hey everybody Pastor Randy here Welcome
0:02
to Making It Simple Great to be with you
0:04
today We're going to wrap up seeking an
0:07
understanding I've been a little
0:08
sporadic lately with being able to
0:10
record simply just uh my plate is
0:13
probably as full as it's ever been in my
0:16
life right now with just a multitude of
0:18
things Not going to uh just pour all
0:21
that out there for you I'm just glad to
0:23
be with you today as we continue in this
0:25
study and then we'll uh we'll be picking
0:27
back up on a brand new one on Monday But
0:30
we're going to wrap up seeking and
0:32
understanding We've been particularly
0:33
looking at Proverbs chapter 2 and just
0:36
the first little section of verses
0:37
because there's so much um wisdom there
0:40
which Proverbs of course is the book of
0:42
wisdom But I just want to jump back into
0:44
the lesson We've been talking about
0:46
discernment What does that mean how how
0:50
is it imperative not just important
0:53
imperative to our lives I want to I want
0:56
to jump back where we were We left off
0:58
in verse
0:59
seven and it just simply says he stores
1:02
up success for the upright He is a
1:04
shield to those who live with integrity
1:06
And so that's where we are So that we
1:08
find that shield Okay So that is a
1:10
protector That is uh one that is
1:13
watching over us And as I said in the
1:15
last lesson not not one that is going to
1:18
prevent the issue but going to protect
1:21
you from the long-term damage of that
1:23
But I want us to see what is the what is
1:26
the results where where does this and
1:28
why how does it get there verse eight So
1:32
now let's now let's look at that word
1:35
The verse seven is ending He is a shield
1:37
to those who live with
1:39
integrity That's a statement of fact
1:44
But why and verse eight gives you the
1:47
answer
1:48
So that he may guard the paths of
1:51
justice and protect the way of his
1:55
faithful
1:58
followers May guard so that he may guard
2:04
The word may there is very important
2:06
because that that is uh that is the
2:08
opportunity for choice That is the
2:11
opportunity for opportunity In other
2:16
words he may
2:20
guard What that really comes down to
2:23
bottom line is if we let him If we let
2:29
him In other words the offer is on the
2:32
table
2:34
It says he is our shield so that he may
2:38
guard the paths of justice and protect
2:40
the way of his faithful
2:43
followers We've been calling this lesson
2:45
seeking and
2:48
understanding When we when we grasp the
2:52
idea the understanding that seeking is
2:54
an action word that requires action from
2:59
who me the one that has been given the
3:02
task of seeking That's all of us right
3:05
and so if we if we grasp that then we
3:09
understand the action component of the
3:12
word seek requires the willingness to
3:19
look which builds within us prayerfully
3:22
the
3:24
desire to know more That's really what
3:28
it comes down to friends See the things
3:30
of God cannot be surface level stuff Now
3:33
when I say that I am not speaking of
3:36
deep
3:37
theology that's where we get in trouble
3:40
We really do because so many people are
3:44
trying to have
3:46
a a deeper
3:48
intellectual conversation of saying
3:51
"Well I know what this word means and I
3:53
know what the origin of the and and that
3:56
conversation is okay fine There's
3:58
circles that we can do that but what
4:01
does it mean to you what does it mean to
4:05
me?" That's where discernment is so
4:07
important Because when it's personal we
4:10
begin to see things differently We're
4:12
not looking again from the intellectual
4:16
deep
4:17
theological And I'm not saying that
4:19
those things are bad don't get me
4:21
wrong But oftent times those things are
4:24
deterrence to the relationship
4:27
because those things are
4:30
confusing Those words are big Those
4:33
words are hard to pronounce
4:36
What does it mean you know it's like
4:38
going to the doctor and they give you a
4:41
word that's 10 feet long that they can't
4:45
even pronounce and you're sitting there
4:48
saying
4:49
"Well what does that mean?" Well it
4:52
means your big toe is hurt Well just
4:54
tell me that I don't need all that other
4:56
stuff Just tell me that This is what a
5:00
relationship is with God What does it
5:02
mean to me that's where discernment
5:04
comes in In other words when we embrace
5:07
his
5:09
truth his truth rather than the world's
5:13
truth Jesus would say this in the New
5:16
Testament He said in John chapter 14
5:18
"Peace I leave with you My peace I give
5:22
you It's ours if we want
5:25
it." Clear answers not confusion because
5:29
God is not the author of chaos Not
5:32
things that leave your head
5:34
scratching but clear concise An apple is
5:38
an apple A dog is a dog The sky is a the
5:42
blue What all those very very simple
5:44
things He says "My peace I give you I do
5:50
not give you as the world gives you."
