0:12
Good morning, folks. This is Pastor Don
0:15
Golden from Calvary Ministries. Uh, as
0:19
always, it's just an absolute blessing
0:23
and a pleasure to be here with you to
0:26
share the word of God and the things
0:29
that we learn from them, the things that
0:33
can fall into our minds and into our
0:37
thoughts and into our daily lives so
0:40
that God moves within us and through us
0:45
all the time. That's our ambition that
0:49
we become so centered on the word of God
0:53
and that we become so filled with the
0:56
word of God that it literally makes us a
1:00
vessel to carry forth the riches of the
1:04
word of God and share them with all
1:07
those who have an ear to hear. We have
1:12
uh been doing a series of sermons and
1:16
teachings from what we would call the
1:19
Old Testament. We finished a series of
1:22
four in Moses. This will be the second
1:26
one in Joshua who was the successor of
1:31
Moses. And we are going to deal today
1:35
with that period in history and the
1:39
leadership of Joshua
1:42
where the people of Israel, this new
1:48
united confederacy of the Hebrew people,
1:52
12 tribes that are going to be called
1:55
Israel. And this message today is based
2:00
on that time when they are preparing to
2:04
move across the Jordan and into the
2:08
promised land, the land flowing with
2:11
milk and honey that God has promised
2:14
them. You know, when I think of that, a
2:18
land flowing with milk and honey. I
2:21
think that these people came out of the
2:23
Cyani Peninsula. And yes, there were
2:26
those oasis
2:29
uh areas within their travel where they
2:33
would stop and they would water and they
2:35
would rest and they would be in the
2:37
shade, but most of their journey was
2:41
through the desolateness
2:44
of that Cyani Peninsula. And so when
2:48
they talked about a land flowing with
2:50
milk and honey, oh my word, it was
2:53
something that most of the generation
2:56
that was getting ready to go into
2:59
Canaan, something that they had never
3:03
seen, something that they could not
3:06
imagine.
3:07
And then I thought about our own
3:10
country, the country we live in, this
3:14
wonderful place called the United States
3:17
of America,
3:20
a unified organization of peoples from
3:24
all over the world who come together and
3:28
we live with a standard of affluence
3:34
that most of the world can only imagine.
3:39
I think of the the ease with which my
3:42
wife goes into the grocery stores and
3:46
she buys from shelves that are packed
3:50
full of all types of sometimes things
3:54
that I cannot fathom products of all
3:58
types. You know, if you go and look, my
4:01
grandchildren
4:02
like to eat cereals oftentimes for
4:06
breakfast. Go sometimes into that aisle
4:10
that's dedicated to cereal and look at
4:14
the number of cereals that are there,
4:18
options for our children to choose from,
4:22
to have for breakfast. Most of the world
4:25
doesn't live with that. of fluence and
4:29
that abundance. There's a show on TV
4:33
about uh cooking challenges.
4:37
And the MC of the show, who is a chef of
4:41
some sorts himself, takes these people
4:45
that are competing, these chefs that are
4:47
competing into a grocery store filled
4:51
with everything you can imagine to go
4:54
ahead and cook meals that I can't even
4:57
pronounce.
4:58
But the affluence that we live in truly
5:02
America,
5:04
America, the United States of America is
5:08
a land flowing with milk and honey.
5:15
Back to where we want to take the lesson
5:17
today and the sermon today. Go with me
5:21
to the book of Joshua, chapter 3.
5:26
Now Joshua is now the leader of the
5:30
Hebrew people, the Israelites. He is the
5:34
leader of this new nation called Israel.
5:39
And they have traveled all the way from
5:41
the land of Gan in Egypt for 40 years
5:47
through the Cyani Peninsula. They have
5:50
battled enemies along the way and they
5:54
have been victorious every time. And now
5:58
they are located in what the Bible calls
6:02
the Acacia Grove. Apparently a large
6:05
large wooden area that was just opposite
6:10
on Jericho on the east shore of the
6:14
Jordan River.
6:16
It says there, we'll begin in chapter
6:19
three. It says there that then Joshua
6:24
rose early in the morning
6:27
and they set out from the acacia grove,
6:30
this place where they were encamped, and
6:34
came to the Jordan, he and all the
6:37
children of Israel, and they lodged
6:40
there before they crossed over.
6:47
Go to verse five.
6:50
And then Joshua said to the people,
6:54
"Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the
6:58
Lord will do wonders among you.
