A reading from the book of Isaiah. The
0:02
Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, "Ask for a
0:05
sign from the Lord your God. Let it be
0:07
deep as the netherworld or high as the
0:09
sky." But Ahaz answered, "I will not
0:12
ask. I will not tempt the Lord." Then
0:15
Isaiah said, "Listen, O house of David.
0:18
Is it not enough for you to weary
0:20
people? Must you also weary my God?
0:22
Therefore, the Lord himself will give
0:24
you this sign. The virgin shall be with
0:26
child and bear a son and shall name him
0:29
Emmanuel which means God is with hers.
0:34
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
0:45
A reading from the letter to the
0:46
Hebrews. Brothers and sisters, it is
0:49
impossible that the blood of bulls and
0:51
goats take away sins. For this reason,
0:54
when Christ came into the world, he
0:56
said, "Sacrifice and offering you did
0:59
not desire, but a body you prepared for
1:01
me. In holocausts and sin offerings, you
1:04
took no delight." Then I said, "As is
1:07
written of me in the scroll, behold, I
1:09
come to do your will, oh God." First he
1:12
says, "Sacrifices and offerings,
1:15
holocausts and sin offerings, you
1:17
neither desired nor delighted in. These
1:20
are offered according to the law." Then
1:22
he says, "Behold, I come to do your
1:24
will." He takes away the first to
1:27
establish the second. By this will, we
1:30
have been consecrated through the
1:31
offering of the body of Jesus Christ
1:33
once for all. The word of the Lord.
1:45
A reading from the Holy Gospel according
1:47
to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The angel
1:50
Gabriel was sent from God to a town of
1:52
Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin
1:54
betrothed to a man named Joseph of the
1:57
house of David. And the virgin's name
1:59
was Mary. And coming to her, he said,
2:02
"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with
2:04
you." But she was greatly troubled at
2:06
what was said and pondered what sort of
2:08
greeting this might be. Then the angel
2:11
said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary,
2:13
for you have found favor with God.
2:15
Behold, you will conceive in your womb
2:17
and bear a son, and you shall name him
2:19
Jesus. He will be great and will be
2:22
called Son of the Most High, and the
2:24
Lord God will give him the throne of
2:25
David, his father, and he will rule over
2:28
the house of Jacob forever, and of his
2:30
kingdom there will be no end. But Mary
2:33
said to the angel, "How can this be
2:36
since I have no relations with a man?"
2:38
And the angel said to her in reply, "The
2:40
Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the
2:43
power of the Most High will overshadow
2:45
you. Therefore, the child to be born
2:47
will be called Holy, the Son of God. And
2:51
behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has
2:52
also conceived a son in her old age, and
2:55
this is the sixth month for her, who was
2:57
called Baron, for nothing will be
2:59
impossible for God." Mary said, "Behold,
3:03
I am the handmade of the Lord. May it be
3:06
done to me according to your word. Then
3:08
the angel departed from her. The Gospel
3:11
of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus
3:22
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
3:24
there are moments in human history when
3:26
heaven seems to touch earth. when the
3:29
divine bursts into daily life with a
3:31
force that forever alters the course of
3:33
human existence. Today, the Holy
3:36
Scriptures place us before one of these
3:38
moments perhaps the most extraordinary
3:40
of all, when a young girl from Nazareth
3:43
received a visit from an angel and
3:45
uttered a yes that would change the
3:47
destiny of all humanity.
3:49
But before we reach this sublime moment,
3:52
we need to understand the broader
3:53
context of God's redemptive plan. Our
3:56
first reading takes us back to the
3:58
kingdom of Judah. Centuries before the
4:00
birth of Christ, King Aaz is facing a
4:03
military crisis. Two powerful kingdoms
4:06
threaten to invade Jerusalem. And the
4:08
king's heart trembles like the trees of
4:10
the forest tremble in the wind. It is in
4:13
this moment of terror and uncertainty
4:16
that God through the prophet Isaiah
4:18
makes a surprising offer. Ask for a sign
4:21
from the Lord your God. What generosity
4:25
God is offering a has tangible proof of
4:27
his presence and protection. The king
4:29
can ask for anything, a sign from heaven
4:32
or from the depths of the earth. But a
4:35
has in a display of false piety that
4:36
barely conceals his unbelief refuses, "I
4:39
will not ask. I will not put the Lord to
4:42
the test." What a tragedy. He is so
4:45
trapped in his fear and distrust that he
4:47
rejects God's own offer. How often do we
4:50
do the same? God offers to help us to
4:53
show us the way. But we in our
4:54
stubbornness or false humility refuse
4:56
his grace. Isaiah responds with a
4:59
mixture of frustration and prophecy.
