claw just
43:40
to get into this position where they're in and it looks like Eli sacked it looks like the play's over and somehow Eli who
43:46
never gets out of way from any sack gets out of it and then he
43:51
runs resets and he does the one thing you're not supposed to do throw late back over over the middle of the field
43:57
he throws late down the field and and I and at the time I'm
44:03
like throw it because because you just you got to get rid of
44:08
the ball you can't take a sack here and then I'm thinking oh my God this is going to get picked off and then I couldn't believe it so I don't know what
44:14
your reaction was kind of like oh God no then I'm like you gotta be well you
44:19
think about it too this is your number four maybe even five if you really want to go there wide receiver so you're
44:27
throwing it to the guy I mean you're not you're not throwing to burst you're not throwing it to tumor you're not throwing it to Steve Smith this is David Tyree
44:34
who had horrible week of practice a terrible week of practice dropped everything in practice leading up to the
44:39
Super Bowl well and let's not forget he also he also scored a touchdown in this game which is which is crazy to think
44:45
about on a very good play good throw and an excellent throw too and in a
44:51
time all that stuff that's happening that you just mentioned Eli and he's not known for getting away from stuff and he
44:57
can sometimes just goes down and at a time he's kind of clumsy you know and at
45:02
a time when referees were quick to call in the grasp and you could see the ref
45:07
running in he almost ready to call it can you imagine if that had happened can you imagine if that had happen makees
45:14
you wonder what what has you know what plays in in football history might have been taken away from us because of a
45:20
whistle oh absolutely and he gets away and then the pass and even more so he's
45:25
he's out jumping um Rodney Harrison when he catches it and you you look at it
45:31
he's got like three fingers on the ball he's holding the ball to his helmet the whole time as he's coming down the ball
45:38
is inches from hitting the ground again at a time when review if that touched the ground probably would have said
45:44
that's incomplete now you can kind of be grasping the ball and holding it if it touches the ground it just can't bounce
45:50
or anything like that you have to have control of it but he it kept it from hitting the ground while being tackled
45:55
while someone else is trying get the ball that has got to be the most incredible play that was one of those
46:01
ones too where you're just like when it happened I knew at that moment we're winning this game when it happened I was
46:07
like get the snap off because I thought they were G to call it I thought they were GNA say he didn't catch it so I was like Snap It snap it snap it and I think
46:14
they called a timeout and I'm like oh sh I think like I was like oh crap they're gonna they're gonna reverse this because
46:21
like you said he did he kept it off the ground I I don't it's just it's pin to the top incredible I I don't know how
46:28
you pick another play in Super Bowl history over that I know that there's been great plays in Super Bowl history
46:34
but I don't again given the context given the opponent given the situation the game-winning Drive the the I I I
46:41
don't it's and it's obvious and when we did this everyone out there you knew this was going to be the number one Play
46:47
because it has to be the number one Play yeah John and I came on here and we did this and we didn't have this number one you guys would think we're idiots yeah
46:53
and you know it's really funny there's a number of things that happened during that entire Drive even with that play
46:59
there is a weird clock issue there's time that didn't go off that does kind of go off that it works in our favor but
47:07
it also doesn't work in our favor there's a point where Eli could have been where he looked like he fumbled the
47:12
ball yeah there there there's a pass ran there's a pass where aanti Samuel should have intercepted it it went right
47:19
through his hands you're just like I don't know if he would have come down in bounds or not but that was a bad pass
47:24
there was a couple thing it's just like all the things that could go wrong kind of were there but they just didn't go
47:30
wrong and we have to do a BBI throw out to anok out there who's infamously was
47:37
quoted during the game thread saying what the blank is David Tyrie doing in
47:42
the the game and then like two plays later or whatever that happens so he
47:48
will never live that one down so yeah that that was yeah yeah just a fantastic moment and we'll always have that and
47:55
and that's one of the reasons why when Eli gets into the Hall of Fame because number the number one and number two
48:01
plays on our list are there and he was Super Bowl MVP twice Eli will be in the Hall of Fame it's just a matter of just
48:08
a matter of time um it'll be be because of plays like this I so so those are
48:15
those are our top five you might have a different top five feel free to to comment yeah we did obviously you can
48:20
only have so many top five moments there are lots of plays that you can include there's lots of things our honorable
48:26
mention we could have honorable mentioned a 100 plays quite frankly but you have to kind of Whittle it down if
48:31
I'm only going to pick moments in a game so there are some things you could say oh well well you know the Giants you
48:37
know this last Super Bowl or Anderson scoring the touchdown in in 86 and that was kind of like giving them that that's
48:43
a moment or or just the defense entirely with again in the second half against
48:48
the Broncos where we're just just pummeling uh Elway and we're keeping them out you you could pick anything you
48:53
could pick so many different things I would have a hard time picking what my favorite Super Bowl is so my of the four
48:59
that we discussed my least favorite one is 46 because I just didn't like the back in you know now are you're only
49:06
including the WIS yeah yeah I'm not including the other one though I will say this I know people feel differently
49:13
one of my favorite games of all time is the NFC championship game against the Vikings I I love that game oh absolutely
49:20
I just I just love that some people on the site don't like it because they remember what happens against against
49:26
the you but but I love that game that's that's one of my favorite alltime Giants games game are m games are moments in
49:33
time they're not whether you won the championship or not it's that game and if we pick games over years one of my
49:39
favorite games is in 1980 when we beat the Cowboys For the First Time and Forever 3835 on a team that won four
49:47
games who cares but to me that was a big deal because Dallas beat us constantly
49:53
and to see a game that you could put points up that was great one another game and we're not going to do these now
50:00
I just we can't we we went over anyway but I mean I like the giant I like the Giants Chiefs game of uh 1984 I believe
50:07
that was one of my favorite games that we're down like 274 and we end up winning 28 27 that was a Zeke moat had
50:13
like huge yeah that's one of my I've talked about that game with Larry before that's one of my favorite games of all time is that Chiefs Giants game in 84 CU
50:21
that was a comeback they were down two scores and they they they scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come
50:27
back and win the Giants just didn't do that that that was something other teams did the Giants never did that and they
50:33
did it and that was incred but we we go on and on with that so that's our top five We Stand by it we're proud of it we
50:40
know that they're you could switch out a couple of the ones that are on the bottom but that's the ones we came up
50:45
with so you can expect in the near future uh we will have Stephen Baker on he he's uh he felt really bad about what
50:51
happened this morning no problem no problem Stephen I'm going to send him a link I did tell him we did talk about him quite a bit and did make the top
50:57
five so uh with that I think uh like subscribe share with other people please
51:03
have them subscribed the more subscribers the better uh and then comment and then uh what's your top five I'm curious to see so with that Eric I
51:10
think we'll sign off and uh coming up tomorrow is uh is a I don't know I guess it's a game that ends the season that
51:16
hopefully the Chiefs win this the only time I would ever tell you that I want somebody to threee I'm not I'm not even
51:21
