hi Dave Taylor here and I have a problem
0:06
with my macbook pro now hold on it's a
0:09
great computer has the Retina screen it
0:12
has as much memory as I could put it in
0:14
and has as much hard drive well
0:16
solid-state drive as I could get when I
0:18
bought it but that's only 256 Meg and
0:21
that's not a lot of space when you do
0:23
video work so I've been stuck so trying
0:27
to figure it out I finally realized that
0:29
other world computing now has
0:31
solid-state drive upgrades that work
0:34
with the MacBook Pro so I contacted them
0:37
and got the envoy pro this is initially
0:40
it's a USB 3 system but it's actually a
0:44
480 gigabyte drive and it's expensive
0:48
it's 579 bucks so it's not something
0:51
that you can just go and get on a whim
0:53
but on the other hand when you need more
0:55
space boy it's really worth it so the
0:58
thing is it's kind of tricky to get this
1:01
to work the first step as I'll show you
1:04
real in this sort of speeded up video
1:06
the first step is to take the little
1:08
solid-state drive open up the little
1:11
drive holder that comes with this
1:13
package put the solid-state drive it
1:16
looks like a circuit board put that in
1:18
zip the whole thing closed and then I
1:21
used carbon copy cloner and you can just
1:24
use the 30-day trial to make a perfect
1:27
copy of everything that's on my existing
1:29
Drive oh you're back good so what I did
1:33
was I then made a copy of every single
1:36
file every application every preference
1:40
of resetting all my system preferences
1:42
everything copied on to this little
1:45
drive right in here as you now know is
1:48
the new circuit board now
1:51
the way to test this before you
1:54
disassemble your computer because of
1:55
course you don't want to do that just to
1:57
find it didn't work is you can actually
1:59
boot your computer off of the external
2:01
drive one nice thing about Mavericks
2:03
which is what I'm running so you do that
2:06
by when you're booting up hold down the
2:07
option key gives you lots of choices
2:10
choose the newly named
2:12
new external drive worked for me my
2:16
computer's up it's running which now
2:19
means I'm ready to shut it down
2:21
disassemble the computer disassembled
2:24
the drive carrier unit swap them and
2:27
then reassemble everything and hopefully
2:30
what will happen is my computer will now
2:33
have the larger drive as its main drive
2:36
and then the external drive will be what
2:40
is now my existing drive follow all that
2:43
so it's going to involve a lot of
2:46
screwing and unscrewing and luckily part
2:49
of the package they send includes these
2:50
Torx screw drivers they're kind of
2:52
tricky so if you'll excuse me I got a
2:57
little bit of disassembly to do as you
2:59
can imagine the first step is to take
3:01
the back plate off to do this we need
3:04
one of these handy Torx screw drivers
3:07
so the Torx is a it's a different sort
3:11
of head it's designed actually so people
3:13
won't do what we're doing but as you
3:17
take your screws out very carefully put
3:19
them aside you don't want to lose any of
3:21
them in this process so that's - and
3:26
I'll speed up this video so you don't
3:28
have to actually be bored watching us
3:35
okay now we're done let's see if the
3:38
back comes off hopefully it does without
3:40
too much hassle there we go
3:44
let's take this apart nice and quick so
3:46
this one's easy it's only two screws and
3:52
we using the long screwdriver let's try
3:53
again one
4:02
- so we want to find something that
4:05
looks like that and that is right here
4:09
so what we need to do is we need to
4:12
slide it out and there's a single screw
4:15
holding it in let me zoom in for a
4:18
second so you can see what I'm talking
4:19
about okay so now you can see right here
4:22
that's what we want to replace with the
4:24
new unit so what we need to do is take
4:28
our existing screwdriver and there's the
4:32
single screw that doesn't work let's try
4:34
this one and there we go so we take that
4:39
screw out and the drive pops out that's
4:47
pretty handy we'll put that aside and
4:49
there's only one way these things can
4:52
fit because of the way the slots work so
4:55
now we'll put the new one in gentle a
4:59
little pressure and we'll take that
5:02
screw we just took out and put it back
5:04
in
5:12
that's all we got to do now we just need
5:14
to reassemble the computer so I'm not
5:16
going to bother to show you that part
5:18
that's pretty easy actually put the
5:20
cover on it put all the screws back in
5:22
alright so i reassemble Devery thing and
5:25
I plugged the drive in as an external
5:28
just to see and as you can see the old
5:31
drive shows up and it has just like 38
5:34
gigabytes of space available really not
5:36
very much but here's what's cool is it
5:39
actually booted now I admit I had a
5:42
little bit of anxiety where and I pushed
5:44
the button and I'm like wow hope this
5:48
works and it did and it boots up and now
5:50
as you can see I have a ton of free
5:52
space so really nice performance and
5:55
everything it's gonna be the same it's a
5:57
solid-state drive so with really
6:00
probably realistically 15 or 20 minutes
6:02
worth of work and a little bit of detail
6:04
work it's it's pretty tricky stuff
6:06
working with these tiny screws so there
6:09
you have it the o WC envoy pro 480
6:12
gigabytes about 579 bucks is it worth
6:16
the upgrade to double my disk space oh
6:18
yeah it's absolutely worth it and I am
6:21
looking forward to a new lease on life
6:23
with my macbook pro so check it out
6:25
check out other world computing see what