7:02
Sanctify. Make yourselves holy as the
7:06
Lord is holy. Put aside your sins. Put
7:10
aside everything that would cause you to
7:14
be distracted from what the Lord thy God
7:18
has set before you to do. I'm reminded
7:22
of that verse earlier
7:25
in Joshua
7:27
where God tells Joshua, he says, "Do not
7:32
turn to the right or do not turn to the
7:37
left. Do not go anywhere except straight
7:41
toward the Lord, and your life shall
7:46
prosper.
7:48
Be not afraid nor be dismayed, for the
7:52
Lord your God is with you wherever you
7:57
go. These people make themselves holy,
8:01
commit themselves to that. If you look
8:04
in Psalm 77
8:06
and verses 11 to 14, you hear these same
8:11
words in a different way.
8:15
God says to the people of Israel there,
8:20
I will meditate
8:23
on all your work and talk of your deeds.
8:28
Your way, oh God, is in the sanctuary.
8:32
that place which is holy. And who is so
8:36
great a God as our God? You are the God
8:40
who does wonders. Truly, as they thought
8:44
about all these times that they had
8:46
wandered in the wilderness and God had
8:49
provided not only for the generation
8:52
that came out of Israel, but for this
8:55
new generation that was now getting
8:58
ready to cross into the promised land.
9:01
Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow the
9:05
Lord will do wonders among you. Isn't
9:09
that what it said here in Psalm 77?
9:12
You are the God who does wonders. You
9:17
are the God who does wonders. Turn with
9:20
me now to Psalm 136.
9:23
Psalm 136.
9:26
And this psalm
9:30
deals with in God's enduring mercy.
9:35
And it says here in Psalm 136, listen to
9:39
these words. And would these words have
9:42
rang then as they do today? Oh, give
9:46
thanks to the Lord for he is good. For
9:51
his mercy endures forever.
9:55
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords,
9:58
for his mercy endures forever. What a
10:02
song to sing. Verse four. What are we
10:05
talking about? Wonders. To him alone
10:09
does great wonders for his mercy endures
10:15
forever.
10:18
And then it goes through and it talks
10:20
about what God has done. The great
10:23
wonders that led to their being able to
10:26
leave Egypt. the great wonders that God
10:29
did to provide for them as they defeated
10:33
the Amalachites, as they defeated the
10:36
Bashionites, as they defeated the
10:38
Amorites, how the army of Egypt was
10:42
completely destroyed.
10:46
And it closes there by saying,
10:49
"For his mercy endures forever."
10:54
the people say, "Who remembered us in
10:58
our lowly state, for his mercy endures
11:03
forever,
11:05
and rescued us from our enemies,
11:09
for his mercy endures forever.
11:14
Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven
11:19
for his mercy endures for me for
11:24
forever.
11:27
Happy is the one
11:29
who repays you have you as you have
11:32
saved us. Happy is the one who takes and
11:36
dashes
11:38
those that were wrong against the rock.
11:42
Do not forsake
11:44
the works works of the Lord.
11:48
Continuing on says here in verse six,
11:52
then Joshua spoke to the priests saying,
11:56
"Take up the ark of the covenant." Now
11:58
remember they're getting ready to go
12:01
across the Jordan and they are going to
12:04
advance on the city of Jericho. You
12:08
remember that Joshua sent out the spies.
12:11
They came back with a report saying that
12:13
victory was surely going to be theirs.
12:16
And now Joshua is talking to the
12:20
priests. And he says, "Then Joshua spoke
12:23
to the priests saying, take up the ark
12:27
of the covenant and cross over before
12:29
the people."
12:32
So the priests, they took the ark.
12:34
Remember the ark is the symbol of the
12:37
very presence of God among the people.
12:42
So they took up the ark of the covenant
12:44
and they went before the people.
12:49
And Joshua said to them down to verse
12:52
10. By this you shall know that the
12:56
living God is among you,
12:59
and that he will without fail drive out
13:03
from before you the Canaanites, and the
13:06
Hittites, and the Heivites, and the
13:09
Parizzites, and the Gegosites, and the
13:12
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
13:16
And it shall come to pass down verse 13,
13:20
as soon as the souls of the feet of the
13:25
priests who bear the ark of the Lord,
13:28
the very presence of the Lord with the
13:31
people, the Lord of all the earth, shall
13:35
rest in the waters of the Jordan, that
13:38
the waters of the Jordan shall be cut
13:41
off the waters that came down from
13:44
upstream, and they shall shall stand as
13:47
a heap.
13:49
Go with me to the book of Daniel.
