Disinfect your phone? Let's check it out
0:10
Dave Taylor here, and let's talk about germs for a second. It's a really good time to be thinking about germs and bacteria and other crud that gets on
0:18
your phone. Sure, you can wipe it down to get the dirt off, but what about those germs
0:23
So, enter this. This is the Cucamber UV cell phone sanitizer and it does the magic by using UVC bulbs. So the idea is you open it up, you put your
0:38
phone or anything else that'll fit in this size compartment into the unit. You close it
0:44
you push the button and then the UV lights turn on. In fact, we can simulate that by
0:49
turning it on. I don't think you can really tell, but there's bulbs, there's illumination
0:54
on both sides. So UVC is not something you really want to be looking at. So we're
0:59
just going to let it do that. But it's actually super interesting. So it has dual UVC bulbs
1:05
It's a six minute process. I suppose I might as well take my iPhone 11 Pro, put it in here
1:12
close it. And now since I already turned it on, it's now disinfecting. That's pretty cool. So it kills
1:18
99.9% of bacteria. And it works at the 253.7 nanometer wavelength. In case you really need to know that
1:27
right? So it can handle phones up to 6.9 inches. You can see in this close-up that my big iPhone
1:34
there's still plenty of space around it. Now, what you can't tell what's super cool is it also
1:39
has a built-in Chi wireless charging system. Now, it's not super fast, but while you're having your
1:46
phone in here working, it actually is also charging it. That's pretty sweet. It also offers
1:53
aromatherapy of all things if you really want your phone to smell like road roses then you can put a couple of drops in and then when you use this it actually warms that spot up and releases the aroma and that theoretically
2:07
it binds with your phone, so your phone smells really nice for a little while
2:11
I think that will eventually probably go away. It's powered by a micro USB, so if I unplug it, the micro USB is in the back
2:20
It includes the cord, but it doesn't include the charger, so it's a
2:24
the B-Y-O-C device, as many of these are. Another thing they've done that's really slick is there's also a USB plug inside
2:32
So if you want to charge it and you don't have wireless charging, you can plug in your cord and sort of snake it around, put your device in, and then you can actually be charging during that six minutes
2:43
Now, what they recommend is you do six minutes in one orientation and then six minutes in the other orientation
2:49
So, all right, 12 minutes total, right? So lots to like about this
2:53
There's a lot of neat features they thought through. The whole system feels nice
2:59
I like that it's a touch button that you just, you don't have to push anything down
3:03
So it's just touch sensitive. Super easy to work with. Which leads to the question, all right, does it work with COVID-19
3:10
So I did some homework on that. It turns out there are three frequencies of UV or ultraviolet light
3:17
And there's UVA, which is what gives your sunburn. And UVB, which also gives you sunburn
3:22
and UVC, which is not generally found in nature so much. And so the UVC is what they use to like sterilize things in a hospital
3:33
So this uses that UVC frequency. There's also a high UVC, but that's something they're still doing research on
3:41
So there is data to show that UVC does actually get in the way of like SARS viruses
3:48
And SARS is very similar to the coronavirus. Now I can say nor can they that if you put your phone in here it will kill any COVID that you might have gotten on it But it going to do something It definitely going to help So if you in a highly
4:04
infectious environment, this is probably not going to be enough. But if you had this in your pocket while
4:09
you're at the store and then you get out and you're worried, you put this in here. And it will kill
4:14
all the germs. It will most likely do an acceptable job with the coronavirus too. Again, I can't
4:22
guarantee anything, and I know if you do the kind of research I do, then you'll find that there's
4:27
arguments pro and con. So don't use this for that purpose. It's probably not strong enough to really
4:33
truly disinfect your phone fully, but it will kill all the bacteria. And if you do the full
4:40
12-minute process, okay, that 12 minutes is a long time, but you could plug this into your computer
4:46
right? Because it's just a USB plug. You could plug this into your computer, and at any point
4:51
you could drop your phone in or your friend's phones or your family's phones or anything else you can put in here
4:56
including yes you could put a mask in here i don't know what it would do whether it would be of any benefit
5:02
but yeah you could put a face mask in here and use this to uv sterilize it and i use sterilize loosely so
5:08
don't hold me to this i can't say anything about the medical background of this and i can't say that
5:14
i've run lab tests on this but it still will get your bacteria it will still make your phone
5:19
cleaner than when you put it in. And that's pretty nice, right? So I'll tell you just a little bit more
5:25
about it. Let me pull my phone out so it doesn't fall out. So it is nine inches tall by four and a half
5:34
inches wide by 1.3 inches tall and it is 10.2 ounces. So the whole thing's really light. There's a lot I
5:42
like about it. I will say that the way they designed it, it feels a little flimsy. The top, the way
5:49
this hinges I wish they had put something to actually maybe have some slight felt or something here And when you put your phone on here as with so many wireless chargers it important to position it in the right place So if I just I not paying
6:05
attention and have my phone go all the way to an end or something, then like this, it's not
6:11
charging. But if I put it into the middle, now it's charging. I hope you saw the screen light up
6:16
right? So, you know, that's a nuance that you'll have to get used to. But once you do that and do that
6:23
I'm disinfecting it's pretty nice right so only thing left to talk about is the price
6:28
and it's actually not an unreasonably priced product but before we get there I'm
6:33
gonna ask if you can subscribe to my channel really appreciate when you do and
6:37
you'll be able to stay in touch with me and I give you fair straightforward and
6:41
honest reviews of products and I publish a lot of stuff because I get a lot of
6:45
product so go ahead and tap or click on that subscribe button awesome now this lift it up
6:52
this now my phone's not charging so it goes this is the Cucamber UV cell phone
6:59
sanitizer and it's 4199 on Amazon so definitely worth checking out and if you're
7:06
worried about having your phone be nice and clean and getting rid of the germs and
7:11
bacteria not just getting rid of the dust and dirt then this is a really great
7:16
addition to how you're generally working with your phone or just put your phone
7:20
in here we have one of these and And honestly, my kids, we just are putting our phones in probably every couple hours, actually
7:28
And it's just keeping them germ-free. And that's a good thing. So with that, I'll catch you in my next video
