Hey there fellow Hungry Travelers, Mark here with Walter's World
0:02
Today we're in Vicenza, Italy. We're actually outside of one of my favorite places, La Pausa di Doggi
0:06
If you're looking for aperitivo when you're here in Vicenza, come here. Christian and his buddies will hook you up with some of the best sprints you're going to have
0:14
But anyway, we're not just here to talk about the aperitivi, we're talking about the food and drinks you should have when you come here to Vicenza, okay
0:21
Because more and more tourists are coming to Vicenza because of the beautiful architecture
0:26
the things you see around here makes a great base for a lot of places around the Veneto
0:29
and you get some really good food when you're here. And probably the most famous food from here, if you talk to other Italians
0:37
is bacala alla vegetina, which is codfish Vicenza style, which when you have it, it looks kind of like a little codfish stew on the side
0:47
and you'll have it with polenta. There's lots of places to serve it around here
0:51
If you want kind of a nice, fun place to go to have it, you can get it at Rigetti for lunch someday when you're here
0:57
but it's available all over town and it's one of those things that's really typical from here
1:01
which is weird because Vicenza is landlocked and codfish is from the sea but that's from the history
1:06
of Vicenza because a lot of the Vicentini were actually sailors for Venice and so they brought
1:11
the food that they ate on their travels back which is really kind of nice so that's one thing
1:16
Another thing that you might actually find in your grocery store that's from Vicenza is Sopresa
1:22
and so it's like a salami you know it's all sliced up but it's from here in vicenza so when
1:27
you see that in your grocery store be like hey i get a little vicenza in my hometown but you can
1:31
have it here with your aperitivi as a snack you can go to the store and pick it up no problem it's
1:36
really really good but i think the most important for me food to have when you are here in vicenza
1:42
is a bigly con arna or bigly with a duck ragu sauce so you know when you think your bolognese
1:47
sauce has got beef in it. Well, this one, it has duck meat in it and it is fantastic. And then what really for me makes it
1:55
pop are the biggily noodles. So biggily, if you're not sure, it
1:58
looks like a really fat spaghetti noodle, but it's an egg noodle So it a little bit different than your normal pasta but it so good It really sucks up the flavor of the duck ragu oh so good but even if you can have the biggly with the duck sauce any of the other biggly pastas
2:12
you're going to have are going to be really wonderful here but i will tell you i'm here in the summertime and it's really hot so you might not find biggly on the menu as much in the summer
2:21
as you would in the winter okay but if you can't find it get it and there's another popular dish
2:26
you'll see on the menu it's risotto and peas would be the translation for it you can get that that's
2:31
kind of a nice local dish to eat when you're here. My friend's mom makes it for me almost as much as
2:36
she makes me the Bigly Con Arna. So thank you, Annalisa. So that's really nice as well. Now
2:41
the reason why I'm here at Palos de Adolgi is because of aperitivi. Aperitivos, those drinks
2:46
you have, you know, one of the religions in Italy. You know, you've got calcio, soccer
2:51
you've got Catholicism, you've got clothing, and you've got aperitivo time. And the thing is
2:56
after work, you will see people from, you know, five until eight, sitting out with their friends
3:01
having some drinks and some little snacks. And that's one of the things you want to do when you're here. And the most popular aperitivo to have, the popular drink to have here is a spritz
3:09
And there's a lot of different kinds of spritz. I know right now around the world, you see spritz
3:13
Aperol, which is Prosecco, bubble water, and then Aperol, this kind of orange sweet liqueur that goes
3:18
into it. That's my personal favorite. And it's so refreshing in the summertime when it's so warm
3:24
here so hot you're like oh it's so good but there's lots of different versions okay so when
3:28
you're here you got spritz aporo which is kind of like the sweet orange and then you have a spritz
3:31
campari which is the bubble water prosecco and it puts campari in there which is a more bitter
3:36
flavor you're going to have and those are the two most popular ones so when you go and you ask for
3:40
a spritz they'll be like oh aporo or campari now some people like them together and you're indecisive
3:45
so of course they call it spritz indichivo which is like i am undecided i'm indecisive on this
3:51
you can have that and that mixes Apro and Campari with the Prosecco and
3:55
bubble water. Now you might see one called a Spritz Select. That's actually from
3:59
Venice and that's a really bitter liqueur that goes in there. It's Jocelyn likes it. It's not my
4:03
jam but it's another kind you'll have. You'll see it's more red looking when you get that Spritz
4:08
