Blake and Nathaniel are joined by AIPT Movie Contributor Regina to talk about the streaming options that are available to everyone. The three talk about the ones they use the most, their favorite shows, and which ones are worth money the charge.
They also talk about whether free streaming options are worth it, what would convince them to pay money for a new network in today's glutted market, and if they had to drop one of the streaming networks they have, which would it be. The answers will surprise you.

So this week on what you need to know, we're going to talk about something that we've talked about quite a lot actually in the past, but never to this level
0:17
So especially in streaming's been around for years and years and years now
0:21
It's a very, very popular form of viewing for, I mean, some of us on the show, that's all we do is one movie and have for many, many years
0:30
But now more than ever, it's become a part of people's life
0:33
So we kind of want to do a rundown of some of our favorite streaming networks
0:37
And maybe the ones that they might not necessarily be our favorites, but we have them or use them
0:42
And they provide the best bang for your buck, as it were
0:46
So I guess the simple question is, what are your favorite streaming networks
0:51
Or which do you use the most often? I guess is a better way to go. Let's see
0:55
Well, I use Pluto, which is totally free on your Roku. and on other devices, it's completely free
1:03
And you know what? It's got, if you haven't seen it, check it out. You just got to get the app
1:08
So I watch it on the Roku. I believe it's also available like on a fire stick
1:13
But so Pluto has a very strange. It's like having cable, which I kind of like the feeling of that
1:21
So I can kind of flip through channels again like in the old days. But so it's got like a bunch of like movie sections at the beginning
1:29
And yes, they're old movies that they kind of play over and over. Like a whole month and a half is devoted to the exact same movies
1:36
But so it gets a little bit old, but they're fun. They're like old classic
1:40
Like there's a whole channel that's just romance movies. There's three horror channels
1:45
There's an asylum channel. If you like asylum films, there's nothing but asylum films all day long on that channel
1:52
There's a whole comedy section. There's like a British TV section, which is my favorite section because I get to watch Father Ted
1:59
So I love Father Ted. Don't like Ram Blaine him, but I love Father Ted
2:03
There's an American Gladiator's channel. Yeah. Which is pretty awesome. If I'm not mistaken, is there not an MST3K channel
2:12
There is an MSC. Yes, there is. Yeah. And a separate Rift Tracks channel too
2:18
Wow. Okay. Yeah. I remember this. And I also feel like there's a Bob Ross channel
2:24
I could be wrong. But, yeah, I actually like Pluto. Pluto is pretty cool
2:29
You're reminding me I should download that on my fire stick in my office. They just recently added a Three's Company channel, so Three's Company all day down
2:39
Here's the funny thing, because I've actually been watching it for the past, like, hour and a half, two hours
2:43
They used the same opening from like the first season or two with Chrissy
2:49
but they're in the seasons with Cindy. So they know who the moneymaker was for that show, obviously
2:56
We got to hook them still. Yeah. I was there for two hours, so
3:03
It was a fun-ass show. It's in the Mr. Furley years. Oh, boy
3:09
Wow, great outfits. Pluto's cool, because back in the day when the streaming channels first started
3:15
I remember, I think Crackle was one of them. It was like, it's free, it's free
3:19
But it was commercials like every 45 to 60 seconds, constant, constant commercials
3:24
They've gotten a whole lot better with that. now um i think that it's they're spaced out like normal television like there's only two commercial
3:32
break even one commercial break in a in a 20 minute show i don't think there's any commercial well no there are during the movies but they are the same commercials but then that's kind of like
3:40
regular tv too so i mean cost wise you can't beat it because it's free but uh you you don't have
3:46
to worry about the constant barrage of commercials like it was like 10 years ago when you
3:51
it was more commercial than show so yeah Pluto's pretty cool actually though you don't
3:56
do have to be willing to watch the same movies over and over and over again
4:02
I mean, if you like, there will be blood, then, yeah, that's all you get to watch it over and over again
4:08
I'll drink that milkshake. I was trying to think of a milkshake thing. So what was the question
4:19
Which streaming network do you spend the most time and or money on Oh the most time Okay so I was thinking about this I been on a net I been on Netflix for like over time Can it be over 10 years
4:32
It's got to be. I feel like, yeah, I feel like I've been a Netflix member for at least that long
4:38
But the one I've been using more lately is Amazon Prime. I don't have, I don't have Apple TV and I don't have some of these other ones
4:49
But like, I have Hulu and Hulu life. but and that's really only good for like for me it's like watching the sports right now
4:55
but amazon prime they have such a broad uh and kind of eclectic group of movies on there and
5:03
sometimes it's it's stuff you want to see in big and big hits and stuff but then if you go digging
5:08
through the what's available for a prime member um there's all sorts of weird stuff that's worth
5:12
watching and cool documentaries and uh you also get all the benefits of being and if you're an amazon
5:18
hate or whatever. I don't know. That's your deal. But, like, I order shit all the time
5:23
And, like, that's... And having all these movies on my, you know, available on top of having some of those bonus
5:28
features, which include my shutter subscription, which I also use a lot of
5:34
But I use that basically exclusively through Amazon Prime. Amazon, and you're right, they are so eclectic
5:41
And if you dig through it, it's pretty nuts. Like, you can find..
