Earbuds with a detachable boom mic? Turns out that they're great for phonecalls and video chat, offering MUCH better voice quality with far more comfort than a full over-the-head headset. Tech expert and audio fan Dave Taylor checks out the JLab Work Buds In-Ear Headset with Boom Mic and finds that there's really a lot to like, particularly if you're a work-from-home sort of person or are a remote call center team member. Includes demos!

True wireless stereo earbuds with a built-in boom mic
0:03
Let's check these out. Dave Taylor here and I'm checking out this
0:14
This is the J-Lab work buds in-ear headset and as you can see it has a built-in boom microphone
0:21
Now this is detachable which is great because you can put it on either ear
0:26
depending on what's comfortable to you. And once you have it in, and it just plugs right in, it's pretty easy to work with
0:33
then all you have to do is put it in your ear and then adjust the mic to be in front of your mouth
0:39
and the sound result is significant. I'll give you a demo of that in just a minute
0:44
But let me start out by saying that they're powered by 6mm dynamic drivers
0:48
and they are true wireless stereo earbuds, and they give you 10 hours per charge on the earbuds
0:56
with a little bit less battery life if you're using the boom mic
0:59
so figure eight to nine hours, but still, I hope you don't have to be on the phone for that long
1:05
It's a long time to be talking to people. Now, it comes with a pretty big charging case
1:11
This is a big whopper of a case. Number one, it's so you have somewhere to store that boom mic, but it also gives you five additional charges
1:21
which means fully charged plus this being fully charged gives you about 55 hours of use
1:27
Again, that's at least two weeks. weeks of time being on the phone or being on a Zoom call or whatever. Obviously this will work
1:35
for any audio input and any audio output. So boom microphone, you can switch on either side. It
1:42
comes with three sizes of ear tips and three sizes of what they call these cush fins. And the
1:51
idea is you wrap that around the outer part and that's supposed to make it even a little
1:55
more comfortable. I didn't find it worked that way, but your mileage may vary
2:00
To charge the case, you use USBC, and it comes with a little USBC to USBC cable
2:07
Always handy to have one of those around, actually. Bluetooth, it's multi-point Bluetooth 5.3, so it's the very latest generation of Bluetooth
2:15
And one of the big changes on Bluetooth 5 is that when you have separate earbuds, they stay in sync
2:23
and they stay paired much more reliably, which is really important because you don't want one dropping out
2:29
Having said that you can use these as a solo earbud So if you want let me just sort of see I think this is the right earbud It really really hard to read which one which But I can just do this and now I can
2:47
work with this and then leave my other year completely free, super easy. And it's Bluetooth paired
2:54
It works with your Android or iPhone. Easy to work with. There's a J-Lab app that offers EQ
3:00
modes and all sorts of stuff. In fact, let's do a demo. So let me go ahead and I'm going to put these in
3:08
And so now I have my Bluetooth paired. I'm going to bring up the recording on my phone because I know
3:14
people like to watch that. And we're going to start by, let's see, let's start in their app. So here's
3:23
the JLab app. And I'll go back. We'll make sure we're connected. And it looks like
3:30
We're good. So I can do things like they have an ENC mode to get rid of background noise when you're recording. If you're in a loud environment, just go ahead and crank that all the way up
3:40
If you don't need that, then I would suggest that you drop it down a little bit, which there we go. It should be a little easier, that's okay
3:48
And then there's different EQ modes. So they have three built in
3:52
And then there's a custom one where you can actually adjust it as you like. I actually put it. I actually
4:00
prefer just using one of their built-in modes, restored to default, and then we can go back here
4:07
So this is the J-Lab's signature EQ, and then touch controls. There's a lot of touch controls
4:15
Here's a cheat sheet to show you just how many different buttons and taps there are
4:20
I have to be honest. What I do is I actually do all the controls on device. I don't use the touch
4:26
sensors on the earbuds. It's just a little frustrating to like double
4:30
tap and then single tap and then do a long hold followed by a short tap all of these
4:35
complex things when all you really need to do is pull out your source device and tap
4:39
next track or something pretty easy to work with not much else that you can
4:46
get to here in the app it's important that you can update your firmware and
4:51
there's also a safe listening limit if you have some issues with hearing or
4:56
you're particularly sensitive to noise and such then that might be something
