The book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, consisting of only one chapter. It is a prophetic oracle that focuses on the nation of Edom and its impending judgment. The author, Obadiah, delivers a message from God to the people of Edom, warning them of the consequences of their pride, arrogance, and mistreatment of their brother nation, Israel. Obadiah begins his message by proclaiming the sovereignty of God over all nations and emphasizing His justice. He reveals that Edom's downfall is imminent due to their pride, as they have dwelled in the safety of their mountain strongholds and boasted of their own wisdom and might. The Edomites have looked down on their brother nation, Israel, during their time of distress and have even participated in their plunder. God, through Obadiah, declares that He will bring Edom low and destroy their pride. They will be humiliated and their allies will turn against them. Their fortified cities will be easily conquered and their wealth and possessions will be stolen by others. Edom will be left desolate and their land will be inhabited by foreigners. The reason behind God's judgment on Edom is their enmity towards Israel. Israel was chosen by God as His own people, and Edom's mistreatment of them was seen as an offense against God Himself. The Edomites gloated over Israel's downfall and even participated in their destruction, revealing their lack of compassion and brotherly love. In the end, Obadiah prophecies the restoration and triumph of Israel. God promises that His people will possess Edom's land and that His kingdom will be established. The house of Jacob will be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, while the house of Esau (Edom) will be stubble, and they will set it on fire and consume it. The book of Obadiah serves as a reminder that pride, arrogance, and mistreatment of others are offensive to God. Edom's judgment is a warning to all nations and individuals who disregard God's justice and choose to oppress and harm their fellow brothers and sisters.
