Hey there fellow hungry travelers, Mark here with Vultr's World and today we're in Barcelona and
0:04
today we're going to talk about what you should eat when you come here to Barcelona and I want to
0:09
tell you there's a lot of really good food when you do come to Barcelona so don't think you're
0:13
limited to just Catalan food or Spanish food and because that's what I'm really going to focus on
0:17
in this video is the Catalan food and some of the Spanish classics you should have when you're here
0:22
because I know for some people this is the only city they ever visit in Spain so I want to make
0:26
sure you get a few other good things as well. And I think it's always a good idea to start off with
0:30
a drink. And when you're in Barcelona and you're in Catalonia, you want to have cava. And cava is
0:35
sparkling wine. It's bubble wine. You know, like in France, there's champagne. In Italy, there's
0:40
Prosecco, right? Well, here it's cava and they love their cava. And you'll have that with a meal
0:45
You know, go to other parts of Spain. It's more of like a deserty kind of thing or a special
0:49
occasion kind of thing. Here, no, you can have a glass of cava. No problem whenever you want. And
0:54
what's cool is there's a lot of great wines that are from this region as well but you can actually
0:58
do tours of the vineyards of the winery you know that make cava that make the wines around here so
1:04
maybe it's a little fun thing to do that kind of deals with food and drink when you are here in
1:08
Barcelona and another drink you might want to think about is actually Moritz beer this is actually a
1:12
Barcelona beer that they are very proud of so when you are in Barcelona grab some Moritz too
1:17
when you're here in barcelona one of the things you want to do is you want to hang out
1:26
have some tapas have little snacks with your friends while you're having your drinks right
1:30
so my next set of foods are more like looking at some of the snacky do's or tapas you should have
1:36
when you come to barcelona and one thing is a is a bombas okay it's a potato bomb right and what it
1:42
is is think about like mash like a deep fried mashed potato ball and sometimes i'll put like
1:46
cheese or meat inside the mashed potatoes well and fry it up or sometimes they'll put like the sauce
1:51
on top like you know like it looks almost like a bolognese sauce it's not but it's like in that
1:55
genre on top of to have that that's a really true barcelona like tapa kind of thing to have
2:00
you'll see that a number of restaurants to get okay now another thing that's really popular here
2:05
but also popular in other parts of of spain because they're fantastic are coquetas or croquettes okay
2:11
And what it is, it's basically, it looks like a fried mashed potato finger with some ham
2:16
stock inside. Well it like bechamel cheese and the ham and maybe some more stuff in there and then it battered and they deep fried and it fantastic for a snack and I always find it better to get them to more dive bar places because
2:29
the fancy they look the less good they are you want to have the ones that look like oh mama made
2:33
it you're like yes these are good but you got to get the ham croquettes when you're here that is
2:37
one definite thing and there's other things other kinds of croquettes too but ham definitely one to
2:42
go for now if you want something that's truly truly truly Barcelona you want to get the tomato
2:47
bread okay now i know it says palm tomo kit but i mean i butchered that i can't say it in catalán
2:53
it's just like think of pond with tomato bread with tomato and what it is it's like you have
2:58
toast they toast this fantastic bread they have here lots of good bakeries by the way toast the
3:02
bread you put like the smashed up tomato on there put some olive oil some garlic on there i mean you
3:08
don't necessarily want to kiss your sweetie after you eat it but it is fantastic with drinks just
3:13
sitting out i went to some restaurants and they brought it to me it's like oh you're not from here
3:16
here have some of the bread and they brought it for me and it was it packed a punch but it's really
3:21
tasty and it's something is very much from here okay now another tapas i recommend anywhere you
3:27
go in spain is patatas bravas which is fried little fried potatoes and they put this like
3:32
garlic aioli with it but it's like a spicy aioli with it as well and you have that and you just
3:36
have your little toothpick and eating those things they're so good they're so good we had them at our
3:41
wedding okay so that's another tapas you can have another kind of small thing you could have is if
3:45
here in season have the snails and when you think of snails you think of Europe you think of escargot
3:50
with the butter and the garlic. No no no no the snails here in Barcelona and Catalunya they're
3:56
kind of cooked in a tomato sauce they're really small. If you've ever been to Portugal and had
4:00
their snails it's more in that direction it's the tiny snails not the big like escargot things. Now
4:05
another thing that's very popular here is escalivada. I know I'm butchering the names I'm sorry but this
4:10
This is the kind of like grilled red peppers and onions and eggplant
4:16
And it might be by itself, or you might put it on bread when you're here. That's a nice little kind of tapas thing you can do as well
4:21
Or you can get a bigger version of it, like a ración, or just a bigger size of it to make it kind of like a meal as well
4:26
But that's something that's very typical from here. Another thing you can eat is cascada, which is cod, like shredded up codfish with tomatoes
4:33
onions, olives kind of together. And it works more like a salad, I would say, if you're going to have that
4:38