5:02
Hear now, oh house of David, is it not
5:04
enough for you to be a burden to men?
5:06
Will you also be a burden to my God? It
5:10
is as if the prophet was saying, you not
5:12
only exhaust human patience with your
5:14
unbelief, but also divine patience. And
5:17
then despite Ahaz's refusal, God gives
5:19
the sign anyway. But not just any sign.
5:23
He gives the sign, the ultimate sign
5:24
that would echo through the centuries.
5:27
Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear
5:29
a son and shall call his name Emmanuel.
5:32
Emmanuel, God with us. What a fitting
5:35
name for the one who would be God's
5:37
ultimate answer to the human condition.
5:39
This prophecy given at a time of
5:41
political crisis completely transcends
5:44
that immediate context. It points to
5:46
something much greater, much deeper. It
5:50
points to the moment when God would not
5:51
only send a sign or a messenger but
5:54
would come himself becoming one of us.
5:58
Moving on to the letter to the Hebrews,
6:00
we see the author reflecting on the
6:02
inadequacy of the old sacrificial
6:04
system. It is impossible for the blood
6:06
of bulls and goats to take away sins.
6:09
Year after year, the priests offered the
6:11
same sacrifices, but these sacrifices
6:14
could never truly solve the problem of
6:15
sin. They were like a band-aid applied
6:18
to a wound that needed surgery. Why?
6:21
Because the human problem is far deeper
6:23
than any external ritual could cure. Sin
6:26
is not merely a matter of wrong actions
6:28
that need to be compensated for. It is a
6:31
condition of the human heart that needs
6:33
total transformation. And this is where
6:36
we see the beauty of God's plan. The
6:39
author of Hebrews quotes the psalm
6:40
putting these words in the mouth of
6:42
Christ. sacrifice and offering you did
6:44
not desire, but a body you prepared for
6:47
me. Behold, I have come to do your will,
6:50
oh God. What an extraordinary contrast.
6:54
Instead of more external sacrifices, God
6:57
prepares a body, a human body, so that
6:59
his son can come and fully do the
7:01
father's will. This is the heart of the
7:04
mystery of the incarnation.
7:06
God did not solve the human problem from
7:08
afar, sending temporary solutions or
7:10
instructions to be followed. He entered
7:13
into the human condition, assuming our
7:15
nature to transform us from the inside
7:18
out. And this leads us to the
7:20
culminating moment of our readings, the
7:24
Luke takes us to a small village in
7:25
Galilee, a place so insignificant that
7:28
it isn't even mentioned in the Old
7:31
Nazareth, a place of which it would
7:33
later be said, "Can anything good come
7:37
There lives a young virgin betrothed to
7:40
a man named Joseph. Her name is Miriam,
7:43
Mary. She is living her ordinary life,
7:46
probably going about her daily household
7:48
chores without the slightest idea that
7:50
she is about to become the pivot of
7:52
human history. Suddenly, the angel
7:55
Gabriel appears. Hail full of grace, the
7:58
Lord is with you. What a disconcerting
8:01
greeting. Mary is troubled, have him,
8:03
and who wouldn't be. But notice the
8:06
nature of her trouble. It is not
8:07
panicked fear, but a deep reflection on
8:10
what this greeting might mean. Mary is
8:13
not portrayed as someone who passively
8:14
accepts everything she is told. She
8:17
reflects, questions, seeks to
8:18
understand. When Gabriel announces that
8:21
she will conceive and give birth to a
8:23
son, she doesn't simply say yes
8:25
immediately. She asks a perfectly
8:28
reasonable question. How can this be
8:30
since I am a virgin? This is not the
8:33
cynical question of Zechariah which
8:35
resulted in his temporary muteness. It
8:38
is the honest question of someone who
8:40
wants to understand how to cooperate
8:42
with God's plan. Mary knows the laws of
8:45
biology. She knows that babies come from
8:49
So, how can this happen? Gabriel's
8:52
answer is sublime. The Holy Spirit will
8:55
come upon you and the power of the Most
8:57
High will overshadow you. Here we see
9:00
the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy.
9:02
The virgin will conceive not by human
9:05
means but by direct divine intervention.
9:09
The impossible is about to become
9:10
reality. And then in this small house in
9:13
Nazareth at this seemingly insignificant
9:16
moment in history, a young woman utters
9:18
the words that would change everything.
9:21
Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.
