Oh, in in the books. He wasn't a tree. He was a giant humanoid that had certain tree ish features. Not a giant, giant eyed tree giant hybrid. So, in the books, he was more of just a giant and he he didn't want to hang out with anybody but the trees, all right. And he was always protecting the tree.