5:53
What is he speaking of there temporary
5:55
and dishonest That's really what it
5:59
means because that's what we find every
6:02
day from the world's answers that we
6:06
receive And if we only seek the world's
6:09
answers that is what we get a temporary
6:12
answer In other words there is no
6:13
eternal value in
6:15
that And oftentimes it's not true He
6:19
says "Do not let your heart be troubled
6:21
or
6:23
fearful." He's saying "Trust me Trust me
6:27
trust faith relationship This is all of
6:30
those things placed into action So as we
6:34
wrap this up I want you to think about
6:37
this
6:39
discernment It's not just what
6:41
discernment
6:43
is but why is it
6:46
needed why is that level of
6:49
understanding and knowledge why is that
6:51
needed to navigate this journey that we
6:54
call life we have to first determine
6:56
what am I looking for and again we've
6:59
gone down that road in all of these
7:02
lessons What am I looking for we have to
7:04
conclude that first because it says
7:06
"Seek and you will find." What am I
7:09
looking for what am I seeking
7:11
after what am I looking
7:15
for but then what am I going to do with
7:18
it when I find it that's the That's the
7:21
other half of the question How does
7:24
application change things i've
7:26
discovered the whatever you know and we
7:29
could go down all kinds of roads but
7:31
what are you going to do with it i've
7:34
discovered and understood the relational
7:36
value of what it means to know God
7:39
That's what I can say And I can say that
7:41
with with pretty strong authority Uh not
7:45
because I'm an expert but because I
7:46
understand what it means to me And
7:48
that's why I teach in the manner that I
7:50
teach because it it is a it is a passion
7:53
and and so once I found that what does
7:56
it mean then how does the application
7:58
change it changes my entire level of
8:00
teaching and the ability to teach and it
8:02
entires my it changes my ability to
8:04
connect to people in a very very real
8:07
way So when we implement a plan what
8:09
happens well let's look at the rest of
8:11
these verses As he says in verse 9
8:16
then then that word alone expresses a
8:21
result So this is what's happened as a
8:24
result of what has been implemented
8:26
prior to this Then you will understand I
8:32
love that I love that He said "Then you
8:34
will understand
8:36
righteousness justice and
8:39
integrity." Every good path In other
8:42
words it'll be
8:44
clear The clouds of doubt have been
8:47
lifted The ability to be tricked and
8:50
deceived is greatly
8:53
lessened Why how did that become the
8:56
result let's look at the last two parts
8:58
of this verse that we're studying Verse
9:01
10 and 11
9:03
For wisdom will then
9:07
enter your heart Now that's important
9:11
Not your mind but your heart Because our
9:14
heart is our center of emotion There is
9:16
where things dwell and begin to process
9:20
Okay for wisdom will enter your heart
9:22
and knowledge will delight you You'll be
9:24
glad that you
9:26
know Sometimes we've heard sayings like
9:29
the truth hurts or the truth is hard Yes
9:32
But is it better to know the truth
9:34
absolutely Because then there's no
9:36
deception He says "For wisdom will learn
9:38
your heart and knowledge will delight
9:40
you Discretion will watch over you and
9:42
understanding will guard
9:45
you."
9:47
Wisdom the knowledge that has been
9:50
obtained is now being
9:52
applied Scripture here says it will
9:54
enter your hearts and knowledge will
9:56
delight you Again it's good to know I
10:00
remember when we were kids taking tests
10:02
It was good to know the answer Not only
10:04
because you were going to get a better
10:05
grade on the paper but you had a feeling
10:07
of confidence when you could write it
10:09
down and you knew that it was right When
10:12
we understand the things of God and not
10:14
that we understand all the things of God
10:15
but when we understand the things of God
10:17
as he needs us to understand it changes
10:20
everything because
10:23
then then we can help ourselves which
10:26
allows us to help others
10:31
The writer says "Discretion will watch
10:33
over you and understanding will guard
10:35
you." When we know the truth Jesus made
10:38
that clear He said "The truth will set
10:40
you
10:42
free." Some versions say "The truth will
10:44
make you free." I actually like that
10:47
word better simply because it's a choice
10:50
You can be free if you want to You do
10:52
not have to be bound by anything because
10:55
we live in a world of great confusion We
10:59
live in a world of utter chaos at
11:02
times But
11:04
knowing about and knowing are two very
11:08
very different things See knowing how to
11:11
swim having that knowledge it could keep
11:15
you from
11:17
drowning Applying that
11:19
knowledge will keep you alive
11:23
knowing and understanding the difference
11:24
between worldly wisdom and godly
11:28
wisdom It can be the it can be the
11:31
absolute clear difference between living
11:35
and merely existing See many people know
11:39
about
11:41
God But so few have the desire to seek
11:44
after and understand exactly who is God
11:49
Why does discernment matter what is it
11:51
seeking and understanding Why does it
11:55
matter because God loves you God loves
11:59
you and he wants to see you free He
12:02
never wants to see you in bondage to
12:05
anything or anyone that is going to keep
12:08
you away from him
12:11
Seek and you will find As the song would
12:15
once say "Open the eyes of my heart Lord
12:19
I need to see you God bless you friends
12:23
I hope you have an awesome day Lord
12:25
willing we'll be back here Monday with a