9:23
Let it be done to me according to your
9:25
word. My dear brothers and sisters,
9:28
pause for a moment and contemplate the
9:29
magnitude of this. Yes. Mary had no
9:33
guarantees about what her life would be
9:34
like. She knew that being pregnant
9:37
before marriage could result in
9:38
rejection, shame, even stoning. She
9:41
didn't know how Joseph would react. She
9:44
didn't fully understand what it would
9:45
mean to be the mother of the Messiah.
9:48
But she trusted in the midst of
9:50
uncertainty, in the midst of mystery,
9:53
[music] she chose to cooperate with
9:55
God's plan. Her yes was an act of
9:58
profound faith, [music] extraordinary
10:00
courage, and absolute love. And in this
10:04
yes, we see the fulfillment of all that
10:06
God had promised. The sign given to Ahaz
10:08
centuries before now becomes reality.
10:11
The body prepared for the son mentioned
10:13
in Hebrews is being formed in Mary's
10:16
womb. Emmanuel, God with us, is about to
10:19
enter human history definitively.
10:22
But what is the relevance of this for us
10:24
today? Why does this ancient story still
10:27
matter? Because each of us is called to
10:29
have our own moment of enunciation. God
10:32
continues to visit us, to call us, to
10:34
invite us to participate in his
10:36
redemptive plan. Perhaps not through
10:38
visible angels, but through inner
10:40
inspirations, through providential
10:42
circumstances, through the gentle voice
10:44
of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. And
10:47
like Ahaz, we can refuse. We can hide
10:51
behind pious excuses. We can let fear or
10:54
unbelief paralyze us. Or like Mary, we
10:57
can say yes even when we don't fully
10:59
understand, even when the path ahead
11:02
seems uncertain. Mary's yes wasn't
11:05
uttered just once. It was a continuous
11:07
choice renewed each day of her life. At
11:11
the foot of the cross, watching her son
11:12
die, she was saying yes again. In the
11:15
upper room, waiting with the disciples
11:17
for the Holy Spirit, she was saying yes
11:20
once more. And us, what yes is God
11:23
asking of us today. Perhaps it's a yes
11:26
to forgive someone who has deeply hurt
11:28
us. Perhaps it's a yes to letting go of
11:30
a comfortable situation and following a
11:33
new calling. Perhaps it's a yes to
11:36
loving when it's difficult, to serving
11:38
when we would prefer to be served, to
11:40
trusting when everything seems
11:42
uncertain. The beautiful paradox of
11:44
Christianity is this. When we say yes to
11:47
God, when we become his servants, that's
11:50
when we discover our true freedom.
11:52
Mary didn't lose her identity when she
11:54
became the mother of Jesus. She found
11:57
it. She wasn't diminished by her
11:59
obedience. She was exalted. All
12:02
generations call her blessed not despite
12:04
her submission to God but because of it.
12:07
The same is true for us. When we say yes
12:10
to God's plans, when we allow him to
12:12
work in us and through us, we discover
12:14
who we truly are. We find our purpose,
12:18
our joy, our peace. And here is the
12:21
wonderful promise. Just as the Holy
12:23
Spirit came upon Mary and the power of
12:26
the most high overshadowed her, the same
12:28
spirit is available to us. We are not
12:31
left alone to fulfill God's calling in
12:33
our own strength. He empowers us. He
12:36
strengthens us. He works in us both the
12:38
will and the ability to do. Brothers and
12:41
sisters, we live in a time that often
12:43
seems as uncertain as the days of King
12:45
Aaz. The trees of the forest of our
12:48
lives tremble in the wind of personal
12:50
crises, economic uncertainties, social
12:53
divisions, and global challenges. But
12:56
the same God who spoke through Isaiah
12:58
who prepared a body for his son who sent
13:00
Gabriel to Mary is speaking to us today.
13:04
He is offering us signs of his presence.
13:07
He is inviting us to participate in his
13:09
ongoing plan of redemption. He is
13:11
calling us to say our own yes. May we
13:14
have the courage of Mary, the faith to
13:16
say, "Behold, I am the servant of the
13:18
Lord. Let it be done to me according to
13:22
May we trust that just as God was
13:24
faithful to Mary, he will be faithful to
13:26
us. May we open our hearts so that
13:28
Christ may be born again within us,
13:30
transforming us from the inside out. And
13:33
may Emanuel, God with us, not be merely
13:35
a doctrine we profess, but a reality we
13:38
live each day. May we experience the
13:40
living presence of God in our lives. And
13:42
may others see Jesus reflected in us.
13:45
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
13:47
the love of God the Father, and the
13:49
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with
13:51
you all now and forever. Amen.
13:56
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
13:58
battle. Be our protection against the
14:01
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
14:03
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
14:07
thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by
14:10
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
14:13
and all the evil spirits who prowl
14:16
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
