0:07
Reading from the book of Judges. In
0:09
those days, the angel of the Lord came
0:12
and sat under an oak in Ephraim, which
0:14
belonged to Jo of the Abzer clan. His
0:17
son Gideon was threshing wheat on the
0:19
threshing floor to hide it from the
0:21
Midionites. An angel of the Lord
0:23
appeared to him and said, "The Lord is
0:25
with you, mighty warrior."
0:28
Gideon replied, "If the Lord is with us,
0:31
please tell me, Lord, why has all this
0:33
happened to us? Where are your wonders
0:36
which our ancestors told us about,
0:38
saying, The Lord brought us up out of
0:40
Egypt?" But now the Lord has abandoned
0:43
us and given us into the hands of the
0:47
Then the Lord turned to him and said,
0:49
"Go and with your strength rescue Israel
0:52
from the hands of the Midionites. I am
0:54
sending you." Gideon replied, "Tell me,
0:58
my Lord, how can I save Israel? My
1:01
family is the least important in
1:02
Manasseh, and I am the least of my
1:05
father's household." The Lord answered
1:07
him, "I will be with you, and you will
1:10
defeat the Midionites as if they were
1:12
one man." Then Gideon continued, "If I
1:15
have found favor in your eyes, give me a
1:18
sign that it is you who speak with me.
1:20
Do not leave here until I return with an
1:23
offering to present to you." The Lord
1:25
replied, "I will stay here until you
1:28
return." So Gideon went away, prepared a
1:31
young goat, and made unleavened bread
1:33
with a measure of flour. He put the meat
1:36
in a basket and the broth in a jar. He
1:39
took it under the oak, and presented it
1:41
to him. The angel of the Lord said to
1:43
him, "Take the meat and the unleavened
1:46
bread, place them on the stone, and pour
1:48
the broth over them." And Gideon did so.
1:52
The angel of the Lord reached out the
1:54
tip of the staff in his hand and touched
1:56
the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire
1:58
came out of the rock and consumed the
2:00
meat and the bread. The angel of the
2:02
Lord disappeared from his sight. When
2:05
Gideon realized it was the angel of the
2:07
Lord, he exclaimed, "Woe to me,
2:10
sovereign Lord. I have seen the angel of
2:13
the Lord face to face." But the Lord
2:15
said to him, "Peace be with you. Do not
2:18
be afraid. You will not die. Then Gideon
2:22
built an altar there to the Lord and
2:24
called it, "The Lord is peace." The word
2:27
of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
2:39
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus
2:41
Christ according to St. Matthew. Glory
2:44
to you, Lord. At that time Jesus said to
2:47
his disciples, "Truly I tell you, it
2:50
will be hard for someone who is rich to
2:52
enter the kingdom of heaven." And again,
2:55
it is easier for a camel to go through
2:57
the eye of a needle than for someone who
2:59
is rich to enter the kingdom of God.
3:01
When the disciples heard this, they were
3:03
astonished and asked, "Then who can be
3:06
saved?" Jesus looked at them and said,
3:09
"With human beings, this is impossible,
3:11
but with God all things are possible."
3:14
Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, "See,
3:18
we have left everything and followed
3:20
you. What shall we receive?" Jesus
3:23
answered, "Truly, I tell you, when the
3:25
world is renewed and the Son of Man sits
3:27
on the throne of his glory, you who have
3:30
followed me will also sit on 12 thrones,
3:32
judging the 12 tribes of Israel. And
3:35
everyone who has left houses or brothers
3:37
or sisters or father or mother or
3:38
children or fields for my name's sake
3:41
will receive a hundfold and will inherit
3:44
eternal life. Many who are first will be
3:46
last and many who are last will be
3:50
Word of salvation. Glory to you Lord.
4:02
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
4:05
imagine yourself standing before a magic
4:08
mirror. Not an ordinary mirror that only
4:10
reflects our physical appearance, but a
4:12
mirror that reveals who we truly are in
4:14
the deepest depths of our being, our
4:16
insecurities, our fears, but also our
4:19
untapped potential. Today's readings
4:22
invite us to look through this divine
4:23
mirror where God sees us not only as we
4:26
are, but as we can become. In the first
4:29
reading, we find Gideon in a moment of
4:32
profound national and personal crisis.
