A reading from the book of Ezekiel. Thus
0:02
says the Lord God, I will take the
0:04
children of Israel from among the
0:06
nations to which they have come and
0:08
gather them from all sides to bring them
0:10
back to their land. I will make them one
0:12
nation upon the land in the mountains of
0:15
Israel, and there shall be one prince
0:16
for them all. Never again shall they be
0:19
two nations, and never again shall they
0:21
be divided into two kingdoms.
0:23
No longer shall they defile themselves
0:25
with their idols, their abominations,
0:27
and all their transgressions. I will
0:30
deliver them from all their sins of
0:31
apostasy, and cleanse them so that they
0:34
may be my people, and I may be their
0:36
God. My servant David shall be prince
0:38
over them, and there shall be one
0:40
shepherd for them all. They shall live
0:42
by my statutes and carefully observe my
0:44
decrees. They shall live on the land
0:46
that I gave to my servant Jacob, the
0:49
land where their fathers lived. They
0:51
shall live on it forever. they and their
0:53
children and their children's children
0:55
with my servant David their prince
0:57
forever. I will make with them a
1:00
covenant of peace. It shall be an
1:02
everlasting covenant with them and I
1:04
will multiply them and put my sanctuary
1:06
among them forever. My dwelling shall be
1:09
with them. I will be their God and they
1:11
shall be my people. Thus the nations
1:14
shall know that it is I the Lord who
1:16
make Israel holy when my sanctuary shall
1:18
be set up among them forever. The word
1:21
of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
1:31
A reading from the Holy Gospel according
1:33
to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Many of
1:37
the Jews who had come to Mary and seen
1:38
what Jesus had done began to believe in
1:40
him. But some of them went to the
1:42
Pharisees and told them what Jesus had
1:44
done. So the chief priests and the
1:46
Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and
1:48
said, "What are we going to do? This man
1:50
is performing many signs. If we leave
1:53
him alone, all will believe in him, and
1:55
the Romans will come and take away both
1:57
our land and our nation. But one of
1:59
them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that
2:02
year, said to them, "You know nothing,
2:05
nor do you consider that it is better
2:06
for you that one man should die instead
2:08
of the people, so that the whole nation
2:10
may not perish." He did not say this on
2:13
his own, but since he was high priest
2:15
for that year, he prophesied that Jesus
2:18
was going to die for the nation. And not
2:21
only for the nation, but also to gather
2:23
into one the dispersed children of God.
2:26
So from that day on, they planned to
2:27
kill him. So Jesus no longer walked
2:30
about in public among the Jews, but he
2:32
left for the region near the desert to a
2:34
town called Ephraim, and there he
2:36
remained with his disciples. Now the
2:39
Passover of the Jews was near, and many
2:42
went up from the country to Jerusalem
2:44
before Passover to purify themselves.
2:47
They looked for Jesus and said to one
2:48
another as they were in the temple area,
2:50
"What do you think that he will not come
2:53
to the feast?" The Gospel of the Lord.
2:56
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
3:06
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
3:09
there are moments in human history when
3:10
all seems lost. When the structures we
3:13
knew crumble, when dreams shatter like
3:15
glass against the floor, when the very
3:18
identity of a people seems to be erased
3:20
by the inexurable force of time and
3:23
It was precisely in this kind of moment,
3:26
in the abyss of despair, that God spoke
3:28
through the prophet Ezekiel, bringing a
3:31
message of hope so radiant that it still
3:34
illuminates our paths today. The people
3:36
of Israel were scattered, fragmented,
3:40
Judah in the south, Israel in the north,
3:43
separated not only geographically, but
3:46
in their practices, in their politics,
3:48
in their very understanding of who they
3:50
were as God's people, and were still
3:53
they were exiled, torn from their land,
3:56
from their temple, from the very roots
3:58
of their identity. If you have ever felt
4:00
the pain of separation, of
4:02
fragmentation, of loss of identity, then
4:05
you understand, even if only partially,
4:08
the suffering of that people. And it is
4:11
in this context of devastation that God
4:13
through Ezekiel makes a promise that
4:15
defies all human logic. I will make them
4:18
one nation in the land on the mountains
4:20
of Israel. They will all have one king,
4:22
and they will never again be two
4:24
nations. Never again will they be
4:26
divided into two kingdoms. Pause for a
4:29
moment to appreciate the audacity of
4:30
this promise. We are talking about
4:32
centuries of division, rivalry, and
4:35
conflict. We are talking about deep
4:37
wounds, historical betrayals and
4:39
ingrained hatreds. And God says, "I will
4:42
unite them not through military force,
4:45
not through political manipulation, but
4:47
through a fundamental transformation of
4:50
their hearts. They will be my people,
4:52
and I will be their God."
