Have I Ever Been Harassed for Being American Abroad?
Feb 5, 2026
One of the questions I get asked a lot is whether I’ve ever been harassed or targeted for being American while traveling abroad. In this video, I share my honest, real-world experience — including the fact that it has only happened twice in all my years of international travel.
I talk about what happened during those two situations, once in Finland and once in Portugal, and why alcohol played a major role in both encounters. More importantly, I explain why these moments were the exception, not the rule, and how they differ from the everyday interactions most travelers actually experience.
This video isn’t meant to scare anyone away from travel or suggest that Americans are unwelcome abroad — because that simply hasn’t been my experience. Instead, it’s about adding context, understanding situational factors like alcohol and late-night environments, and knowing how to respond calmly when uncomfortable situations arise.
We also talk about perspective, cultural awareness, and why negative encounters tend to stand out more than the thousands of positive interactions travelers have around the world.
If you’re worried about how Americans are perceived overseas, this video offers reassurance, nuance, and practical insight based on real experience — not travel myths or headlines.
