0:07
Reading from the book of Deuteronomy. In
0:10
those days Moses went up from the steps
0:12
of Moab to Mount Nebo to the top of
0:15
Pisgah which is opposite Jericho. The
0:18
Lord showed him the whole land from
0:19
Gilead to Dan, the territory of Nahali,
0:22
the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all
0:25
the land of Judah as far as the western
0:26
sea, the Needf, and the region of the
0:29
valley of Jericho, the city of palm
0:31
trees as far as Zagre. The Lord said to
0:34
him, "This is the land I swore to
0:36
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, I
0:39
will give it to your descendants. You
0:42
have seen it with your own eyes, yet you
0:44
shall not enter it." Moses, the servant
0:47
of the Lord, died there in the land of
0:50
Moab according to the will of the Lord.
0:53
He buried him in the valley in the land
0:55
of Moab opposite Beth Peggar, and no one
0:58
knows to this day where his tomb is.
1:01
When Moses died, he was 120 years old.
1:06
His sight had not failed, nor had his
1:08
vigor waned. The children of Israel
1:11
mourned for Moses in the plains of Moab
1:13
for 30 days until the mourning for Moses
1:16
ended. Joshua son of Nun was filled with
1:19
the spirit of wisdom because Moses had
1:21
laid his hands on him. And the children
1:23
of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord
1:26
had commanded Moses. There has never
1:28
again been a prophet in Israel like
1:30
Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.
1:33
Nor in the signs and wonders that the
1:34
Lord commanded him to perform in the
1:36
land of Egypt against Pharaoh, his
1:38
servants, and all his land. Nor in the
1:41
mighty hand and the many and terrible
1:43
wonders that Moses performed in the
1:44
sight of all Israel. The word of the
1:47
Lord. Thanks be to God.
1:58
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus
2:00
Christ according to St. Matthew. Glory
2:03
to you, O Lord. At that time Jesus said
2:06
to his disciples, "If your brother sins
2:09
against you, go and tell him his fault
2:11
between you and him alone. If he listens
2:13
to you, you have gained your brother. If
2:16
he does not listen, take one or two
2:18
others with you so that every matter may
2:21
be decided on the testimony of two or
2:23
three witnesses. If he refuses to listen
2:26
to you, tell it to the church. If he
2:29
refuses to listen even to the church,
2:31
let him be treated as if he were a pagan
2:33
or a public sinner. Truly, I say to you,
2:37
whatever you bind on earth will be bound
2:39
in heaven, and whatever you loose on
2:41
earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, I
2:43
say to you, if two of you agree on earth
2:46
about anything they ask, it will be done
2:48
for them by my father in heaven. For
2:51
where two or three are gathered together
2:52
in my name, there am I in the midst of
2:55
them. Word of salvation. Glory to you,
3:08
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
3:11
imagine yourself standing on a
3:12
mountaintop, gazing out over a vast
3:15
plane that stretches as far as the eye
3:17
can see. You can see distant cities,
3:20
rivers winding through the landscape,
3:22
verdant fields promising abundant
3:24
harvest. It's a magnificent sight full
3:27
of possibility and hope. But there's one
3:30
heartbreaking detail. You can see but
3:33
you can't enter. This is exactly the
3:36
situation we find Moses in today's first
3:38
reading. A moment of profound beauty and
3:41
melancholy that teaches us fundamental
3:42
lessons about leadership, obedience, and
3:45
the mystery of God's plans. Then Moses
3:48
went up from the plains of Moab to Mount
3:50
Nebo. The book of Deuteronomy tells us,
3:54
"What a moment laden with symbolism.
3:56
Moses, the great liberator, the man who
3:59
spoke facetof face with God, is about to
4:02
behold the promised land he led the
4:03
people for 40 years to reach, but in
4:05
which he himself will never set foot.
4:08
From the top of Pisgga, God shows Moses
4:10
the entire land. This is the land I
4:13
swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when
4:16
I said to them, I will give it to your
4:18
descendants. I will show it to you with
4:20
your eyes, but you shall not cross over.
4:24
What words must have deeply touched
4:26
Moses' heart? He can see the culmination
4:28
of decades of journeying, but he cannot
4:31
participate in it. But there is
4:33
something profoundly beautiful in Moses'
4:35
response. There is no record of
4:38
rebellion, bitterness, or questioning.
4:41
Instead, we read simply, "There Moses,
4:44
the servant of the Lord, died in the
4:46
land of Moab according to the word of
4:50
Moses accepts God's plan with a grace
4:52
that teaches us about true obedience and
4:54
trust. This scene makes us reflect on
4:57
our own lives. How often do we find
5:00
ourselves in situations where we can
5:01
clearly see where we want to be, but
5:04
circumstances beyond our control prevent
5:06
us from getting there? A professional
5:08
dream that always seems out of reach. A
5:11
relationship we long to restore but
5:13
remains broken. A health condition that
5:16
limits our activities. How do we respond
5:19
to these situations? With bitterness or
5:22
with the grace of Moses? The text
5:24
continues with a touching description.
5:27
Moses was 120 years old when he died.
5:30
His eyes were not dim, nor was his
5:32
strength lost. What a powerful image.