5:46
I just randomly found wrestling. professionally wrestling from Memphis, Tennessee, from the late 70s to mid-80s
5:52
which is like the craziest shit to find. Because it's not, it's like not on the WWE network or anything
5:59
But it's on, it's on Amazon for whatever. But you're right, they have
6:02
they have a good selection. They have a really good selection of movies, actually
6:07
They do. It's a really good. I don't use Amazon Prime that much
6:10
It's not because I don't like it or anything. It's not, I'm not changing a stance on it
6:14
I just, it's usually someone else will be like, oh, it's on Amazon Prime. So I'll watch it
6:18
type of thing. Sure. Sure. I rent my movies through there, too, though
6:22
Like, that's like the service I use predominantly. If I'm going to rent a movie that's available on streaming, that's what I'll use too
6:28
So, I mean, yeah, they're getting some money from me. them. They got stuff I want
6:33
Yeah, I mean, they kind of deserve it, right? Yeah. I agree
6:37
I use a lot of frames. Oh, sorry. Talk about you. No, no, go free. Because I don't use price
6:44
Well, no, that's where I found that movie strange behavior. I couldn't find anywhere else
6:48
I found you on Amazon frame, and it was free. So that was cool. And then, like, I mean, you have, like, a really good collection of TV shows, too
6:55
Yeah, they've had some really good TV shows. Fleabag, I guess. Is that, is that a prime one
6:59
That one's really good. Oh, the Bois. The Boys is on there
7:03
Yeah. They've made that super worth keeping around. Yeah, they have. There was the, uh, what's the one with Hugh Grant
7:11
A very, a very English scandal, I think it is. Yeah. Very English
7:16
Yeah. Well, that's basically, that's, you're, you're. That's kind of what it's about, actually
7:22
That's the pervaying attitude of that. But, yeah, really good shows on there
7:26
You mentioned Shudder also, which if you're a horror fan, it's, you know, it's an amazing, amazing channel to have
7:33
The documentaries on there are great. They just came out within search of darkness
7:38
which is like a four-hour documentary about 80s horror. There's the Crystal Lake memories that are on there
7:44
But it's not just about old movies that are, I mean, yummy that zombie movie just recently came out of i i think it's like the best zombie movie in quite a
7:53
while i'm not a big zombie fan except from like the classics like shot of the dead right but uh
7:59
they they they find really good stuff on there um they have good television shows too they do and like
8:04
three probably three of my more you know liked uh horror movies that have watched recently i've all
8:10
they've all come from shutter and then i think a couple of them are shutter originals or at least one of
8:15
them is. So yeah, I think they're doing a lot of good over there. Not to mention
8:18
Joe Bob and all his shit. He does the... Oh, always Joe Bob
8:22
You know what I mean? So I hope that's that I think that
8:26
would be a selling point for some people, just that whole bit of content. Oh yeah
8:31
absolutely. It's like their second most watched show right behind Creep Show, which
8:34
ups and downs, but overall are very good I thought it was very fun
8:39
I enjoyed it a lot. And you're right. I mean, they've been knocking out of the park
8:43
recently with a host and La Yarona host is kind of taking the world by storm And La Yarona is a little under underrated I think or at least it not as well known But I mean it every bit as good in a different way
8:59
Well, and we brought it up right before we got on. But one cut of the dead, is that, does that exclusive to that right now too
9:05
Because like that, that's a super worth your time. And I know it was on Joe Bob's thing, but I watched it through something
9:12
Yeah, it's a, I think it might only be on Shudder, actually. Yeah, I think that's right
9:16
And it's, yeah, that's worth your time. because they have the classics, of course
9:21
They have, like, Gialo, and then they have crazy stuff, like, you know, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer type thing
9:26
But they're really, really good with mixing it up, I think. And they have comedies on there
9:33
They have old stuff. Regina, you were mentioning Hammer films earlier. Oh, yeah, they had that really cool
9:40
It's called Hammer Horror. It's like The Show, like, Tales from the Dark Side. Like, it's like a little, like, mini movie
