Hi, this is Anita with Five Minutes with
0:10
Art. You know, art throughout the
0:11
centuries is really was very much a
0:15
um type of profession. But yet, there
0:18
are some women artists who really helped
0:20
change the world. And today I want to
0:22
talk about some of those women artists
0:24
who many of them are sort of unsung
0:26
heroes or heroins because they help
0:29
change the world. One is Lavina Fontana.
0:34
She was u she lived from 1552 to 1614.
0:39
She was one of the first women in
0:40
Western Europe to manage her workshop
0:43
and support a family through
0:44
commissions. This would have been huge
0:46
during this time. Remember, she lived in
0:49
the 1500s and the 1600s. So, she was
0:52
able to actually support a family. It
0:54
was an era when women weren't allowed to
0:56
be professional painters. She carved out
0:59
a career for herself in Italy. She broke
1:02
the professional boundaries that had not
1:05
been broken before. So, she's really
1:07
somebody that we need to um talk about
1:10
and recognize as a great woman artist.
1:13
Another woman that should be mentioned
1:14
is Judith Lice Tier. She was a star of
1:18
the Dutch Golden Age. Listier ran her
1:21
own studio and was one of the first
1:23
women admitted to the Harlem Painters
1:26
Guild. For centuries, her work was
1:28
misattributed to male artists. She
1:31
actually lived from6009 to 1660. So this
1:35
is a woman that again who also fought
1:37
against the male domination during her
1:39
time and even for centuries her work was
1:42
thought to be the work of a male um
1:44
artist when it was really her work. She
1:46
mastered painting and she fought for
1:49
creative ownership in this very
1:51
patriarchal system that she was in.
1:54
Another woman was Joseph de Obidos. She
1:59
lived from 1630 to 1684. She was a
2:03
Portuguese Baroque painter known for
2:05
still lives and religious im imagery.
2:08
She was one of the few women recognized
2:09
in her time as a professional artist in
2:12
Catholic Europe. You know one reason why
2:14
she matters is she had great success in
2:16
the conservative religious Portugal. It
2:21
you know during that time and also her
2:23
use of light and realism rivals her male
2:26
count contemporaries. So she was not
2:28
only, you know, breaking through the the
2:31
patriarchal system that was going on
2:33
there, but she also was someone who had
2:36
a huge amount of talent. Another woman
2:39
who's on my list that most people don't
2:41
know about is a woman named Pan Yu
2:44
Leang. She was lived from 1895 to 1977.
2:50
She was a former sex worker turned
2:52
modernist painter. She fused, you know,
2:55
western techniques with Chinese
2:56
subjects, you know, changing the
2:59
aesthetics of the 20th century Chinese
3:02
art. She fought stigma and exile to
3:04
become one of the modern China's most
3:06
important artists. And that's why I kind
3:08
of, you know, put her into this list. I
3:10
love her for the type of work that she
3:12
did and how she really fought against
3:13
stereotypes during her time. Another one
3:16
of my favorite artists is Hilma Alfint
3:19
which is a Swedish artist which isn't
3:21
really wellnown um but she really is a
3:24
very important artist. She was long
3:26
before Kadinsky and Helma Alf Clint was
3:29
painting abstract works of art inspired
3:31
by spirituality, you know, mysticism.
3:35
She, you know, paintings of swirling
3:37
canvases and she is really an
3:39
interesting character because when she
3:41
died, she lived from 1862
3:45
to 1944. She had written in her will
3:47
that for like 20 years her paintings
3:49
need to be kept um secret and they were
3:52
until one of her relatives you know
3:54
discovered them and you know like in the
3:56
60s or so and then they discovered these
3:58
massive beautiful works of modern art
4:01
that nobody even knew existed. You know
4:03
she matters because she's literally
4:05
changed the timeline of modern art where
4:07
her recognition now forces a rewrite of
4:10
art history and she has some beautiful
4:13
massive works. What's also interesting
4:15
about her, she painted traditional
4:16
things to earn a living, but she kept
4:19
these type of works of art sort of more
4:20
hidden because she felt like people
4:22
didn't understand them. So, she really
4:25
is a woman artist who changed the time.
4:28
Another artist is Amriita Sheer Gil. She
4:31
was lived from 1913 to 1941. She
4:35
sometimes called India's you know Freda
4:38
Ko and she blended European techniques
4:41
with Indian themes creating a unique
4:43
visual language and you know she really
4:46
has some wonderful works of art with of
4:48
Indian women and um you know other other
4:51
subjects. She gave voice to Indian
4:54
modernism and bridge the east west
4:57
divide in the colonized world.
5:00
I have um I have several more other
5:02
women that are on here, maybe some of
5:04
them that you do not know that um you
5:07
can go on and you can we'll put a link
5:08
in the description to our blog post on
5:10
10 women artists who changed art history
5:13
but you've never heard of and that you
5:15
can discover some of these great women
5:17
who really were trailblazers who changed
5:21
art and art history and many profound
5:24
ways. So, these are women that most
5:26
people don't know about or maybe you've
5:28
heard about them, but you don't really
5:29
maybe you don't really know that much
5:31
about them. But these are some fabulous
5:34
women artists who changed art or changed
5:36
art in their communities in very
5:39
important ways. This is Anita from Five