5:36
Moses maintained his clear vision and
5:38
strength to the end. He did not die from
5:41
weakness or illness, but because God's
5:43
appointed time had arrived. This reminds
5:46
us that our spiritual vision and vigor
5:49
of faith need not diminish with age or
5:51
circumstances. We can maintain a clear
5:53
perspective of God's purposes and a
5:55
renewed energy to serve him regardless
5:58
of the limitations we face. And then
6:00
comes one of the most powerful
6:02
statements about Moses. There has never
6:04
since arisen a prophet like Moses in
6:06
Israel with whom the Lord spoke face to
6:09
face. What extraordinary praise. Moses
6:13
is remembered not so much for the
6:15
miracles he performed or the victories
6:16
he achieved but for the intimacy of his
6:19
relationship with God. This intimacy
6:21
with God is what enabled Moses to lead
6:23
with authority to remain faithful amidst
6:26
difficulties and to accept with grace
6:28
even God's decisions that he did not
6:30
fully understand. It is this same
6:32
intimacy that we are called to develop
6:34
in our own lives. Turning to the gospel,
6:37
we find Jesus teaching about a crucial
6:39
aspect of community life. How to deal
6:42
with conflict and offenses. If your
6:45
brother sins against you, Jesus says, go
6:48
and tell him his fault between you and
6:50
him alone. What practical and profound
6:53
wisdom. Jesus is establishing a process,
6:57
a methodology for restoring broken
6:59
relationships. First, the personal and
7:02
private approach. How many conflicts
7:04
could be resolved if we followed this
7:06
first step? Instead of gossiping,
7:09
complaining, or avoiding the person,
7:12
Jesus calls us to an honest and direct
7:14
conversation. But Jesus knows that the
7:17
first step won't always be enough. If he
7:20
won't listen to you, Jesus continues,
7:22
"Take one or two others with you so that
7:25
every matter may be decided by the
7:26
testimony of two or three witnesses."
7:29
Here we see the wisdom of involving
7:31
others, not to humiliate or attack, but
7:34
to bring additional perspectives and
7:36
impartial witnesses. And if that still
7:39
doesn't work, if he refuses to listen,
7:42
tell it to the community.
7:44
This is a serious step involving the
7:47
entire community in the process of
7:49
restoration. It's not an invitation to
7:51
condemnation, but a lastditch effort to
7:54
bring healing and reconciliation.
7:56
Finally, if the person will refuse to
7:59
listen even to the community, let them
8:01
be to you as pagans and tax collectors.
8:04
This may seem like a final condemnation,
8:07
but let's remember how Jesus treated
8:09
pagans and tax collectors with love,
8:12
compassion, and hope for conversion.
8:14
Even this last step isn't about
8:16
permanent rejection, but about
8:18
establishing healthy boundaries while
8:20
keeping the door open for future
8:21
reconciliation. What connects these two
8:24
readings is the question of leadership
8:26
and spiritual authority. Moses exercised
8:29
leadership through his intimacy with
8:31
God. Jesus establishes principles for
8:34
community leadership based on love,
8:36
truth, and restoration. Jesus continues,
8:40
"Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on
8:43
earth will be bound in heaven, and
8:45
whatever you loose on earth will be
8:48
This is a powerful promise about the
8:50
spiritual authority given to the
8:52
community of faith. When we act in union
8:54
with God's will, our acts of
8:56
forgiveness, restoration, and even
8:59
discipline have eternal significance.
9:01
And then Jesus makes a promise that
9:03
should fill our hearts with hope. Where
9:05
two or three are gathered together in my
9:07
name, there am I in the midst of them.
9:10
What wonderful assurance. We are not
9:13
alone in our efforts to build community,
9:15
resolve conflict, or seek God's will.
9:18
Jesus is present, guiding, empowering,
9:22
and blessing. My dear brothers and
9:24
sisters, what do these readings teach us
9:27
about living in community and following
9:29
God's will? First, like Moses, we are
9:32
called to develop a deep intimacy with
9:34
God. It is this intimacy that will give
9:37
us the wisdom to lead when necessary,
9:39
the strength to persevere through
9:40
difficulties, and the grace to accept
9:43
even that which we do not fully
9:44
understand. Second, when conflicts
9:47
arise, and they will, we have a clear
9:50
path to follow. Not the path of
9:52
avoidance, gossip, or retaliation, but
9:55
the path of honest dialogue, the pursuit
9:58
of truth, and restoration. Third, we
10:01
recognize that being part of a community
10:03
of faith means having both privileges
10:05
and responsibilities. We have the
10:08
authority to speak in Christ's name, but
10:10
also the responsibility to do so with
10:12
love, wisdom, and humility. Fourth, we
10:16
are never alone in our efforts. Just as
10:19
God was with Moses on the mountain,
10:21
Jesus is with us when we gather in his
10:23
name, seeking his will and working for
10:26
reconciliation. Finally, we learned that
10:29
we will not always see the complete
10:30
fulfillment of our dreams and hopes in
10:33
this life. Moses saw the promised land
10:36
but did not enter it. We can work for
10:38
changes that we will only fully see in
10:41
the kingdom of God. But this does not
10:43
diminish the value of our work or the
10:45
importance of our faithfulness. Like
10:47
Moses who maintained his clear vision
10:50
and vigor until the end. May we maintain
10:52
our spiritual perspective and energy to
10:54
serve God regardless of the
10:56
circumstances. Like the disciples, may
10:59
we learn to handle conflict in a way
11:01
that honors God and promotes healing.
11:04
And may we in every situation remember
11:06
Jesus promise. Where two or three are
11:09
gathered in his name, he is in their
11:11
midst. This presence of Christ is our
11:14
source of strength, wisdom, and hope.
11:17
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
11:20
the love of God the Father, and the
11:22
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with
11:24
you all today and always. Amen.
11:36
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
11:39
battle. be our protection against the
11:41
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
11:44
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
11:47
thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by
11:50
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
11:54
and all the evil spirits who prowl
11:56
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
