There are a lot of headphones with good audio playback and plenty of those have active noise cancellation. But getting great audio combined with excellent ANC and smart design, well, that's quite a bit more uncommon. Which is why the Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Traveller Headphones are such a great option.
Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ auditions the Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC Headphones and finds they combine brilliant design and engineering with great audio and two-level ANC. Lots to like, nothing to dislike. Except...

Great sound and great noise cancellation
0:03
Let's check them out. Dave Taylor here, and I'm checking out these
0:15
These are the Biodynamic Lagoon ANC Traveler headphones, and they're terrific. They really sound good
0:22
Now, let's start with some specs. They're circumural headphones with 10 to 30,000 hertz frequency response
0:30
91 decibels sound pressure level and total harmonic distortion of less than 0.02%
0:36
So on all the specs, really nice. Actually listening to them? Really nice
0:42
But we'll get back to that. Has two levels of active noise cancellation
0:46
Now, I'm not exactly sure why you need two levels, but I always just go to the higher level because why not, right
0:53
So I guess the thinking is that maybe that's a little too much and you want to be able to have a better mix of what you can hear from your
0:59
outside environment and what you can hear from your music. So I guess that's ANC level one
1:04
Anyway, supports AAC, supports low latency APTX. So you've got your iPhones and your
1:11
androids all set. If you don't have a phone that has one of those, then might need to
1:15
upgrade. Just saying, has touch pads control. So that's really interesting. One of the earpieces
1:20
is actually a touch panel. So volume up, volume down, next track, previous track, pause, play
1:28
all those sort of things, super easy to work with. And what also makes this cool is it comes with something called Mosaic sound personalization
1:36
and that is done through an app. So let me give you a quick demo of a couple of things on the app
1:43
or show you a couple of screens probably more accurate. So it's the MIY app, and here's the personalized
1:48
I've already done, there's like a sound test you do, and it adjusts the music, and what it reproduces based on your actual hearing
1:56
So that's really cool. There's also a nice tutorial on all the different touch sequences you can use here
2:03
And finally, there's some other settings in the headphones that you can access from the app that I don't even know my headphone had those sort of settings, but it's pretty cool
2:11
And it does actually talk to you. So like when you turn it on when you connect you can hear like Bluetooth enabled AAC enabled you know all that sort of stuff connected And so you know having that in your language obviously is beneficial It very nice sound I wish Siri sounded a little more like that
2:30
And I don't know why Siri keeps turning on my phone. I'm probably actually engaging it through the headphones, which is a little confusing
2:37
Anyway, so then let's talk about battery life because this is some crazy good battery life for something that's so light
2:44
It has 45 hours of playback time. if you don't use active noise cancellation
2:50
If you do use ANC, either level one or level two, there's more circuitry, there's more going on
2:56
Still lasts 24 hours without another charge. Pretty sweet. Now, charges via USBC, and I should show you
3:04
comes with a hard case. Personally, not a huge fan of hard cases
3:08
but this one at least is a little bit smaller than most of them. And it comes with the two cables, right
3:13
So, number one, you have your USBC charging cable. obviously important. And then the other one, which I also really appreciate, is just a 3.5
3:23
millimeter adapter, and it's the same on both ends. Well done buyer dynamics. Some companies
3:29
seem to want to have a custom cable with an even thinner connector on the headphone side
3:34
and that just means like you're stuck having to buy their cable. There's no reason for that
3:38
So this, 3.5 millimeter on one side, you plug it in, you plug it into your device, you're good to go
3:44
And so you can see, I'm actually getting a really bad transcript of all this from Siri
3:51
I'm absolutely no idea why that's happening. But it's interesting, at least
3:56
So the battery life is just crazy good with these. And let me just give you a quick tour
4:02
So on the left ear, there's nothing. It's just nice, simple. But the right ear is really where everything's happening
4:09
So on the outside, you have that touchscreen. And then you have controls for active
4:14
noise cancellation or ANC, and then you have the on-off and Bluetooth pairing
4:20
And I got to give them huge credit because if you turn the headphones off, it turns off
4:24
the ANC. A lot of headphone designers don't do that, and it's really annoying because you have to
