A wired lavalier mic for your phone and camera
0:03
Let's check it out. Dave Taylor here, and I want to talk about microphones
0:15
Specifically, I want to talk about the microphone I'm actually using right now
0:19
So you can see, here's a close up, this is the microphone that I have
0:24
It's a wired lavalier mic, and about three feet down the wire is this big
0:29
switchbox and this actually is a rechargeable battery which is really handy and it
0:36
does powered or unpowered which gives it a huge range of capabilities this is
0:43
the Maono AU 100 R rechargeable lab microphone and I will tell you I've been
0:49
using Mauna microphones for a really long time and I was really enthused when they
0:54
came out with this new rechargeable one because it's a little tedious to have these
0:59
little tiny watch batteries and to hope that it's not going to die halfway through a recording
1:04
This is a much better design. Now, on the other end of it, which I have hooked up to my actual
1:10
video camera, is a 3.5 millimeter jack. Now, that turns out to work with a wide variety of devices
1:18
For example, I can use it with my iPhone 12 Pro by using this little tiny lightning to 3.5
1:26
millimeter adapter. So what does that sound like? Well, here's a demo of me talking and recording it in the voice memo app
1:35
This is a recording off the Apple iPhone. I plugged it in using the adapter, and I'm about 10 feet away from the phone right now, just talking at a regular volume
1:45
So it's actually pretty clean, right? Now, what about our computer? So MacBook Pro, I did the same thing. I used Audacity, program I really love. It's a
1:56
great piece of open source software and does everything you could possibly want
2:01
let you edit MP3s save things in different formats It very very flexible piece of software In this case I hooked it up made sure I had chosen this microphone
2:12
I have to point at the right thing, as my input, and then here's a demo of my recording on the MacBook Pro from a far distance
2:21
I'm standing about 15 feet away from my MacBook Pro right now
2:25
and just talking into the microphone in power off position. And you can hear, it sounds pretty clean
2:32
Again, really clean recording and the fact that I don't have to worry about or rely on the microphone that's built into my computer just ups my audio game and that's a good thing
2:43
That's what you want. You want to sound the best you can. I'm not sure why Alexa is chatting right now, but we'll ignore her
2:51
A lot of devices listening to me. So, let's talk about the microphone
2:55
So it works with smartphones, DSLRs, video gear. and here's a close-up, which is important
3:03
You can see that there's a little slider switch. If I slide this into the off position
3:08
it is not giving enough microphone volume power to my video camera, and you won't be able to hear me
3:15
On the other hand, if I have it in the on position
3:19
when I plug it into my phone or computer, it won't work. So a tiny bit of trial and error there
3:25
but generally speaking, that smartphones, your Android, phone, your iPhone, whatever it is, they're going to be happier with it in the off position
3:34
whereas cameras and video systems are more happy with it being in the on position
3:40
It's pretty easy to tell. You try it, it doesn't work, you try the other switch, right
3:44
Now, one of the things they've done that's really smart is when you turn on the power
3:49
for just a second or so, there's a little tiny LED that gives you feedback by color
3:55
If it comes up green, you have more than 20% charge, which probably means you're good to go for whatever you're about to do
4:03
If you turn it on and it's red, it's time to charge it. So, easy enough
4:08
They say it a 90 standby It doesn say how many hours of active use but my experience is that I charge it once every so often and it seems to work fine for many many many hours
4:19
When you are ready to charge it, there is a micro USB connection on the back of this and the corresponding wire in the box
4:27
In fact, let's look in the box and see what else is in here. So, user manual and much more helpful for some cases, especially if you want to use it
4:39
if you can get it out. If you want to use it with more like sort of recording music type devices
4:46
is a 3.5 to 6.35 adapter. So that gives you that quarter inch jack
4:52
And then it also includes, as you would expect, a micro USB charging cable, which is helpful
4:59
and this not entirely great, not entirely horrible, little carrying bag. It's sort of a, I don't know, a plasticy fabric
5:09
not my favorite. And it does have what's in here. There's some at the bottom. Ah, it comes with a spare
5:17
wind cover for the microphone. So let's have a close-up of the microphone itself. And you can see
5:23
here it is without the wind cover. And it's pretty cool looking little device. And then you just put
5:29
this wind cover over it. And if you're talking directly into the mic, it will help a little bit with the
5:34
pop of your peas. But if you're outside, it'll help a little bit. It'll help a little bit
5:39
to cut down the ambient wind noise, which otherwise can be really annoying
5:43
Now, what's really great about this, what I really like is it comes with a 19-foot cable
5:49
So this wire that goes to here is fairly short, but from here all the way to my camera is 19 feet
5:58
which means I have a lot of range and I can set up something like this
6:03
and ordinarily this is all tucked in my shirt and coming out and behind and under the table
6:07
and everything, so you can't see any of it. But I've been using this mic for the last month or two, and it's fantastic
6:13
You can hear it sounds really good And when I tell you the price you going to be like oh that a no I just need to buy one So really it a no You just go need to buy one So let before we talk about the price let me just ask you if you would be so kind as to subscribe to my channel
6:30
Really appreciate that. It's that little red button on the lower right, a click or a tap
6:35
And boom, you're subscribed. And I put out a lot of consumer electronics reviews
6:40
And I am super honest. That's my thing. Is I'm going to call it as it is, tell you what's bad and tell you what's
6:46
good. This, I'm a huge fan of Mauna microphones. As are many other vloggers and
6:52
YouTubers and stuff, they just make really good gear at a crazy cheap price. So, how much
6:58
is this? AU100R? Well, all right, this, this, this, wire, whatever, whatever you want
7:07
to point at. This is the Maono AU 100R rechargeable lab mic and it is 2599 at
7:16
Amazon.com. $25 for a solid, wired microphone that you can use in a wide variety of settings
7:24
with a wide variety of devices and get good results every time. Kind of a no-brainer. Just go and
7:30
click on the link in my description and grab one. They're really that good. I have been relying
7:35
on my own own microphones for years here on YouTube and I often have people say, wow, what kind
7:41
of gear do you have? You sound really good. So you can assess and decide for yourself, but
7:46
now you know one of my secrets is this microphone so definitely worth checking out so leave me some
7:53
comments give me some feedback let me know what you wish I would have tested or demonstrated
7:57
at trying to figure out all the main use cases but hey you never know so give me some feedback
8:02
and then I will hope to see you in my next video