4:55
This simple phrase contains the secret
4:57
of all true unity. It is not by finding
5:00
what we have in common that we truly
5:02
unite, but by recognizing that we all
5:05
belong to the same God, that we are all
5:07
loved by the same father, that we are
5:10
all called to the same divine purpose.
5:12
But the promise goes even deeper. God is
5:16
not merely promising to gather his
5:18
people. He is promising to purify them.
5:21
I will cleanse them from all their
5:22
impurities and from all their idols. The
5:26
idols here are not just statues of stone
5:28
or wood. They are all the things we put
5:30
in the place of God. Our unbridled
5:33
ambition, our attachment to material
5:35
possessions, our relentless pursuit of
5:37
validation and recognition. And then
5:40
comes the most beautiful part of the
5:42
promise. I will make a covenant of peace
5:44
with them. An everlasting covenant.
5:46
Peace. Shalom. Not just the absence of
5:50
conflict but the fullness of well-being,
5:55
And this peace would not be temporary,
5:57
subject to the whims of politics or
5:59
changes in leadership. It would be
6:01
eternal, grounded in God's own
6:06
I will establish my dwelling place among
6:08
them. What an extraordinary promise. The
6:12
God of the universe, the creator of
6:14
heaven and earth, promising to dwell
6:16
among his people. This is humanity's
6:19
ultimate aspiration since the fall in
6:20
Eden to be once again in God's presence
6:24
to walk with him [music] to live in
6:25
intimate communion with the creator.
6:28
Now let's turn to the Gospel of John and
6:31
see how this ancient promise begins to
6:33
be fulfilled in a way no one could have
6:35
foreseen. Caiaphas, the high priest, is
6:38
presiding over an urgent meeting of the
6:40
Sanhedrin. Jesus has just resurrected
6:42
Lazarus and the religious authorities
6:44
are in a panic. If we let him go on like
6:47
this, they say, everyone will believe in
6:50
him. And the Romans will come and
6:52
destroy both our holy place and our
6:53
nation. What a tragic irony. They are so
6:57
concerned with preserving the temple and
6:59
the nation that they are willing to kill
7:01
the very Messiah who came to fulfill
7:03
Ezekiel's promise. [music] They are so
7:05
focused on protecting their religious
7:06
and political structures that they are
7:09
blind to God's work happening right
7:11
before their eyes. And then Caiaphas,
7:14
thinking he was merely being pragmatic
7:15
and political, uttered a prophecy he
7:18
himself did not understand. It is better
7:20
for one man to die for the people than
7:23
for the whole nation to perish. John
7:25
explains that Caiaphas did not say this
7:28
on his own authority, but as high priest
7:30
that year, he prophesied that Jesus
7:32
would die for the nation. But the
7:34
prophecy goes further. John adds, "And
7:37
not for the nation only, but also to
7:39
gather together the children of God who
7:41
were scattered abroad." Here it is
7:43
Ezekiel's promise finding its
7:45
fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Not only
7:48
gathering the tribes of Israel, but
7:50
gathering all the children of God from
7:51
every nation, tribe, language, and
7:53
people. See how God works even through
7:56
the malevolent intentions of men.
7:58
Caiaphas was planning a political
8:01
But God was orchestrating the greatest
8:03
demonstration of sacrificial love. the
8:05
world has ever seen. The good shepherd
8:08
was about to give his life for the
8:09
sheep, not only of Israel, but of the
8:12
whole world. This is the eternal
8:14
covenant that God promised through
8:16
Ezekiel. Not a covenant based on rituals
8:19
or external laws, but a covenant sealed
8:21
in the very blood of the son of God. A
8:24
covenant that knows no national
8:26
boundaries, that transcends race and
8:28
culture, that unites all believers in
8:30
one body, the church and the sanctuary
8:33
that God promised to establish. It is
8:36
not a temple of stones in Jerusalem. It
8:38
is Christ himself resurrected, dwelling
8:41
in us through the Holy Spirit. Paul
8:44
tells us, "Do you not know that you are
8:46
God's temple and that God's spirit
8:48
dwells in you? Ezekiel's promise, I will
8:51
put my dwelling place among them. finds
8:54
its full fulfillment in every Christian,
8:56
in every faith community where two or
8:58
three gather in the name of Jesus. My
9:01
dear brothers and sisters, we live in
9:02
times of profound division. Our families
9:05
are fragmented. Our communities are
9:08
Our own church, the body of Christ,
9:11
often seems more divided than united.