4:34
Israel has been oppressed by the
4:36
Midianites for seven years. The people
4:39
live in hiding, in fear, reduced to
4:42
poverty and despair. And it is in this
4:44
context that we find Gideon not on a
4:47
battlefield as a courageous warrior, but
4:49
hidden, threshing wheat in the wine
4:51
press, away from the eyes of his
4:54
enemies. What a powerful image. The wine
4:57
press was the place where grapes were
4:59
trotten to make wine, a low, hidden
5:02
place. Gideon is literally at the bottom
5:05
of the pit, doing what he can to
5:07
survive. And it is precisely in this
5:09
moment of apparent weakness and
5:11
insignificance that the angel of the
5:12
Lord appears and greets him with words
5:14
that must have sounded almost sarcastic.
5:16
The Lord is with you, mighty warrior. I
5:20
can imagine the look of disbelief on
5:22
Gideon's face. a valiant warrior. Me? Do
5:26
you see where I am? I'm hiding,
5:29
threshing wheat in the wine press
5:31
because I'm afraid of the Midianites.
5:34
But God sees in Gideon not the coward he
5:36
thinks he is, but the liberator he can
5:39
become. Gideon's response reveals his
5:41
inner struggle. Ah, my Lord, if the Lord
5:44
is with us, why has all this happened to
5:47
us? How often do we ask this same
5:50
question when we face hardship? When we
5:53
feel abandoned, when life seems unfair,
5:56
we question God's presence and care. But
5:58
look at God's response. He doesn't offer
6:01
a complex theological explanation for
6:04
suffering. Instead, he does something
6:07
even more extraordinary. He calls Gideon
6:10
to be part of the solution. Go with this
6:12
strength you have and save Israel from
6:14
the oppression of Midian. Have I not
6:17
sent you? This strength you have? What
6:20
interesting words, Gideon doesn't feel
6:23
strong. He feels weak, insignificant, of
6:27
the least family of Manasseh. But God
6:30
sees a strength in Gideon that Gideon
6:32
himself doesn't recognize. It's the
6:34
strength of faith, even if small. It's
6:38
the strength of someone who, despite
6:40
their doubts, is willing to hear and
6:42
respond to God's call. Now, let's turn
6:45
our attention to the gospel where we
6:47
find another scene of unbelief. but this
6:50
time on the part of the disciples. Jesus
6:52
has just had his encounter with a rich
6:54
young man who walked away sad because he
6:57
couldn't give up his many possessions.
6:59
And then Jesus makes that shocking
7:01
statement. Truly I tell you, it's hard
7:04
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of
7:05
heaven. The disciples are astonished.
7:09
The Greek word suggests they were
7:11
utterly astonished, perplexed, and they
7:14
asked the question that echoes through
7:15
the centuries. Then who can be saved? To
7:19
understand the disciples reaction, we
7:22
need to understand the mindset of the
7:24
time. In Jewish culture, wealth was
7:27
often seen as a sign of God's blessing.
7:29
If the rich who seem to have divine
7:32
favor couldn't be saved, then who could?
7:35
Jesus answer is at once disconcerting
7:37
and liberating. With men, this is
7:39
impossible. But with God, all things are
7:42
possible. Jesus is telling us that
7:44
salvation is not something we earn or
7:46
deserve through our efforts,
7:48
possessions, or status. It is a gift
7:51
from God, a work of his grace. Peter,
7:55
ever impetuous, raises a question we've
7:57
all wondered. Behold, we have left
8:00
everything and followed you. What reward
8:03
will we have? It's a human and
8:05
understandable question. Peter is
8:08
essentially saying, Jesus, we did what
8:10
that rich young man couldn't do. We left
8:13
our possessions, our careers, our
8:15
securities. Does that count for
8:18
anything? Jesus answer is magnificent.
8:21
Truly I tell you, you who have followed
8:23
me in the regeneration when the Son of
8:25
Man sits on the throne of his glory, you
8:28
also will sit on 12 thrones judging the
8:31
12 tribes of Israel. But Jesus doesn't
8:34
stop there. He expands on his promise.
