What is up comic book fans
0:09
It is another edition of Pull This for the week of November 7th, 2018
0:14
I'm your host Connor Christensen with Adventures in Poor Case Comics bringing you the top five
0:20
books of the week. It is officially fall. Well, I guess October is sort of officially fall, but I live in San Diego, Southern California
0:28
We really don't have fall. That's even sort of not really fall, but it's November, so I'm calling it officially fall
0:33
Also, we don't have winter here. We just have summer, we have fall, we have spring
0:39
That's it. Because it's fall, I got the flannel on. It's fall flannel season. I'm happy
0:43
But this isn't a clothing video. This isn't a seasons video. This is a comic book video
0:49
So let's talk about the five best comics of the week that you need to buy
0:54
At number five this week, we've got Empty Man number one written by Colin Bunn and drawn
0:59
by Jesus Herbaz. Where's Jesus? You know, I've always thought about that. Like, is it Big Lebowski
1:03
You know, like dead Jesus? Maybe this guy's Jesus. I don't know. Maybe
1:10
Most mainstream comic book fans probably know Colin Bunn from his staggering resume of Marvel
1:15
titles from Deadpool to Venom to all the different X-Men stories. But indie comic book fans probably know Colin Bunn as the horror mastermind that he truly is
1:27
From Thor County, Bone Parish, and the Kickstarter back to Passage in Black, Colin Bunn is always
1:32
writing killer horror stories. And that continues this week with Empty Man number one from Boom Studios
1:39
This series is set within the Empty Man universe that was established in the original Boom
1:42
Studios graphic novel and tells the story of a family whose daughter becomes ill with
1:48
the Empty Man disease. And instead of taking her to the government mandated quarantine, they decide to just try
1:54
to keep her at home and keep her illness a secret. And they're actually way too trusting
1:59
So this kind of sounds less like a true horror story and more like a supernatural end of
2:03
world thriller. But either way, you got Colin Bunn at the helm
2:07
I'm excited. I'm going to check it out. Coming in at number four this week, we've got Star Wars Han Solo Imperial Cadet number
2:14
one written by Robbie Thompson and drawn by Leonard Kirk. You know what
2:19
I love Solo, a Star Wars story. I'm not afraid to say it. I've never been afraid to say it
2:23
I've been singing the movie's praises since the day I saw it. I think it's absolutely fantastic
2:27
In fact, I think it is the second best Star Wars movie that Disney has produced yet
2:32
Bonus points if you can name the first. Hint, it's Rogue One. Fight me in the comments because it's the best Star Wars movie they've made yet
2:40
Not ever. Not the best Star Wars movie ever. You get the point. It's the best Disney one
2:44
Personally, I cannot get enough of young Han Solo and I really want to learn more about
2:48
his time spent in the Imperial Flight Academy, which I thought was kind of breezed over in
2:52
the film. And by breezed over, I mean not really mentioned at all, only brought up in a deleted scene
2:59
that wasn't even that good in the first place. Lo and behold, we get Imperial Cadet out this week, which decides to tell the tale of what
3:08
the Imperial Navy Cadet Han Solo was like. And I'm guessing he's a total wisecracking smartass
3:14
And who better to write the wisecracking, young, egotistical, smartass Han Solo than
3:21
Robbie Thompson. The guy is kind of an unsung star at Marvel and he has been killing it on the Spider-Man
3:28
and Deadpool series for a very long time now. So I think he's a great fit for the series and I cannot wait to see where it goes
3:34
I will be talking about it a lot, I'm sure, on the Star Wars and Poor Taste podcast
3:40
Go subscribe to it. It's great. Coming in at number three this week is Eclipse number 12, written by Zac Kaplan and drawn
3:48
by Giovanni Tampano. Eclipse is a series that flew just under my radar for far too long
3:54
I'd seen glimpses of it in the comic book stores. I'd heard a little bit about it, but I never really dove into the series
3:59
That is, of course, until I met Zac Kaplan at New York Comic Con
4:04
Went over to his booth just to talk to him about Port of Earths, which is also a fantastic
4:08
series that he writes. And he really sold me on this book, so I picked up the first volume of the first trade and
4:14
I was immediately hooked. I went back the next day, I made a beeline to his booth, picked up the second book, I
4:20
love it, it's a fantastic series, and now is a great time to jump on
4:24
Eclipse is awesome just for the premise alone. It's about a post-apocalyptic world where the sun burns people alive
4:30
Nobody knows why, nobody knows what happened, nobody knows the science of it
4:34
They can't tell if the sun is just super, super hot and that's what burns people alive
4:38
or if there's some sort of chemical imbalance that suddenly causes UV rays to ignite people's skin
4:44
Nobody can figure it out, what has happened. All they know is that they can't go out during the day, they can go out during night, and
4:50
that humanity has become a nocturnal, underground living mole people. Okay, not mole people, they're still normal people, but they all live underground, they
4:57
can only come out at night. It's a very, very interesting premise
5:01
