Trump Expands Steel And Aluminum Tariffs, Covering Hundreds Of New Imports
Trump’s administration expanded its 50% steel and aluminum tariffs on Monday to cover 407 additional product categories, according to CNBC. The levies now extend to items such as fire extinguishers, machinery, construction materials, plastics, and specialty chemicals. Under Secretary Jeffrey Kessler said the expanded tariffs close loopholes and bolster the revitalization of U.S. steel and aluminum industries. Trump has used sector-specific tariffs as part of his trade agenda, including a June move to double steel and aluminum import tariffs to 50%, creating uncertainty for businesses and trading partners. The White House did not respond to questions from CNBC on whether the new metal tariffs are in addition to Trump’s existing country-specific tariffs.