8:37
And everyone who has left houses or
8:39
brothers or sisters or father or mother
8:41
or children or fields for my name's sake
8:43
will receive a hundfold and will inherit
8:45
eternal life. Herein lies the paradox of
8:48
the kingdom of God. Many who are first
8:50
will be last and many who are last will
8:53
be first. The world measures value by
8:56
possessions, position and power. But in
9:00
the kingdom of God, values are reversed.
9:03
What appears to be loss becomes gain.
9:06
What the world considers weakness, God
9:09
sees as strength. Returning to Gideon,
9:12
we see this same reversal of values.
9:15
Gideon sees himself as the least of the
9:17
smallest family. But it is precisely
9:20
this humility, this awareness of his own
9:22
fragility that makes him suitable for
9:25
God's use. Gideon cannot boast in his
9:28
own strength because he knows he has
9:30
none. All glory must go to God.
9:33
Likewise, when we strip ourselves of our
9:36
dependence on material possessions,
9:38
social status, or personal achievements,
9:41
we create space for God to work in our
9:43
lives in extraordinary ways. It's not
9:45
that poverty is automatically virtuous
9:47
or that we should disregard the material
9:49
blessings God gives us. The question is
9:52
where we place our trust and identity.
9:55
My dear brothers and sisters, these
9:57
readings confront us with fundamental
9:59
questions. In what or in whom do we
10:02
place our trust? How do we respond when
10:04
God calls us even when we feel
10:07
inadequate? Are we willing to let God
10:09
redefine our understanding of success
10:12
and worth? Gideon teaches us that God
10:14
doesn't look for perfect people, but for
10:17
available people. He calls us not
10:19
because we are strong, but because he is
10:22
strong. He sees us not just as we are,
10:25
but as we can become through his
10:26
transformative power. The rich young
10:29
ruler reminds us that our possessions
10:31
can become possessions if we allow them
10:33
to define our identity and security. But
10:35
the disciples show us that when we are
10:37
willing to leave everything to follow
10:39
Jesus, we discover that we have lost
10:41
nothing of true value. In fact, we have
10:44
gained far more than we could ever
10:46
imagine. Imagine for a moment what it
10:48
would be like if we truly lived by
10:50
believing that with God all things are
10:52
possible. How would that change our
10:55
approach to the challenges we face? How
10:58
would it transform our willingness to
11:00
serve even when we feel inadequate?
11:03
Think of Gideon, hidden in the wine
11:05
press, and how he became one of Israel's
11:08
great liberators. Think of the
11:10
disciples, simple fishermen and tax
11:12
collectors, and how they changed the
11:14
world. What untapped potential lies
11:17
within each of us, waiting to be
11:19
awakened by God's touch. Perhaps God is
11:22
looking at you today and seeing not your
11:24
limitations, but your potential. Perhaps
11:27
he is calling you a valiant warrior even
11:30
when you feel weak and insignificant.
11:33
Perhaps he is inviting you to leave
11:34
behind what you think you need to feel
11:36
safe so that you can discover the true
11:38
security that comes only from him. The
11:41
question remains, how will you respond?
11:44
Like Gideon, who despite his doubts was
11:47
willing to build an altar and offer
11:49
sacrifice or like the rich young man who
11:52
walked away sadly because the price
11:54
seemed too high. Remember, God isn't
11:58
looking for perfect people. He's looking
12:00
for people who are available. People
12:03
willing to trust him even when they
12:05
don't fully understand. People willing
12:07
to take steps of faith even when they
12:09
feel inadequate. May we respond to God's
12:12
call with courage, knowing that he sees
12:14
us not only as we are, but as we can
12:17
become. May we find our identity and
12:20
security not in our possessions or
12:21
achievements but in the unconditional
12:24
love of our heavenly father. And may we
12:27
like Gideon discover that our weakness
12:29
becomes strength when surrendered to
12:31
God's power. That our inadequacy becomes
12:34
adequacy when we allow him to work
12:36
through us. And that our smallalness
12:38
becomes greatness when placed in service
12:40
to God's kingdom. May the grace of our
12:43
Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the
12:45
Father, and the fellowship of the Holy
12:47
Spirit be with you all today and always.
13:00
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
13:03
battle. Be our protection against the
13:05
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
13:08
God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do
13:11
thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by
13:14
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
13:18
and all the evil spirits who prowl
13:20
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
