0:07
Reading from the book of Deuteronomy.
0:09
Moses spoke to the people, saying,
0:12
"Listen to the voice of the Lord your
0:13
God and observe all his commandments and
0:15
his statutes which are written in this
0:18
law. Return to the Lord your God with
0:20
all your heart and with all your soul.
0:23
Indeed, this commandment that I am
0:25
giving you today is not too difficult.
0:27
Nor is it beyond your reach. It is not
0:30
in heaven so that you can say, "Who will
0:33
go up to heaven for us to get it?" "Who
0:35
will teach us so that we can do it?" Nor
0:38
is it on the other side of the sea so
0:40
that you can say, "Who will cross the
0:42
sea for us to get it? Who will teach us
0:44
so that we can do it?" Rather, this word
0:47
is within your reach. It is in your
0:50
mouth and in your heart so that you can
0:52
do it. The word of the Lord. Thanks be
1:04
Reading from the letter of St. Paul to
1:06
the Colossians. Christ is the image of
1:09
the invisible God, the firstborn of all
1:12
creation. For through him all things
1:14
were created in heaven and on earth,
1:17
visible and invisible. whether thrones
1:19
or dominions or powers or rulers or
1:21
authorities. All things were created
1:24
through him and for him. He exists
1:26
before all things and in him all things
1:29
hold together. He is the head of the
1:31
body that is of the church. He is the
1:34
beginning, the firstborn from the dead.
1:37
Therefore, in everything he is
1:38
preeminent, because God chose to dwell
1:41
in him in all his fullness, and through
1:42
him to reconcile to himself all things,
1:45
whether on earth or in heaven, by making
1:47
peace through the blood of his cross.
1:50
Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
2:01
Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus
2:03
Christ according to St. Luke. Glory to
2:06
you, Lord. At that time, a scribe stood
2:09
up and wanting to test Jesus, asked,
2:12
"Teacher, what must I do to inherit
2:14
eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "What
2:18
is written in the law? How do you read
2:20
it?" He then answered, "You shall love
2:23
the Lord your God with all your heart,
2:25
and with all your soul, and with all
2:26
your strength, and with all your mind,
2:28
and your neighbor as yourself."
2:31
Jesus said to him, "You have answered
2:33
correctly. Do this and you will live.
2:37
But he wanting to justify himself said
2:40
to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
2:43
Jesus answered, "A certain man was going
2:46
down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he
2:48
fell among robbers. They stripped him of
2:51
everything, beat him, and went away,
2:54
leaving him half dead. By chance, a
2:57
priest was going down that road. when he
2:59
saw him, he passed by on the other side.
3:02
And so it was with a Levite. When he
3:05
came to the place, saw him and passed by
3:08
on the other side. But a Samaritan, as
3:11
he was traveling, came where he was. And
3:14
when he saw him, he had compassion. He
3:17
went to him and bandaged his wounds,
3:19
pouring oil and wine on them. Then he
3:21
put the man on his own animal and
3:23
brought him to an inn where he took care
3:25
of him. The next day, he took two silver
3:28
coins and gave them to the inkeeper,
3:30
saying, "Take care of him. When I
3:33
return, I will pay you back whatever
3:35
extra you spent." And Jesus asked,
3:38
"Which of these three do you think was a
3:41
neighbor to the man who fell among the
3:43
robbers?" He answered, "The one who
3:46
showed him mercy." Then Jesus said to
3:49
him, "Go and do likewise." Word of
3:52
salvation. Glory to you, Lord.
4:04
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
4:07
imagine yourself lost in an unfamiliar
4:09
city with no map, no GPS, and a dead
4:13
cell phone battery. You stop to ask for
4:16
directions, and someone responds, "Oh,
4:19
it's very simple. You take the third
4:21
street on the right, then the second on
4:23
the left. Go up the hill until you find
4:25
the blue fountain. Go down the marble
4:29
The more details someone gives, the more
4:32
confused you become. Sometimes the most
4:35
important things in life seem like this.
4:38
Complicated, distant, impossible to
4:40
reach. But today, through God's word, we
4:44
are invited to a surprising discovery.
4:47
The life God desires for us is not
4:49
hidden in some distant inaccessible
4:51
place. It is closer than we imagine.
4:55
Moses in this solemn moment of farewell
4:57
to the people of Israel before entering
4:59
the promised land makes a revolutionary
5:02
declaration. This word is not too hard
5:04
for you nor is it far from you. It is
5:07
not in heaven nor is it beyond the sea.