Driving that premise home, though, to make it a truly unique and outstanding book, is
5:05
the incredible raw, emotional, human characters that are at play. Each of which have their own motivations, their own rich, incredible backstories that
5:12
truly make this book a standout science fiction story. These incredibly human, complex characters ground the very, very far-fetched plot
5:22
Even Zack joked at New York Comic Con that he understands that this might be scientifically impossible
5:28
That doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable story, and it is an incredibly enjoyable story
5:31
I cannot recommend this enough. Go to your comic book store on Wednesday, pick up number 12, and while you're there
5:37
pick up numbers 10, 11, and number 9. Don't know why I said those out of order, don't ask why
5:42
But pick up the entire arc. This book right here ends the third arc, and I promise you're gonna love it
5:47
It's a great series. Alright, coming in at number 2 this week is Green Lantern, number 1, written by Grant
5:53
Morrison and drawn by Liam Sharp. I feel like this has been one of DC's most highly anticipated books in years, and for
6:01
good reason. It has two of their hottest stars on the book, one of which is almost a comic book legend
6:07
at this point. That's right, you've got writer Grant Morrison helming this book
6:12
The guy has been around since the mid-80s writing comics. He's most known for a totally submersive and incredible run on Doom Patrol and Arkham Asylum
6:21
a serious house on serious earth, which is one of the creepiest Batman stories ever told
6:28
It was a graphic novel in the late 80s. It's really, really, really good
6:32
I mean, I really don't need to sing the praises of Grant Morrison. We all know who he is
6:36
We all know how incredible he is at writing comic books, so we should all be stoked that he's doing Green Lantern now
6:41
Then you've got artist Liam Sharp, who has an equally impressive track record that also
6:46
dates back to the mid-80s with his incredibly gorgeous but equally detailed and intricate
6:51
drawings that are immediately recognizable. Most recently he did The Brave and the Bold, which I didn't necessarily like the story
6:58
that much, but I did think it was just gorgeously drawn, and he took a chance on Wonder Woman
7:03
did some Wonder Woman issues. Liam Sharp's incredible. I can't wait to see how these two complement each other
7:08
Although I did enjoy both Green Lantern Corps and the Green Lantern series, I'm kind of
7:14
excited for DC to pull the Green Lanterns back and focus on just the one singular lantern
7:20
I think it'll make for a much more pointed and poignant series that focuses on just one
7:25
single lantern rather than trying to jumble six different storylines at once
7:30
With Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp guiding this story, I think it's going to be truly incredible
7:35
And at number one this week is Marvel Knights 20th Anniversary number one, written by Donny
7:40
Cates and drawn by Travel Foreman. Now it's easy to get caught up in nostalgic excitement for this series
7:47
I mean, it's the 20th anniversary of one of the most monumental Marvel imprints ever
7:52
But me? I'm just excited that Marvel is giving Donny Cates the reins to his own little corner of
7:59
the Marvel Universe. I am completely enamored by Donny Cates' run on both Venom and the Inhumans right now
8:06
So I cannot wait to see what he does with characters like Daredevil, The Punisher, Luke
8:10
Cage, Spider-Man, Hell, Moon Knight. There's tons of characters that might be played with in this series
8:17
I am so excited to see what Donny Cates does with any and all of them
8:21
And Cates is not joined by some brand new no-name artist. He's joined by Travel Foreman
8:27
Now if you don't know Travel Foreman, you probably do, you just might not recognize
8:31
the name. Travel Foreman is the guy who gave the incredible visual aesthetic to the awesome Tales of Suspense
8:37
series earlier this year. So it's a killer, killer writer teaming up with an awesome artist to kind of carve out
8:45
their own little space in the Marvel Universe. This launch is a six-issue miniseries that celebrates the Marvel Knights' imprint for
8:52
its 20th anniversary, but will eventually include stories from such superstars in Marvel
8:57
like Matthew Rosenberg and Vita Ayala. So you've got to know that if Marvel's putting this much talent behind this event, they have
9:03
some serious faith in it that it's going to do well. More than anything, I'm just excited to see a stand-alone Marvel event that doesn't feel
9:11
the need to tie into the greater universe or tie into current continuity
9:15
Don't get me wrong, those event stories are great, and I really, really like Infinity Wars
9:20
I love Secret Empire. Let's not talk about Civil War II. For the most part, I do actually enjoy those event series, but I'm so excited and a little
9:28
bit relieved that we're going to get an event that doesn't need to be hampered by the rest
9:32
of the universe, that can just exist on its own and do its own thing
9:36
And no one's better to do that than Donny Cates. I'm just real excited, people
9:41
All right, and that about wraps things up for the week of November 7th, 2018
9:48
Make sure to rate, review, subscribe, share with your friends, tweet it out, all that
9:52
fun stuff. That's all I've got this week. I'll see you guys next week
