Turn your Amazon Echo into an Apple HomePod? Well, sort of
0:11
Dave Taylor here, and this time I'm looking at a product that I can't actually understand what
0:15
its purpose is. So, that's this. This is the Yawayner 3D Stereo Making Charging Dock Protective
0:24
case for the Amazon Echo second generation. What is it? It's a shell. It's a hollow thing
0:30
that has a little, I don't know, piece of rubber on the bottom, right? And it has the shell
0:37
which has a mesh on it that, yes, does actually have the same dimensions as the Apple HomePod
0:44
but I don't really get what it does. So here's a second generation Amazon Echo. And if you
0:50
pop the skin off, which comes off conveniently. Now you have the naked Echo. Awkward, but you know
0:59
so their intention is that you put this in and now you have something that has all the functionality
1:05
of the Echo, but looks like a HomePod. The problem is, is the design just doesn't really work very
1:11
well. So for example, we'll put this in here. There's nothing that actually holds it in place
1:18
so when I do this now first off need to get the wire running through so this is just the Amazon
1:26
charger and it's not even a charger it's just a power plug right and then you run it through here
1:33
let me actually go ahead and do that first so we put it through plug it in just like we normally and now let pull the slack back So as you can see we now have this set up and then i suppose
1:50
we just put this on top and it's a little fussy about the size of the power cord sticking out
1:59
so what they might have done is they might have included a power cord that actually
2:04
maybe has an L connector on it, but yeah, I think I'm going to have to do this the more complicated
2:12
way. So we'll do this. We'll run it through here and see, this is live. This is me figuring this
2:19
thing out. So now we put it on here. We put the base unit in. We pull all the slack wire as we go
2:28
and we put the echo and see now it fits in with the power cord we put the echo in and with any
2:36
luck it fits on properly and there you have it now it does include this cover but the cover doesn't
2:44
make any sense because then you can't whoa let's try that again then you can't access all the
2:50
buttons on the top of the echo so i'm not sure why you would not want to do that but if you didn't
2:56
want to do it. I suppose you can do this and now it really looks like an Amazon HomePod, sorry
3:01
an Apple HomePod. But why? I don't get it. Take this off and now you have all the buttons and you
3:08
have this bigger case. But honestly, this case actually looks better to me and it's actually
3:14
nicer materials. So this is one of these things where I don't get it. They say that it's 3D
3:20
stereo making What makes it more 3D than the original Echo already is The Echo already has a 360 degree sound This does not add anything There is no speaker There is no subwoofer There nothing in this And it says charging dock
3:36
There's no charging dock. There's nothing electrical in this particular product. Nada
3:42
It is just a plastic base. And you then end up using the same charging cable you would anyway
3:47
So I don't get it. Protective case. Okay, well, I guess it protects it
3:52
But so does this. and this comes with the door and echo. So what the heck? I don't understand. Now it says that it can
4:00
turn not just a second generation echo, which is this guy into an Apple HomePod, sort of, right
4:08
It's not going to suddenly answer to, Hey Siri, but it also says that it works with the dot. And
4:14
if you're going to use the dot, then it's going to be way down here. This might then make sense
4:18
but then you don't have access to the buttons on the top of the dot. What
4:23
So maybe the intention is to have a riser so then the dot would be at the top of this
4:28
and then you'd have the buttons but they don't include that part so I'm not sure exactly how you would actually come up with something
4:34
that's about 7 inches tall and is actually a little space buffer
4:39
Oh well. It also says on their Amazon page that it works with the Echo First Generation
4:44
but the Echo First Generation is 9 1⁄4 inches tall. That would make it this tall, which would look a little bit more like a popsicle or an old German hand grenade and not like an Apple HomePod
4:56
So honestly, I really am intrigued by this product because I just don't get it
5:02
Maybe somewhere out there there's someone that says, hey, that's a really cool idea
5:06
I can just take my really nicely designed Amazon Echo and give it sort of a bigger fatter skirt to wear or something I don even know how I describe this But honestly when it comes down to it
5:20
personally, I have to say, I don't really understand. Unless I wanted to mess with my friends
5:27
then have them think I have a gray HomePod. Otherwise, I would just have my Echo like this
5:33
And I would have this sitting in storage or maybe still in the warehouse at Amazon
5:38
So really, what do you think? Tell me, would you want to buy a product that looks like a HomePod but gives you zero additional functionality over just your Echo
5:48
Let me know in the comments. Also, while you're there, go ahead and click on subscribe and thumbs up if this is intelligent and valuable and thoughtful and smart and whatever else you want to say about it
5:59
Or totally crazy. It's all good. Which means the only thing left to talk about is the price
6:06
this ya winner 3d stereo making charging dock protective case whoo it's a lot of words will
6:14
cost you 23.99 at amazon.com and it comes in gray and it also comes in white so you can decide if
6:21
this makes sense or if you want to just have your little amazon echo second generation skinny and
6:28
svelte and attractive so it's up to you this is dave taylor i'm pretty sure that i'm going to stick
6:33
with this design personally and I will catch you in my next video