9:45
Oh, I saw that. I was wondering if it was any good. Yeah. They take it off and put it back on every now
9:50
And then they're really fun episodes. You know what? Sometimes they'll show that on Pluto too
9:55
But yeah, they're pretty fun. And I was looking for that one day because they had tales from the dark side for the longest time on Shutter
10:01
And I love tells from the dark side. And then they took that off and they replaced it with the Hammer Anthology
10:07
I think it's called. Yeah, I think it's just called Hammer Horror is what it's called. Yeah. So those are fun little like shorts
10:12
Well, not really shorts, but they're too long to be episodes too. So short films, just go with that
10:17
Tell us for the dark side It was actually scary sometimes It was especially just the opening credits
10:24
It was already freaky Yeah, it had like a really great opening sequence
10:27
One of the best did most people Yeah I would say that shutter cost-wise
10:35
Now they just recently raised their price like by a dollar So yeah
10:39
So basically for the whole year And I have a deal too
10:43
You can get the whole year for 50 bucks for shutter and based on the content
10:48
that's on there it's well well worth it you'll get that value out of it in a month if you
10:54
actually just kind of sit down and watch something every night you would definitely feel like you got $50
10:58
worth of value out of that yeah easily easily they have uh they recently
11:02
renewed um the second season of a curse curse films is going to be coming
11:06
out so if you're into that kind of thing it's cool macula's on here they got
11:10
exploitation movie expectation uh and then they have this the weird bonko shit
11:16
that you might not want to see, like, like, cannibal Holocaust is on there
11:21
Oh, yeah, that's right. Get it while it's hot, because pretty soon you're not going to be able to see that anywhere
11:27
That's, good. Not that I'd recommend that. I wouldn't. I wouldn't. Not even just to say that you've seen it because it's
11:34
why would you want to? I think at Netflix you mentioned, like
11:37
gosh, I don't know how long I've had Netflix for, but, you know, that one's kind of lost its luster
11:43
Like, every once in a while, they'll come out with stuff. The Unsolved Mysteries, for example, has been really, really cool
11:50
But I don't know. It's just there's so much competition. There's so many options now that Netflix is kind of
11:57
when it used to be the absolute first thing that I would go to, it's kind of like, you know, just sometimes you'll come across it and want to see something
12:05
But I don't know. It's just not the same. Maybe there are too many streaming networks. I don't watch Disney Plus, like, ever anymore
12:11
Yeah, I haven't, I canceled mine, even though I was like getting for free. I was like, I'm not just, I knew I wasn't going to stick with it anyway, but yeah, there's a glut of them
12:21
And like recently, one of the reasons I thought of was thinking about this was, there's a radio, it sounds weird, but there's a radio program
12:29
I like to watch. They do like a simulcast thing. It's been on YouTube
12:34
It's been on several networks. And they're moving it to Peacock, right? So that's like it's, you guys, I've heard you guys talk about it before
12:42
It's NBC's, I guess, streaming. service. And it's all going to be free
12:48
but I was like, well, I want to watch it. So, like, I was like, looking at a peacock and I was like
12:52
well, it's got like free stuff. Like, but I'm like, God, this is just another one of these things that I'm like
12:57
going to give my email to and sign up for. And then they're going to try to sell me shit for the next however long, you know
13:04
I don't know. It feels at this point, I'm feeling like, yeah, there is kind of like too many
13:09
And I feel personally, I feel like I, I probably have like one too many
13:12
Netflix would be the one I would drop Believe it or not I think if I were going to pick one But yeah that weird Feels weird There too many You know it so funny that you say that because there was a time where it seemed like there no way you can go without Netflix
13:30
But now you say that, if I had to drop one, if someone was like, you know, pick three or four
13:35
like absolutely Netflix would be the very first one that would go. Yeah. That's crazy
13:41
Because, like, even HBO, like now I think is like a better
13:45