9:14
Differences of opinion on politics,
9:15
liturgy, social, and moral issues
9:18
separate us from one another. But
9:20
today's readings call us to a greater
9:22
vision. God is at the work of gathering
9:25
his scattered people. He is purifying us
9:28
from our idols, including the idol of
9:31
always being right, of always having to
9:33
win arguments. He is establishing his
9:36
dwelling place among us, not in physical
9:38
structures, but in humble hearts that
9:40
open themselves to his presence. And the
9:43
price of this reunification,
9:45
it was fully paid on the cross. Jesus
9:48
died not only for the Jews, not only for
9:51
the Gentiles, but for all humanity. He
9:53
broke down the wall of separation
9:55
between us. In Christ, there is neither
9:58
Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor
10:00
female. We are all one in Christ Jesus.
10:04
But this unity is not automatic. It
10:07
requires something of us. It requires
10:09
that we abandon our personal idols, our
10:12
pride, our need for control, our
10:14
insistence on doing things our way. It
10:17
requires us to recognize that we are all
10:19
sinners in need of God's grace. It
10:22
requires us to see one another not as
10:24
adversaries to be overcome, but as
10:26
brothers and sisters for whom Christ
10:28
died. The purification that God promised
10:31
through Ezekiel is not a one-time event,
10:33
but an ongoing process. Each day, we are
10:36
called to draw closer to God, to allow
10:39
his spirit to cleanse our hearts, to
10:41
leave behind the things that separate us
10:43
from him and from one another. And as we
10:46
do this, we begin to experience the
10:48
covenant of peace that God promised. Not
10:51
a superficial peace that avoids
10:52
conflict, but a deep peace that comes
10:55
from knowing that we are reconciled to
10:56
God and called to be agents of
10:59
reconciliation in the world. You see,
11:02
Jesus death was not just to save us
11:05
individually, although it certainly does
11:07
that. It was to create a new people, a
11:10
holy nation, a royal priesthood. It was
11:12
to gather the children of God who were
11:14
scattered and make them a united family
11:16
under one shepherd, one king, one Lord.
11:20
And we, my brothers and sisters, are
11:22
part of this family. Every time we
11:24
gather for the Eucharist, we are living
11:26
out Ezekiel's promise. God's sanctuary
11:29
is truly in our midst. In every
11:31
celebration of the mass, heaven and
11:33
earth meet, the divine and the human
11:36
embrace. It is not just bread and wine
11:38
that we receive but Christ himself who
11:40
gave his life to bring us together. So
11:43
what will we do with this truth? How
11:45
will we respond to this sacrificial
11:47
love? How will we be agents of the unity
11:49
that God desires for his people? It
11:52
begins with small steps. Forgiving that
11:55
family member who hurt us. Reaching out
11:58
to that brother or sister in faith with
12:00
whom we had a disagreement. Praying for
12:02
our enemies instead of harboring
12:04
resentment. seeking common ground
12:07
instead of focusing on differences,
12:09
remembering that all of us, all of us
12:11
were bought at the same precious price,
12:14
the blood of Christ. And when we feel
12:16
tempted to despair, when division seems
12:18
insurmountable, when the fragmentation
12:20
of our world weighs us down, let us
12:23
return to the words of Ezekiel, I will
12:25
make a covenant of peace with them, an
12:27
everlasting covenant. This is not a
12:30
conditional promise. It does not depend
12:32
on our limited abilities or our
12:34
imperfect faithfulness. It is a promise
12:37
anchored in the eternal and unchanging
12:38
nature of God. The same God who promised
12:41
to gather the scattered tribes of Israel
12:43
is gathering his children today from all
12:45
corners of the earth. The same Christ
12:48
who died to gather God's children
12:50
continues his work of reconciliation
12:52
through us, his body here on earth. The
12:55
same spirit who dwelt in the temple of
12:56
Jerusalem dwells in us, making us living
12:59
sanctuaries of the most high God. May we
13:02
live up to this calling. May we be
13:04
builders of bridges instead of walls.
13:07
May we be agents of unity instead of
13:09
division. May we reflect in our
13:11
communities, in our families, in our
13:13
church the beauty of God's vision, a
13:15
united, purified people living in
13:18
eternal peace in the presence of their
13:19
God. And may we never forget the price
13:22
that was paid to make this possible. One
13:24
man died for the nation. One man died to
13:27
gather the scattered children of God.
13:30
This man was Jesus Christ, our Lord, our
13:32
Savior, our shepherd, our King. May the
13:34
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love
13:36
of God the Father, and the fellowship of
13:39
the Holy Spirit be with you all, uniting
13:42
us in one heart and one soul for the
13:50
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
13:52
battle. be our protection against the
13:54
wickedness and snares of the devil. May
13:57
God rebuke him, [music] we humbly pray.
14:00
And do thou, O prince of the heavenly
14:03
host, by the power of God, cast into
14:06
hell Satan and all the evil spirits who
14:09
prowl throughout the world seeking the
14:11
ruin of souls. Amen.
