Dr Christoph Semler was good enough to spare us his valuable time earlier to discuss the Coronavirus outbreak and how we may be affected here in Spain/Europe. He appeared to be a little camera-shy and so we moved it halfway through.

it's exactly half past ten mainland
0:06
Spain half past nine in the UK and
0:08
Canaries the time advertised as we put
0:10
on our Facebook page and through
0:11
Instagram as well for an extraordinary
0:13
medical matters mid adopter semla who is
0:16
in for as I say just a focus on
0:19
coronavirus earn so welcome back has
0:22
been a while have been a while indeed
0:23
good morning okay fine yes can't blame
0:26
my no no not we don't take you
0:28
personally that we don't shake hands
0:29
when you come in on reserves that's good
0:31
practice right
0:32
it is good practically if we're talking
0:34
about the current is it called an
0:36
epidemic a pandemic
0:37
well it's a epidemic because broody
0:40
hasn't caused a lot of trouble outside
0:41
China hmm now this is a thing which
0:44
should we be panicking or or not know
0:47
that for the time being now with what we
0:50
now today there is no need to panic for
0:52
us here in Europe or outside China
0:54
anyway things seem to be well under
0:56
control the travelers are being screened
1:00
so far virtually no in illness has been
1:04
imported into Europe at all the pinna
1:07
couple of cases endure in in Spain there
1:10
are two people taken into hospital in
1:12
Spain one on the Canary Islands
1:13
one-on-one and Palma de Majorca I think
1:15
on Eric Islands the one on the Canary
1:18
Islands was found to be not a carrier of
1:21
the illness the one on the balearic
1:24
islands that are not probably not either
1:25
I think it it was but they got over it
1:29
most people get overrun yes of course
1:31
the degree of getting the likelihood of
1:34
getting seriously ill is very very very
1:36
low probably lower than it is with the
1:37
usual flu viruses we get every winter
1:40
anyway it's not as deadly as the flu
1:44
virus even it seems for the time at the
1:46
moment assumably because you know what
1:48
people are like they used to read it
1:49
there and you feel it's there I mean if
1:53
you had any people come to use mommy no
1:55
but you know what particularly if you
1:57
get to a certain age in dare I say the
1:58
Brits as well they think slightest
2:00
symptoms all that's definitely it I've
2:02
got it
2:02
no we haven't had anybody who thought
2:05
they might have it and there's nobody I
2:06
thought he might have it in fact there
2:09
hasn't even been very much of the usual
2:11
seasonal flu about it seems to be a
2:13
fairly healthy winter for the time being
2:15
there hasn't been any big outbreak of
2:17
anything
2:17
even the ordinary common flu at the
2:19
moment here's something I wanted to ask
2:21
you I'll get on to some of the basic
2:23
principles you know avoiding infection
2:25
just generally in a moment as a medical
2:28
professional where do you get the
2:30
information from so something comes to
2:32
lights like the corona virus you
2:34
obviously not getting it out of fur or
2:35
Facebook in the light you getting from
2:37
her info where does it come from the
2:39
government the Department of Health both
2:40
from a drift as the regional one in
2:42
Valencia they have developed and
2:44
published guidelines that guide doctors
2:46
how to react in face of a patient you
2:49
suspect might carry that particular
2:52
illness they are well established well
2:53
detailed guidelines what to do who to
2:56
call where to send what measures to take
2:58
so dr. Sandler is in from uro clinica in
3:00
habia and as I say it could be to come
3:02
in because we know you're a busy chap
3:03
but just kind of putting people's mind
3:06
at ease a little bit as far as
3:08
coronavirus goes because you never know
3:09
what to believe particularly these days
3:11
when you got you your social media and
3:13
people plucking things out of the air
3:15
and also I mean there was concern about
3:17
you know an initially the breakout of
3:19
how much actual root proper information
3:22
you get from Chinese well government and
3:24
shiny state media there's the thing it's
3:26
a different matter we don't know but we
3:27
have to take at face value what comes