But that's also really typical of here. Now remember that Escalivada I mentioned there the shredded cod Actually cod in general in Barcelona in this region is very popular because you have the port you have a lot of people that went out to sea and that were sailors And of course salted cod was a very popular thing And if you go to the market here you see cod in the market
4:56
But there's a lot of different cod dishes you can have when you come. So make sure you try some cod
5:00
when you're here. Or honestly, any of the seafood you have here can be wonderful. Like if you really
5:05
want to have good seafood, go get, you know, the calamari, you know, the squid with a cuttlefish
5:09
the sepia. Oh my gosh. You're going to love that when you are here and kind of going along with
5:14
that, you might want to get, you know, paella. I mean, you're coming to Spain. You should have paella when you're here. You know, the rice with the saffron and on there and then the seafood on
5:22
top. Oh, that's the best way to get it. I will tell you though, if you go to any restaurant and
5:26
they have a board there that has all kinds of paellas being shown, that's not going to be good
5:31
paella. You want to go to a paella place that actually makes the paella for you, not just heat
5:35
up in the microwave. Okay, so realize if it says, okay, paella, it's just okay. Now, let's say you
5:42
want to be a little more adventuresome with your paella. You could go with a ros negra, which is
5:46
basically, it's black rice. Okay, and what they do, it's kind of like paella, but they put squid ink
5:51
in it, so it makes the rice black, and it's really kind of a cool thing. It's really, really tasty
5:56
You have cuttlefish on top of there, squid on there. You know, it is pretty good, so that's
6:00
something you could have. So if you want something kind of traditional from around here with the
6:03
seafood but you're kind of tired of having rice then may I recommend fideo and what fideo is
6:09
it's like paella but they use noodles instead when they get it cooked right it's got that crispiness
6:14
oh my god that's one of the best things when you get the paella the the rice gets crispy on the
6:18
bottom on the sides and same thing with the noodles and fideo that's going to be something
6:22
you're really going to love and a lot of places that sell paella will have the the black rice and
6:27
they'll have the fideo so you can kind of choose and I do want to mention if good paella places
6:31
they'll say that hey look this serves two people because to make that big clatter of it it takes a
6:37
lot more space a lot more time a lot more money now if you want something else that's traditional
6:40
from here you have calzots and what calzots are is they're just scallions big old scallions you
6:45
know green onions yeah they'll cook those up i had some the other day on top of pork cheek oh my god
6:52
it was fantastic so you see that as like a side or a topper on your meat or whatever you're you're
6:59
with it. Some places they'll actually just grill them up for it. You could eat them that way if you want, so you can do that. Now if you're going to be coming in
7:04
the winter or the fall there more of a heartier dish that I would recommend you get and that butifada And butifada what it is it a local sausage and they serve it with white beans Now the reason why I say eat it in the winter time is because it quite filling and quite like robust of a meal So if you eating
7:20
it when it's super hot and sunny you might not feel so good doing that. So maybe it's better to
7:26
just like have that more when you come in the winter to enjoy the nice cool winters as opposed
7:31
to the hot summer feeling like you're going to explode. So as I start to finish up this talk
7:35
about the meals you should have here in Barcelona. I think it's also important to talk about what you
7:40
should have at the end of your meal. The desserts. And I've got a couple desserts that I really like
7:44
here. One is creme catalana or crema catalana, which is basically like if you've ever had a creme
7:49
brulee, it's the same deal, okay? You've got the egg and milk custard. You're gonna love that with
7:54
a crispy top on it, like the sugar, and it just makes that crispy top. You get that crack and eat
7:59
it. Oh, that's a really good one. Or, and this is one I guess you could say you get regional cheeses
8:04
them from around here but there's one specific one called mato and mato is this kind of how do i
8:10
explain you have mato and you have honey on top it's kind of like if you looked at it you think
8:14
it was like cottage cheese with honey on top or greek yogurt with honey on top but it has more of
8:18
a consistency of a ricotta so think of like ricotta with honey on top that is the meli mato that you
8:23
should have when you're here and that's kind of like a palate cleansing like you feel healthy after
8:28
having that dessert okay so that mato the reason why it is more like ricotta is because it basically
8:33
is reclata so it's made that way so that's why it's like that so just just an f y on it but yeah
8:39
it's good with the honey and oh yeah these things right here oh and another thing you might see
8:44
are carquinoles these little like biscotti i guess you call them the really hard dry candies
8:50
with the nut the almonds in them um yeah they're dry but they're good so you see those pick those up when you're here too in barcelona
9:00
So, I hope this helps you get some ideas of things you should have when you come here
9:04
to Barcelona. Because honestly, there's tons of great restaurants and tons of different international food here
9:09
you can enjoy. But I wanted to give you some more of the regional Barcelona, Catalonia traditional
9:15
dishes that you could try when you're here. And there's a lot more, believe me
9:18
You got more dishes people should try here in Barcelona, Catalonia. Please put in the comment section below so we can help other travelers be full and happy
9:25
or fat and happy when they leave here in Barcelona, okay? So, have a great time