I think consistently good product you want to see stuff on and like they have all your old stuff that you'd want to rewatch you know and like Netflix I have recently watched them stuff on there that I've liked but I don't know there's a lot of Netflix original stuff it's like it's like I would say like over half Netflix original stuff on there now
14:06
Yeah they've kind of well they've been forced to go that route almost and it's it's really funny too because before it was like whenever a new thing would come out like
14:15
whatever it was. It was like, okay, I got to sign up for that. I got to have it. Like, now there's
14:19
so many of them. Like, I don't have Peacock. Um, that Quibi thing that came out. Like, I didn't even
14:25
never even considered getting that. Um, HBO Max, like, I mean, have HBO now, so I don't really
14:33
care about HBO Max, but I don't know. Like, Disney Plus, I have it, but now I'm thinking, like
14:38
well, ESPN Plus was cool, but I kind of saw all the 30 for 30 documentaries I wanted to see. So now I just
14:44
kind of have it just but I don't use it so I don't know like yeah that's how I feel a lot of these
14:50
that's how Shudder was I'm not going to lie for a good long time was like okay Shudder like you
14:55
you've had these same 30 movies or so for but then they you know they grew and they were able to
15:00
expand but a lot of this stuff like even even Hulu like if you go dig around on like
15:05
who is like the content that they have just like that that's not live or like some like higher
15:10
subscription base like it's not that great like there's not it's it's it's it's
15:14
bunch of the same shit you've seen like, oh, pineapple express is on there
15:18
Like, cool. Like, you know, like, I love that movie, but like, that shit's been on everything
15:21
You know what I mean? I've seen a hundred times. I can't. I've been, we've been watching Seinfeld for the past few weeks, so I can't see anything bad about Hulu
15:30
Otherwise, they'll take it away from you. No Seinfeld for you. Before that, we watched, we watched the Great, and then Palm Springs is on there
15:39
And what we do in the shadows through the FX stuff that's on Hulu is where we've been
15:44
watch it. Yeah, so that's what I do like about it. It's like I watch a bunch of like
15:48
investigation discovery stuff that's like you can go back and watch the old episodes that I like
15:53
That's something I don't. So I guess the question becomes at this point because there's so many
15:57
streaming and some of them have become so specific like like Shudder. What how could a streaming network
16:04
convince you like immediately to first day to purchase it now? Oh, that's a good question
16:10
It was pretty ridiculous for me. It had to be I was already paying for Hulu. So it was like
16:14
Disney Hulu and ESPN Plus for, it was like, you know, what amounted to $10 a month
16:21
Like that was how crazy the deal had to be for me to get Disney Plus
16:25
But just to pay like whatever, $14 a month for Disney, like I absolutely wouldn't do it
16:31
Yeah, no. Like maybe if like, well, we've talked about this in the past, like maybe if they included in like, if it was a little bit more maybe if let's say it's 20 bucks a month, I do get access to like a
16:44
feature movie theater release once a month, like, that I can watch
16:48
at home, like... That'd be good. That would be something I would be
16:52
interested in, because I'm like, yeah, I'll pay more, but I'm getting most of the same stuff that I always got. Plus
16:57
I get to sit on my ass at home and watch some feature movie. Yeah, I'm down. I might do that. And you've probably
17:02
just predicted a future model, because I'm pretty sure somewhere down the line, Disney's going to be like
17:06
okay... Great Park, . Olin' me a billion dollars, whoever does that. You heard it here
17:12
You're like the guy who invented chicken nuggets. Like, you're just forgotten in history. Yeah, I'm like one of those guys. It's a great idea, but, you know
17:23
Yeah, 65 million bucks. Pay me out, please, whatever. We better copyright this, this episode
17:28
It's, uh, what is it? Intellectual property. It's your, yeah, yes, ours. You know what
17:34
It's ours, guys. I'll chip you guys. I'll chip you guys. Nice. If you get 65 million, then
17:39
you know, I'm cool with one or two. Like, I'm on a greedy, man. All right. Well, all right. Agreed
17:44
So, well, we can edit that part out