13:52
Go with me to the book of Daniel
13:55
and chapter
13:58
6 and verses 25 27
14:04
it says therefor
14:07
he is the living God
14:12
and steadfast forever. His kingdom, God,
14:18
this living God, his kingdom is the one
14:21
which shall not be destroyed. And his
14:24
dominion shall endure to the end. He
14:29
delivers and rescues, and he works signs
14:33
and wonders in heaven and in earth.
14:38
Isn't this what we're looking for? Going
14:41
back there to verse five, the wonders
14:44
that only God can do.
14:47
They're getting ready to cross the
14:49
Jordan River.
14:52
And the Bible says that as soon as the
14:56
souls of the feet of the priests bearing
15:01
the ark of the covenant touched into the
15:06
water that the waters of the Jordan
15:09
River were pushed back. The waters of
15:12
the Jordan River were pushed back, and
15:16
the people crossed on dry land. Verse
15:22
16, that the waters which came down from
15:26
upstream stood still, and rose up in a
15:30
heap very far away.
15:34
The same thing that happened in the Red
15:36
Sea to the generation that left Egypt,
15:41
that left out of the land of Gan and
15:44
went to worship the Lord their God. When
15:47
they got to the Red Sea, they were faced
15:50
with the seemingly impossible barrier of
15:54
the Red Sea on their east and a nor army
15:58
from the North Egyptian army, the
16:01
largest army on the face of the earth at
16:04
that time, the most powerful on the face
16:07
of the earth at that time. They were
16:09
caught between the two. And what were
16:13
they to do? God commanded. Moses
16:17
stretched out his rod and the waters of
16:20
the Red Sea parted. The Bible says, "And
16:23
the people crossed on dry land." Here
16:27
again, they're at the Jordan River and
16:31
they have left for the Acacia Grove and
16:34
they're getting ready to go across the
16:36
Jordan to advance on the city of
16:40
Jericho.
16:42
And God has the waters. As soon as the
16:47
presence of God, the ark that the
16:50
priests are carrying, as soon as they
16:54
step into the water, the river backs up
16:58
and stands up. Stands up and the people
17:03
are able to cross.
17:06
Verse 17. Then the priests who bore the
17:09
ark of the covenant of the Lord stood
17:12
firm on dry go ground in the midst of
17:17
the Jordan. Now this is the same Jordan
17:20
where many lessons down we will find
17:23
John the Baptist going into this same
17:26
location
17:28
to preach a baptism of repentance. Here
17:31
the people are going through on dry land
17:34
with the water in a heap to their north.
17:39
And it says all Israel crossed over on
17:43
dry ground until all the people had
17:47
crossed completely over the Jordan.
17:54
And so it was. Let's advance now
17:58
to chapter five of Joshua.
18:02
And so it was when all the kings of the
18:05
Amorites who were on the west side of
18:08
the Jordan. Now remember the Israelites
18:11
were on the east side and they had just
18:14
passed over
18:17
these kings who lived on the west side
18:20
of the Jordan in Canaan.
18:24
Here's what they do. And so it was when
18:26
all the kings of the Amorites who were
18:29
on the west side of the Jordan and all
18:32
the kings of the Canaanites who were by
18:35
the sea heard of the Lord that had dried
18:38
up the waters of the Jordan from before
18:41
the children of Israel until all had
18:45
crossed over that their hearts melted
18:48
away
18:49
and there was no spirit in them any
18:53
longer because of the children of
18:55
Israel. Now, what happened? Their
18:58
strength melted away because the spirit
19:02
that was in them was a false spirit. It
19:05
was not the spirit of the living God who
19:09
crossed with the children of Israel.
19:13
and their spirit melted away and they
19:16
stood there in fear of Israel that had
19:20
just crossed
19:26
and it says continuing on.
19:30
It says it continues on there talking
19:33
about the great things God has done.
19:37
And it says now going to chapter six
19:41
now Jericho remember Jericho is their
19:44
objective
19:46
the first city that they that Joshua is
19:49
going to advance on. Remember the good
19:52
report he got from the two spies he set
19:54
out. Remember the faith of Rahab who
19:57
helped the two spies.
20:01
It says in chapter 6 and verse one, all
20:05
the kings that were there gathered into
20:08
Jericho. And it says, "Now Jericho was
20:11
securely shut up because of the children
20:14
of Israel. None went out and none went
20:17
in." Now, let me mention something about
20:20
Jericho. Jericho is one of the oldest
20:23
cities that archaeology can find in all
20:27
the world. It's about somewhere between
20:31
8 and 9,000 years old since its
20:34
beginning. This city was well
20:37
established, but it was a pagan city. It
20:41
was filled with idolatry and it was
20:44
filled with those things that were
20:47
shameful and sinful before the Lord. And
20:52
so God was going to deliver this that
20:56
the people of the land of Canaan saw as
20:59
an impregnable
21:01
obstacle to any enemy. For it had stood
21:04
for 8 to 9,000 years. It had been in
21:08
existence for 6,000 years at the time
21:13
that the Israelites march on it.