5:11
The word is very near you in your mouth
5:13
and in your heart so that you may do it.
5:16
What a relief it must have been for the
5:18
people to hear these words. After
5:20
decades of wandering in the desert,
5:22
after witnessing extraordinary miracles
5:25
after receiving the law on Mount Si amid
5:27
thunder and lightning, they might have
5:29
thought that following God was something
5:31
complex and distant. But Moses assures
5:34
them. It is not so. The life God desires
5:37
for us is not hidden in some
5:39
inaccessible place. We do not need to
5:42
climb impossible mountains or cross
5:44
oceans to find it. It is here now in our
5:47
hearts and in our mouths. It is in our
5:50
capacity to love, to serve, to make
5:53
choices that reflect God's character.
5:56
But perhaps we still wonder, who is this
5:58
God who desires to be so close to us?
6:01
What kind of life does he want us to
6:03
live? The second reading gives us a
6:06
magnificent answer. Paul writing to the
6:09
Colossians paints a stunning portrait of
6:12
Jesus Christ that takes our breath away.
6:15
He is the image of the invisible God,
6:18
the firstborn over all creation.
6:21
Imagine that Jesus is the perfect
6:24
photograph of God, the exact reflection
6:26
of his character. When we want to know
6:29
what God is like, we look to Jesus. When
6:32
we want to know what God thinks of us,
6:34
we look at how Jesus treated people.
6:36
When we want to understand the heart of
6:38
God, we contemplate the heart of Christ.
6:41
Paul continues, "In him all things were
6:44
created. All things were created.
6:47
Through him and for him." What an
6:49
extraordinary perspective. Jesus is not
6:52
just a great teacher or an inspiring
6:55
religious leader. He is the agent of
6:57
creation. The one through whom and for
6:59
whom all things exist. Every flower that
7:02
blooms, every star that shines, every
7:05
heart that beats exists because of him
7:08
and for him. He is before all things and
7:11
in him all things hold together.
7:14
Jesus is the center that holds the
7:16
universe together. Without him
7:18
everything would fall apart. He is the
7:21
cosmic glue that gives coherence and
7:23
meaning to all existence. And this same
7:26
Jesus who sustains galaxies and governs
7:29
the cosmos and desires to dwell in our
7:31
hearts. But Paul doesn't stop there. He
7:35
tells us that Jesus is also the head of
7:38
the body, the church. What a powerful
7:41
image. We the church are the body of
7:44
Christ in the world. Our hands are his
7:47
hands to bless. Our feet are his feet to
7:50
carry the gospel. Our voices are his
7:53
voice to proclaim love and hope. And
7:55
then like the grand finale of a
7:57
magnificent symphony, Paul declares, "It
8:00
pleased God to make all his fullness
8:02
dwell in him and through him to
8:03
reconcile all things to himself." Jesus
8:07
is the meeting point between heaven and
8:08
earth, the mediator who makes our
8:11
reconciliation with God possible. But
8:13
how does this manifest itself in
8:15
practice? How do we live this
8:18
magnificent reality in our daily lives?
8:21
The Gospel gives us the answer through
8:22
one of Jesus' most well-known and
8:24
powerful parables, that of the good
8:27
Samaritan. A lawyer trying to justify
8:29
himself asks Jesus, "Who is my
8:32
neighbor?" It's a seemingly simple
8:35
question, but it reveals a mindset that
8:37
seeks limits, that seeks to define the
8:40
extent of our responsibility to love.
8:42
Jesus answers, not with a theological
8:45
definition, but with a story that
8:47
revolutionizes our understanding of
8:49
love. A man goes down from Jerusalem to
8:52
Jericho, a notoriously dangerous road
8:55
known as the road of blood because of
8:58
its frequent robberies. Predictably, he
9:01
falls into the hands of bandits who beat
9:03
him and leave him half dead. Then Jesus
9:05
introduces three characters passing by.
9:09
First, a priest. He sees the wounded man
9:12
and passes by. Then a Levite. He does
9:16
the same. Both were religious leaders.
9:20
people who knew the law, who served in
9:22
the temple. But when faced with concrete
9:24
human need, they choose the other side
9:27
of the road. Why did they pass by?
