AZAAD…….is the pioneering Wolverhampton-based Bhangra band formed in 1978 by a group of college and school friends who sought to create something distinctive in the British Asian music scene. The band’s name, meaning “freedom” in Punjabi, reflected their innovative spirit as they fused traditional Punjabi folk music and Bhangra rhythms with rock elements, electric guitars, and a modern sound that set them apart. As an eight-piece ensemble, they became one of the leading acts of the 1980s and early 1990s UK Bhangra movement, performing extensively across the country - often two or three gigs a week - and building a massive fanbase. Azaad’s musical legacy include their 1989 album Drum ‘N’ Dhol earning a gold disc award and becoming the biggest-selling Bhangra album of that year. This release exemplified their signature blend of dhol-driven Bhangra with rock influences. Other notable releases include their earlier work Nachdi Jawani (1986), which featured energetic tracks like the title song and helped establish their style; Kabadi in 1988, which was a massive hit that marked one of the first true fusions of rock music with Bhangra; and later albums such as Jata Jaag (1991) and compilations like The Greatest Hits. Songs like ‘Jithe Vi Jaan Punjabi,’ ‘Dil Mera Legayi,’ ‘Teriyan Khiyalan Vich’ and ‘Mohabbat Hogayi’ remain all time favourites in old-school Bhangra playlists and live performances. The band’s vocal prowess was central to its appeal, led by the three prominent singers: Parminder Azaad, Kash Azaad and Harbans Azaad…each with their own unique style and vocal range. They complemented each other beautifully, delivering powerful, harmonious performances that blended Punjabi folk melodies with rock energy. Their combined voices defined Azaad’s sound, contributing to the band’s enduring legacy in live shows and recordings. Azaad’s influence persists through live performances, archival footage, reunions, and tributes in the Bhangra community. Their contributions helped evolve Punjabi folk music into a rock-infused, globally resonant genre within the Indian diaspora.