21:17
And of course the kings there were
21:19
expecting a big battle. But listen to
21:21
what God tells the people to do. He says
21:25
to Joshua, he says to Joshua in verse
21:29
three, "You shall march around the city,
21:33
all you men of war, and you shall all go
21:37
around the city once. This shall you do
21:42
six days." Six days.
21:49
and seven priests shall bear seven
21:51
trumpets of ram's horns before the ark.
21:55
But the seventh day you shall march
21:57
around the city seven times, and the
22:01
priest shall blow the trumpets. And it
22:04
shall come to pass when they make a long
22:07
blast with the ram's horn, the chauffars
22:11
that they have, and when you hear the
22:13
sound of the trumpet, that all the
22:16
people shall shout with a great shout.
22:19
Then the wall of the city will fall down
22:22
flat, and the people shall go up, every
22:26
man straight before him.
22:30
And so the people do exactly as Joshua
22:33
has said.
22:35
The people do exactly as Joshua has
22:38
said. And so on the seventh time on the
22:43
seventh day and the seven times around
22:46
when the priests blow the temples blow
22:49
the trumpets seven times. It says that
22:53
the people shouted when the priests blew
22:56
the trumpets. And it happened when the
22:59
people heard the sound of the trumpets,
23:02
and the people shouted with a great
23:04
shout,
23:06
that the wall fell down flat. Then the
23:10
people went up into the city, every man
23:14
straight before him, and they took the
23:18
city.
23:21
But Joshua down in verse 22, now God
23:24
never forgets a promise. God will never
23:27
leave you. God will never forsake you.
23:30
God will never abandon you nor leave you
23:33
alone.
23:36
It says in verse 22, "But Joshua said to
23:40
the two men who had spied out the
23:42
country, go into the harlot's house,
23:45
remember Rahab, and from there bring out
23:48
the woman and all that she has as you
23:52
swore to her." And Joshua spared Rahab
23:56
the harlot, her father's household, and
23:59
all that she had so that she dwells in
24:02
Israel to this day because she hid the
24:06
messengers whom Joshua sent. Remember
24:09
Harlot, she provided shelter. And if we
24:14
go to the book of Hebrews, she is
24:17
mentioned again in the book of Hebrews
24:21
and it says of her and Joshua there by
24:26
faith chap verse 30 of chapter 11 of
24:29
Hebrews. By faith the walls of Jericho
24:33
fell down after they were encircled for
24:37
seven days. What about Rahab? By faith
24:40
the harlot Rahab did not perish with
24:43
those who did not believe when she
24:46
received the spies with peace. Now you
24:51
say what about this Rahab and what about
24:54
that? Well in the book of Matthew
24:56
chapter one Rahab is married and is in
25:00
the lineage leading to Jesus the Christ
25:03
the son of the living God. She marries a
25:07
man named Salman. I believe he was
25:09
probably one of the two spies that went
25:12
in there and was maintained. But they
25:16
get married and they have a son and that
25:18
son has a son and generations go on down
25:21
until the time of Jesse and the coming
25:24
of the king of Israel named David and
25:27
from there forward the lineage of the
25:30
Christ. So this one named Rahab
25:34
is a symbol of the mercy of God and the
25:38
salvation that God imparts to any of us
25:43
freely. God imparts to any of us free
25:48
freely.
25:49
So what do we learn from this today?
25:53
We learn simply that God
25:57
God is good. His mercy endures forever.
26:03
Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven for
26:06
his mercy endures forever.
26:12
Who gives to all freely
26:16
the pardon and forgiveness of sins.
26:21
To one who gives to all of us redemption
26:24
from our sins.
26:27
And what is required of you
26:31
but to simply go to God and say,
26:35
"Almighty God, I know that I am a sinner
26:39
and I cannot deal with this spiritual
26:43
sin on my own. I must come to you,
26:47
the father of salvation."
26:51
And so our father I pray in your holy
26:54
name. Forgive me of my sins.
26:59
Forgive me of my sins. In this day,
27:02
impart thy salvation unto me.
27:07
For your mercy
27:09
endures forever. For your mercy endures
27:14
forever. I pray that you have said that
27:18
simple prayer. Call upon God for your
27:21
salvation
27:23
and the life that only God can give. For
27:28
truly his mercy endures forever. Amen.
