KALA PREET Kala Preet were one of the pioneering UK Punjabi bhangra bands whose 1986 album Shava Shava and hit track Gidhey Vich Nachdi Dey helped shape the early music scene. Kala Preet formed in 1969 in Southall at a time when almost no UK‑based Indian bands existed. They taught themselves their instruments and gradually evolved from a successful Hindi/filmi band into a Punjabi/Bhangra group. Their breakthrough came with the 1986 album Shava Shava, produced by Deepak Khazanchi, which became a classic. Their most famous track, Gidhey Vich Nachdi Dey, became a major dance‑floor anthem and remains the band’s best‑known song. Other top tracks included Larry-Lapay, Ni Mud Mud Rahi Vekhde, Meri Kabar De Utay, and Shava Shava Hus Kay, to name a few. Among the musicians who shaped Kala Preet’s identity, Moni stands out as one of the band’s key performers. He was the band’s drummer and vocalist, performing alongside the Late Balbir Kalia, Tarsem, Daljit Sagoo, and Gurdip Bains in the early years. Moni is also associated with the vocals on Gidhey Vich Nachdi Dey, the band’s most enduring track — a song that continues to appear on Punjabi folk compilations and streaming platforms. His dual role as drummer and vocalist placed him at the centre of Kala Preet’s sound, driving both the beat and the emotional energy of their performances. Kala Preet’s influence extended beyond their own music: a number of musicians they trained went on to form major UK bhangra acts such as Heera, Holle Holle, and Alaap, cementing the band’s legacy as foundational contributors to the British bhangra movement.