3:29
from there there's no other way of
3:30
getting more information but I think
3:32
they're fairly decent about how they how
3:36
they communicate with the rest of the
3:37
world so just talking about a lot of it
3:39
I've seen the World Health Organization
3:41
the info they put out taking the basic
3:43
steps it's probably good practice a lot
3:46
of it anyway on a daily basis yes it's
3:48
sensible it's a virus that lives in the
3:51
Airways of the human body it likes our
3:53
throats and it likes our lower Airways
3:55
the bronchi and the lung tissue itself
3:57
it gets spread through coughing and
4:01
sneezing through anything that comes out
4:03
of our nose or out of our mouth where it
4:05
has been sitting at multiplying before
4:07
if people sneeze or cough on their hands
4:11
they will have the little droplets on
4:12
their hands they don't wash their hands
4:14
they don't wipe their hands they take
4:16
hold of a door handle they touch the
4:17
surface of a desk they hold the strap in
4:20
the underground the virus will be there
4:23
it's a new virus one doesn't really know
4:26
too much about its abilities to live
4:30
outside the
4:31
body but it probably can live for at
4:33
least half an hour at temperatures of 20
4:35
degrees and not too dry an atmosphere
4:37
outside the human body meaning somebody
4:41
who carries the virus might not be aware
4:42
of it
4:43
coughs has got the droplets on their
4:45
hands shakes your hands you've got the
4:47
virus living on your hands for 20
4:49
minutes what can you do not to get the
4:52
infection you wash your hands you don't
4:54
shake hands or you have a disinfectant
4:56
with you to clean your hands that is
4:59
true for all viruses that gets
5:01
transmitted through the airways and
5:03
droplets that come from coughing and
5:05
sneezing what am what could the masks
5:08
doing if anything of course they are a
5:10
barrier people sneeze people coughing s
5:12
we sneeze as we coughed be spread out
5:14
droplets in a almost in a hemisphere
5:18
around us and if you're next to somebody
5:19
who coughs and sneezes you breathe it in
5:22
with your next breath it's been shown
5:24
that if you stay close to somebody
5:26
within 2 meters distance for more than
5:29
five minutes and the other person coughs
5:31
and sneezes you're going to breathe it
5:32
in and you can't avoid it the mask would
5:34
certainly stop that it'll keep most of
5:36
what the carrier would dissipate around
5:40
them in the mask and what little can
5:42
escape through the sides of the mask you
5:45
stop from breathing in yourself by
5:47
wearing your own mask it's a very very
5:49
efficient way of stopping the spread of
5:50
infection well they've been doing a
5:52
roaring trade the sellers of first mass
5:54
and all sold out in parts of China and
5:56
elsewhere a very sensible measure to
5:59
something yeah Oh anything else we need
6:01
to mention hurt this stage really well
6:03
at the moment there is no quarrel no
6:05
virus in Spain and it is probably
6:06
unlikely that we will see a bad outbreak
6:09
here occurring how the the case you
6:12
started a new case is starting to to
6:14
fall a little bit in China yes well
6:18
let's hope that is the beginning of a
6:19
trend downwards I mean they have taken
6:21
very very drastic measures of the
6:23
Chinese authorities and let's hope they
6:25
they take effect in that the spread is
6:28
being contained and the number of newly
6:30
infected people just drops that's the
6:34
aim of of their measures to break the
6:36
chain of passing on the illness of the
6:38
chain of transmission
6:40
that's why they put everybody in
6:41
quarantine to not let them coffin on
6:43
they're still healthy neighbors mm-hmm
6:45
what was the quarantine period is it a
6:47
couple of weeks it is two weeks though
6:50
probably yes the quarantine period is
6:53
two weeks the incubation period is
6:54
between two and 11 days that means you
6:56
catch the virus today from the third day
6:58
onwards for another 11 days you carry it
7:01
openly in your throat and in your
7:03
Airways and are able to pass it on
7:05
through coughing and sneezing but the
7:07
the period for which you are infectious
7:10
having been diagnosed is all the
7:13
quarantine period is 14 days 2 weeks