5:00
important Now let go to voice mode and what you hearing now is you hearing my voice is picked up by the boom mic in the JLab work buds in your headset Now let me go ahead and pull off that boom mic
5:18
And now what you're hearing is you're hearing my voice just picked up by the earbuds
5:23
It's still pretty darn good, but the boom mic makes it just a little bit better, just a little bit clearer
5:30
This is perhaps a little bit more comfortable. This doesn't weigh much of anything, but it's still a little bit extra weight to be putting onto your ears
5:38
I will note that J seineb also has some that have the hook that goes around your ear
5:43
if this feels like or seems like something that's going to be heavy on your ear
5:47
And here's a close-up with the boom mic on. So you can see what that looks like
5:52
I will say right now they're pretty darn comfortable, and I've been wearing them and listening to music and walking around my office and stuff
5:59
No issues at all. No fear that it's going to fall out. I will say, as with all of these devices, take the time to test out different size ear
6:08
I default go to the largest ear tips. It comes with three different sizes
6:13
I mentioned that earlier. So test out the different sizes and mostly what you'll notice is that there's a lot better
6:19
base response once you get ear tips that properly seal your ear c
6:24
So that's something definitely worth tweaking and fiddling with. And speaking to which, let me stop the recording
6:31
And now we're back to the regular microphone. And, you know, these sound sounds like to the sound
6:38
good enough that that wasn't a big deal, right? So that's pretty sweet. And in terms of the
6:43
sound quality, they're not audiophile. They're not great for music or anything, but they're
6:49
entirely listenable. So they don't have a big sound stage, but they have a nice reproduction. And I was
6:56
listening to some jazz, and the jazz sounded really pretty clean. You know, so really nothing
7:01
to complain about. And certainly, if I needed to be poised and ready because I was working at a call
7:07
center or something and I needed to be able to jump onto a call at any moment and I wanted my
7:13
boom mic then this is so easy so much nicer than putting on a headset or having to be wired into
7:19
your device or something and obviously these can pair with a laptop so if you have a chrome book a
7:26
PC a macintosh you could pair these with that use the boom mic for audio input and now you can do like
7:32
a zoom call even as you wander around your house or something obviously you'd probably
7:37
want to turn off the camera or you might have an indoor floating drone that'd be
7:41
pretty cool so suffice to say there a lot to like here these are not glamorous these are not something where people are going to say wow that a really high brand like Seinheiser or something But who cares I mean
7:55
they're really nice. They look nice. They sound really good. I really like the boom mic. I think
8:01
that's really fun. Then you can put them in the charging thing. Let's see if I can get this to work
8:08
Great. And then wrap around. So now I have that one ear button with the boom mic attached
8:15
drop the other one in, put the cover on, and I'm ready to go
8:20
And who would have thought that something this small and portable gives you that higher audio quality from the boom microphone for when you're on calls
8:29
So super convenient, really comfortable, could be great for if you're on the road or something
8:34
Truckers might love this because it's so much more comfortable and so much less sort of, you know, tiring and fatiguing than having a headphone set on
8:44
So that's really just about everything I have for you. We should talk about the price, but before we get there, I'm going to invite you to go ahead and click on that subscribe button and subscribe to my channel
8:55
And then if you found this useful, please go ahead and give me a like or thumbs up
8:59
Really do appreciate when you do that. Cool. Now, this is the J-Lab work buds in-ear headset, and they are $799, currently with a 5% coupon discount
9:14
offering them at 7599 at Amazon.com. Now, if you're just listening, you know, just looking for music or something
9:23
these might not be for you, but if you need to be on the phone, if you need to talk to people and you do that a lot
9:29
whether it's on the phone or Zoom or Teams or Meet or Blue Sky
9:35
whatever, there's a million different programs now, right? If you do that, then this is a game changer
9:41
And mostly the people that are going to thank you, or the people on the other end of the call
9:45
they'll be like, you sound so good. You sound like you're talking into a pro mic
9:50
You heard it. So, you know, that's really the sweet spot for this
9:54
This is a work set. That's why they're called work buds. Pretty logical
9:59
So that's all I got. I think I'm going to go back to some jazz. So I'll have to catch you in my next video