4:30
remember to turn off the ANC or next time you pick up your headphones, they're dead
4:34
So huge props for doing that. It's just like one of the many smart design features
4:40
So then number three you have actually the 3 millimeter jack so you can plug this in and use this as wired headphones And then finally you have a USBC connection which is for charging
4:51
Now, it also features a microphone, and there's actually tiny microphone holes on both sides
4:57
So you can use this for phone calls. I really can't stand doing phone calls with headphones on
5:02
I like to have more ambient noise around me when I'm on a phone call. I don't know
5:06
It's partly, I guess, how I hear my own voice when I'm talking
5:10
but that might be something you like. And I will say, they sound good
5:15
You know, your phone calls are going to sound really high quality. If only they were HD phone calls
5:20
But that's a whole other conversation. Pretty interesting and complicated one. Now, one of the other cool things that they're doing with the Lagoon headphones here is
5:29
I don't know if you can see, but there's a light inside. And so they're using these lights
5:34
There you go. Can you see that? So they're using these lights as cues for things like your battery life
5:41
So, yes, when you turn it on, it will tell you your battery life, but you can also take them off and have a quick peek at these lights
5:48
And no one else knows what's going on. There's no status lights. There's nothing if you want to use these in a dark room
5:53
There's not going to be this like little tiny pinpoint of red or white light or anything
5:58
Really, again, a nice design. Which brings us to the sound. And I just want to say these sound fans
6:06
They really sound good. There's a clarity to the sound that really makes listening really enjoyable, whether you're
6:13
listening to jazz or techno or industrial or classical music. It's just a nice preciseness to the headphones
6:23
Lots of bass. The highs are really nice and defined without being too bright
6:28
And what I mean by bright is sometimes you get the highs where it's, you know, you turn
6:32
the volume up and you sort of cringe a little bit because they're like, they hurt your ears
6:36
They're just too bright. And then finally, the sound stage, and that's the sort of sense of spatial or space that you have out of your music, is terrific
6:45
These are the kind of headphones that you listen to, and then you say, hmm, now what music's designed for headphones
6:51
What music's going to give me a really expansive experience? These will do a great job reproducing them
6:58
I am already a big fan of Bayer Dynamic, and I think they've really done a great job with these Lagoon
7:03
I love the ANC They work really well in loud environments I can wait to try them on an airplane especially with that battery life If I on the airplane for more than 24 hours then I think
7:15
we've actually circumnavigated the entire earth and I'm going to land where I took off from
7:19
which would be the stupidest flight ever and really exhausting. But, you know, super long battery life
7:25
really good ANC, beautiful music reproduction. If they happen to die, then I can use my little
7:31
wire and I can plug it into my device is a win all around now before we get to the price let me ask
7:37
if you can subscribe to my channel really appreciate when you do that and let me know leave a comment
7:43
if you are flying a lot or on the train or in other noisy environments a lot what are you using
7:48
for your noise cancellation let me leave a comment let me know what kind of headphones you're using
7:52
and whether you think they're better than these biodynamics they might not be just for the record
7:58
okay now let's get to the price because they are not the most of the inexpensive in the world. The biodynamic lagoon ANC, the traveler is the black version, and the
8:09
Explorer is the brown version. I actually prefer the black one, and they are both $399 at
8:16
Amazon.com. I can only say I am a big fan, and I think these have become my go-to headphones
8:22
and, you know, things like low latency. Obviously it's designed for low latency, APTX. These are
8:29
great if you want to listen to like the audio off of a video off of mine, perhaps YouTube
8:34
channel or something. You know, really, there's everything to like and nothing to dislike about these except maybe
8:41
this hard box. You know, I have a feeling that because they fold up so neatly, these are the kind of things
8:47
I might just put in a drawstring bag or something. It seems like a better way to transport them if they're already in a safe environment
8:52
in my computer bag or a backpack or suitcase or something. But if you like hard cases, you got a hard case
8:59
So all the way around, a win, definitely worth checking out. This is Dave Taylor

I am going back to my music, and I will catch you in my next video