9:30
Perhaps they were afraid. Perhaps they
9:32
thought helping would contaminate their
9:34
ritual purity. Perhaps they were in a
9:37
hurry to get to their sacred
9:39
commitments. How often do we do this
9:42
too? We pass by the need of others
9:44
because we are occupied with our own
9:46
agenda. Even if it is a religious
9:48
agenda. But then comes the third
9:51
character, a Samaritan. For the Jews of
9:54
the time, Samaritans were considered
9:56
heretics, despised half-brothers. This
10:00
man who theoretically should have been
10:02
the enemy of the wounded Jew is the only
10:04
one who stops, feels compassion, and
10:07
acts. Moved with compassion, he went to
10:10
him. What powerful words. Compassion
10:14
literally means to suffer with. The
10:17
Samaritan didn't just feel pity. He
10:20
identified with the man's suffering. He
10:22
made himself close to the others pain.
10:25
And then he acts. He tends the wounds,
10:28
puts the man on his own animal, takes
10:30
him to an inn, pays the expenses, and
10:33
promises to return. Each action is an
10:36
act of sacrificial love. He doesn't just
10:39
give of what he has. He gives of
10:41
himself. Jesus ends the parable by
10:44
turning the original question upside
10:46
down. The lawyer had asked, "Who is my
10:49
neighbor?" Jesus asks, "Which of these
10:52
three has made himself near the man who
10:55
has fallen into the hands of bandits?"
10:57
The question is not to identify who
10:59
deserves our help, but how we can become
11:02
close to those in need. My dear brothers
11:05
and sisters, these three readings
11:07
masterfully intertwine to teach us a
11:09
fundamental truth. The Christian life is
11:11
neither complicated nor distant. It is
11:14
very close to us in our hearts and in
11:16
our mouths. It manifests itself when we
11:19
allow Christ, the center of all
11:21
creation, to transform the way we see
11:24
and treat others. Being Christian is not
11:27
about mastering complex theological
11:29
theories or performing elaborate
11:31
rituals. It is about allowing the love
11:33
of Christ to flow through us to a
11:35
hurting world. It is about seeing every
11:38
person we encounter as our neighbor
11:40
regardless of their religion, skin
11:42
color, social status, or any other
11:45
difference. How often, like the priest
11:47
and the Levite, do we pass by in the
11:50
face of need? How often are we so busy
11:52
with our own lives, our own problems,
11:55
our own commitments that we fail to
11:57
notice the suffering around us? Perhaps
11:59
it is the lonely neighbor who needs
12:01
companionship. Maybe it's the coworker
12:04
who's struggling financially. Maybe it's
12:07
the rebellious teenager who behind their
12:09
defiant attitude is crying out for love
12:12
and understanding. Maybe it's the
12:14
elderly person everyone ignores because
12:17
they have nothing more to contribute.
12:20
God's word challenges us today. Don't
12:22
complicate things. The life God desires
12:25
for you is very close. It lies in your
12:28
ability to love, to serve, to draw near.
12:32
It lies in recognizing that Christ, who
12:35
sustains the universe, chose to make his
12:37
dwelling in you so that you can be
12:39
instruments of his love in the world.
12:41
Imagine if each of us left here today
12:43
determined to be a good Samaritan. If we
12:46
looked at our family, our work, our
12:48
community with eyes of compassion. If we
12:51
were willing to stop, to reach out, to
12:54
care, to invest ourselves in the lives
12:56
of others, how the world would be
12:59
transformed, how our communities would
13:02
be renewed, how our own lives would be
13:04
enriched. Because here is the secret the
13:07
Samaritan discovered. When we become
13:09
neighbors to others, when we love
13:11
sacrificially, it is not we who lose. We
13:15
find the abundant life that Jesus came
13:17
to give us. May we leave here today not
13:20
asking who is my neighbor but how can I
13:24
become neighbor? May we live the
13:26
powerful simplicity of the gospel to
13:28
love as we have been loved to serve as
13:31
we have been served to forgive as we
13:33
have been forgiven and may the grace of
13:35
our Lord Jesus Christ who reconciled all
13:38
things to himself empower us to be
13:40
agents of reconciliation and love in our
13:43
world. May his peace which surpasses all
13:46
understanding guard our hearts and minds
13:48
as we walk the road of life. Always
13:50
ready to stop and help when we encounter
13:52
someone who has fallen along the way.
14:04
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
14:07
battle. Be our protection against the
14:09
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
14:12
God rebuke him. we humbly pray. And do
14:15
thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by
14:18
the power of God, cast into hell Satan
14:22
and all the evil spirits who prowl
14:24
throughout the world seeking the ruin of