But some people, like my friend Kika, she is all about Spritz Lixo which is like a clean Spritz which is just Prosecco and bubble water and of course ice in there And it just so refreshing You can have that But when you go get your aperitivis those drinks they usually bring out some little
4:22
snacks for you. And sometimes that sopresa will be there. Or there might be some other really nice things from around this area
4:28
Because Asiago, you know, the Asiago cheeses you've heard about, that's actually here in
4:33
this province. And you can actually get the great cheeses from Asiago when you are here
4:37
I mean, we had a plate of Asiago cheese, there's various kinds when we were here, with our Sopresa the other night
4:42
Oh, it was so good. Also, by Morostica, the cherries from there are fantastic
4:46
But also, there's the liqueurs you might want to try when you're around here. There's a small town you can go to that makes Mezzi Mezzi
4:53
which is another kind of pre-made cocktail you can have. And you'll see it more and more
4:57
We actually went and visited them and filmed with them a few years ago. Had a wonderful time with them
5:01
But I think the strong after-dinner drink you need to make sure you have when you're here is Grappa
5:07
And the thing is, you can go to Bassano del Grappa, you know, the name's from, and go have Grappa, the really strong liquor, underneath the bridge in Grappa
5:15
It's awesome. Great day trip from here, by the way. But you can have Grappa for an after dinner, kind of make your belly feel better
5:21
after all that pasta and all the great food you've had here. Now, I know some people, Grappa's a little too strong
5:26
They like some a little bit sweeter. There's actually Torcalato, which is a sweet dessert wine that's from this region
5:33
Another wine that's from here is Gambelara. I know I'm butchering the name
5:38
I'm sorry, my Italian sucks. But forse un giorno io posso parlare di italiano perfettamente
5:43
perché io bevo bastanti aperativi qui con Cristiano in Nevada. Vediamo. Okay, anyway, so hopefully one day with some more grappa
5:50
and all these things, my Italian will work better. And your Italian actually will work better
5:54
because that's one of the great things. Having these drinks and doing the aperativi, it's a great time to actually meet the locals here
5:59
and make friends with the people here because the people here are super, super open. And a lot of them speak English
6:04
because our next food thing I want to talk about is this is the capital for Tex-Mex American
6:10
barbecue and burgers in Italy. And you may ask yourself, why is that, Mark
6:15
Well there actually a U base here with literally thousands of U soldiers and service personnel here and all the people that helped them out and they missed their food from home So you get great burgers here You get great barbecue here You get I mean if you want to get that spaghetti with meatballs
6:30
or the Kraft macaroni and cheese stuff from home, there's a place by the base that will sell it
6:34
But honestly, I know sometimes when people travel around a lot, they miss food from home
6:39
So if you're American and you miss your American food or somebody wants to try American food, you can have great American food when you're here by the base
6:45
but also not by the base because we were at the Prince of Wales. It was a Welsh pub, English pub
6:51
We went to fantastic burgers there. There's beer areas. There's breweries around here
6:54
You can go and have great food. So you've got a lot more options than just pasta and pizza when you are here
7:00
Though the pasta and pizza is fantastic here as well. So there is that. I actually had pizza that had the duck ragu sauce on it
7:06
Oh, so good, okay? So some other little things I want to tell you about eating here in Vicenza
7:11
One thing you need to know is if you want to eat kind of downtown on the weekends
7:15
Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights. You need to make sure you make reservations. Otherwise, you'll just keep wandering around trying to find a place
7:21
So when you wander around and join the city and you see a place in the afternoon, you see someone there and it's like, oh, could I get a reservation for two
7:27
Could I get a reservation for four for tonight? Maybe they'll have space tonight, but they might have it for tomorrow
7:31
So you get those things set up. Because my goodness, the food here is fantastic
7:35
Whether it's the biggily, whether it's the bacala, or whether it's just sitting back and having some spritz
7:39
you're going to love eating and drinking here in Vicenza. So if you do come say hi to my buddy Christian at his bar, I wish you all the best
7:46
I'll say bye from here in Vicenza, Italy. Oh, before I leave, there is one more thing I want to mention to you
7:59
Don't think you're going to eat cat when you're here in Vicenza, okay
8:03
Because the Mangi Gatti, the cat eaters, is kind of a nickname that people from Italy have about Vicenza
8:09
that was because in some really tough times there might have been a cat eaten or two
8:14
I'm not going to say yes or no on that one but that is one of those things that people talk about
8:18
here in Vicenza but don't worry there's no cats you're going to eat here. Though I haven't seen
8:22
any cats wandering around. Hmm. Ciao from Vicenza
