The Slick Tapplock One+ Fingerprint Padlock - Reviewed

A padlock with a fingerprint sensor

Let's see how this works. Dave Taylor here and I'm looking at this

This is the TapLock 1 plus fingerprint and Bluetooth padlock. Yep, it's a heavy duty padlock that you can unlock with your fingerprint or through your phone

Let's actually give it a test. I'm going to turn it on. I will push my thumb on it and it's unlocked

and it's unlocked. Now, that is pretty sweet. So when I'm ready, I close it up again, and it's locked

So it's all set up. Or I can actually use the app

But let's actually talk about this a little bit before I show you the app. So first off is it's a 7mm reinforced

stainless steel and zinc layered shackle, because this part's actually pretty important

And then the unit itself, it's pretty heavy, but it's a fast fingerprint sensor

They say that it works under a second. So let's watch that again and see how fast that works

So go. So that's pretty darn fast, right? And it stores up to, and I don't know why you would need this, 500 fingerprints

So if you have, I don't know what, a hundred friends, each of which wants five of their fingers into this thing, I guess you could do that

Now, one thing it does that's really cool is it keeps a history of who unlocked it

So if you do give, for example, tenants access to your lock, you can then later look at the log history of the lock and see who unlocked it when

And I'll show you that in just a second. Now, it also lets you unlock via Bluetooth

And to get to Bluetooth, you double push. There's a little tiny button under here

And you can see it's flashing blue. So now I go into my app on my iPhone

They also have an Android version. And let me just get to the app

One, two. Here it is, and it's disconnected, but okay, now it's connected

So now watch this when I unlock. So there you go, so I can unlock it from the phone

and it shows that in its history too, so very slick. Now, what happens if the battery dies

Now to be fair the battery probably not gonna die on you It has 3 unlocks per charge which they figure lasts a year I figure it more than a year But the thing is every time you Bluetooth pair it with the app it shows you the battery charge

So if you see this thing getting down to like 20% or 10%, what are you going to do

You're going to say, well, I need to charge it. So it's super easy. Sort of

So you charge using this custom cable. And I guess it's not unreasonable that it's a custom cable, but it's a magnet catch

that connects to a spot on the bottom. And now the other end is just a regular USB connection

so you plug it into anything. You could, I suppose, plug it into your computer, but generally a wall charger like for your phone

And it charges, takes a couple hours, and then you're good for another year

So super easy. Now, I will say that I do have some criticism

as I do, a lot of smart watches and fitness bands have the same issue, where it's a custom cable

it's a custom connection. You're not going to find this. Radio Shack. Oh, sorry. Forget Radio Shack. You're not going to find this on Amazon. You would, you know, if you don't have this cable, if you can't find this cable, you are out of luck. I was going to say S-O-L, but I guess I can just say that anyway. So that's a bummer because that means you have to track this cable to use once every, I don't know, eight to 10 months. But I guess you can put it in the box, and then the box you can just go ahead and leave on a shelf somewhere. But that's kind of a drag all in all. On the other hand, I

I guess I understand their logic of not having it just be like a micro USB connection

Although, again, I'm not sure where that would be such a crisis, but custom cable, not necessarily the best thing

Now, it's also IP67 water and weatherproof, and it works from minus 4 Fahrenheit up to 149 degrees Fahrenheit

Frankly, if it's 149 degrees Fahrenheit out and you're touching a metal lock

owie. That's not going to feel good. So it will definitely handle being outside on a shed or in your garage

garage or whatever a storage locker on the back of your pickup truck all of that

will work fine so let me now take you through the app just a little bit so the

apps actually kind of slick as you can see it supports you having lots and lots

of different locks I call this one double tap we get to the whole sort of James bomb thing in a minute and then once you choose it you can see that you can unlock it via Bluetooth or you can actually go ahead and you can add a fingerprint Oops And if you add a fingerprint you can name the fingerprint which obviously is smart

And it's actually really easy to add a fingerprint because once it's Bluetooth paired

you literally just put your finger on it and boop done. So if you're used to like adding a fingerprint to the sensor on your phone, that's a tedious

process where you do it. So you get a lot of coverage. This seems to be a much more sophisticated sensor

Then again, it is a bigger sensor, so maybe that's part of what that works too

And then finally, here's that I was telling you. Here's the history. So you can see that I set up my left thumb is John Doe, and my right thumb is Dave Taylor

So depending on which one I use, I can actually unlock it. Now, that's going to be recorded as John Doe unlocked it

Or if I do it with my other thumb, it will be recorded as I unlocked it

So that's just an example of how that history is really a terrific little feature

Having said all of that, I will tell you that the company has had some issues with vulnerabilities

And some of the stuff that came up when the product first hit the market because people love hacking locks

So they love looking at vulnerabilities. So the first thing is that people observe that with enough enthusiasm, you can cut the zinc alloy case

And it's just like, yeah, okay. So, you know, the purpose of any padlock is to make it harder

You can't make it impossible for someone to get in because frankly, they can rip off the door

or tear off the hinges or cut a wall out, right? Depending on what you're trying to protect, all you're trying to do is make it so that the

casual person walking by doesn't just have an unlocked door or an unlocked, I don't know

cabinet or an unlocked storage toolbox and then pops it open, right

So this just makes it harder. So, yeah, you can cut it. Okay. There was an issue with the Bluetooth security, and that turned out not to be a big deal because they've already issued a patch and solved that problem

The app had some flaws again, tap locks already addressed that. So by the time you get this now, you are lucky because you get all the solutions to all of these problems

And then finally, someone said that there was a way to open the back, and I'm pretty sure that that's bogus

And the company said that not possible unless he had a flawed product So again this is not the ultimate end Uber security device So this is not going to solve every security issue you ever had And

you know, it's not going to make it where it's like, hey, it's Fort Knox and a tiny little padlock

But that's not what you're buying. You're buying something that makes it harder for someone to get in

not impossible. And frankly, if this thing did fail, I would not want to have to, like, you know

hire someone with a laser torch cutter to be able to open it. So maybe that's the wrong logic on

my part. But if this is for like your gym locker or for that toolbox in the back of your pickup or

for the storage shed in the back of your house, I think this is going to work just fine. This is

you know, plenty enough. It's secure enough. It handles the weather. It has a high coolness factor

And I think it's pretty darn cool that I can just put my finger on it and it unlocks. That's pretty

sweet. So having said that, the only other thing to talk about is the price, but before we get to the price, let me ask if you can click on that subscribe button. of, again, things like the unlock history and Bluetooth, and there's a way to share Bluetooth and

stuff. So there's some really cool other features I haven't touched on, but touched on. See

fingerprint, touch. So I actually really like this, and I think I'm going to throw this in my gym bag

because this has that certain level of, you know, coolness and tech to it that I really like
