Hey there fellow beer drinkers and holiday celebrators and advent calendar lovers, because you know, it's a great combination
0:07
And today what we're going to talk about is this. This is the Brewer's Advent Calendar
0:12
This is the advent calendar that they had at Costco this year that lets you have a different beer every day from December 1st through the 24th
0:21
It even says up on here, Brewer's Advent Calendar, open a beer a day, December 1st to 24th
0:26
Very nice of them. Actually a wonderful gift. My favorite birthday gift I get this year
0:31
And what's cool is they actually show you the beers you're going to get when you're there. There's a lot of different varieties. You've got Helles Bier, right
0:37
You've got Weizen Bier, Hefe Weizen Bier, Bavarian style Mertzen Bier. So there's a lot of different styles that are on here
0:44
So there's a lot of real actual German style beers. But I'll be honest with you, I've never heard of any of these beers in my entire life
0:50
And I lived three years in Germany. I got my master's in Germany. I used to go there every single year until, you know, the last couple years, but we'll be back this coming year
0:59
But I thought it would be good for me to go through this. So if you're going to be drinking it, you have an idea of what to expect
1:04
Now, I can't go through all 24 in one video. So what we're going to do is each week through Christmas, we're going to be doing six to eight beers once a week
1:14
So we'll get an idea of what to expect for your first week of this
1:17
All right. So what's nice is they actually give you instructions on here
1:21
It says bring it home safe. Yes, we got it here. manage to wait until the first of December
1:26
It's time to open the first window and cool your beer. So you don't just take it out
1:30
Now, what I've done is actually kept this outside, relatively cool outside
1:35
Not freezing, but quite cool. So these should be ready to go. But I wanted to give you an idea
1:40
So let's look. And what's nice is they have it hidden around. So you've got to search like when you're a little kid
1:43
But there is number one. And our first beer, obviously these aren't as easy to get out
1:48
if you know what I'm saying, is the Grand Le Jal. Okay, so you have this one
1:52
Now, it's got a grumpy German Helles, so that's nice. Let's see
1:58
Brewed in Germany. Hennig-Istolf ingredients. Water, barley, malt, and hops. Just like it's supposed to be for the German Rammheitsgebot, so we'll try this one
2:09
So I've got a glass. Obviously, when you're in Germany, you have different glasses for different styles of beer
2:14
I don't have all my beer collection out here in our new house, so I'm just grabbing a Christmas-themed, a Christmas-story glass to show you the beer that's here
2:22
So we're going to start off with the first day of Christmas, Gratla Helle, the grumpy German Hellez
2:30
I'm not the professional. As you can tell, with way too much head on there
2:34
but it is very clear and does smell a little off as well
2:39
like it was boxed in July and sent over here. That's not bad
2:45
That's not bad at all. The smell is a little skunk at first
2:49
I think that's because these beers, when they put these together, must be a while ago for a hellis beer that's actually pretty good i can't complain about that
2:57
so day one you'll have a good beer there just to smell it first let it dissipate a bit and then
3:02
enjoy nice color in there you can see first day granda hellis you're gonna have a good one to start
3:09
off with now day two december it's a thursday down at the bottom they have these little holes
3:17
You kind of pop it in, rip out. Now I wonder how this is going to stand up
3:23
when we start getting lower in the numbers, because you can feel the weight pushing down on it So I don know because seven five seven okay they got higher numbers here but like 22nd I don know if that one going to stay up there the whole time so day two December 2nd we have the it imported product of Germany it made a private brewery Teisendorf well that what
3:50
happening from Teisendorf okay so we're looking at a Weisbier so it's going to be thicker I expect
3:54
to be a little bit darker. This is one of the beers I kind of am a go-to when I am in Germany
3:59
but again, though this brewery has been there since 1666, I have not had this beer before
4:04
But I will tell you, when you're in Germany, literally every town has like multiple breweries
4:10
It's not uncommon to have brewers you haven't had before. That's why it's important when you go
4:14
you ask, what's the local beer? Because if you're in the U.S., you can always get a Budweiser, a Bud Light, or Miller Lite. In Germany, I guess you have like Vosteina and Becks that are
4:21
all over the country, but your better bet is to drink the beer that's local. Okay, so here we go
4:27
Oh yeah, you can see the thicker bitterness of it. Ooh, look at that
4:33
Oh, that is a Weispia. Can you see that? That is, that's, that looks right
4:39
This is actually looking good. Oh, it smells right. Yeah, this, okay, this one, okay, that Helles we had first was fine
4:46
They should have started with this because this one is straight. Smell, it's taken me back when I used to live in Germany
4:51
The flavor is good too. See a little piece of rice that popped out. I'm going to have it fizzed up
4:55
That's pretty good. I'm going to have to have that. That's a good one. So day two, December 2nd, your Weispia
5:02
Yeah, you're going to like this one. Day two, December 2nd, you're going to be just fine with that one
5:06
So on the third day of Christmas beer, what do we have
5:11
They've done well so far. That Helles was good, but that day two was nice. The beer, third beer you get is Ams Heves
5:19
Okay, so it's got the sticker label. This feels like when you go to the, oh yeah, you go get a craft beer in the US and they just put the sticker on the cans
5:27
This is exactly what it feels like. It says Alms craft beer
5:31
And remember, in Germany, a light beer, a Helles or a Hellbier, does not mean like light in calories and light in alcoholic
5:38
You guys just means more the color. So this one is from Grosskönbach in Germany
5:44
Got a nice good boat. So we're back to normal stuff. We'll try this Kraft Helles here
5:48
It is very Helles. It is very light. I feel like I drink a lot of these and I'm going to have to go to the bathroom quite a few times
5:54
The other hell is what we go with the first one smelled old
5:57
This one doesn't smell old. This one doesn't have much of a smell. Nothing special. Drinkability wise. Ooh
6:05
When it first goes in it's fine, but the after... Ugh. The aftertaste is horrible
6:10
No, I don't want to drink anymore. Oh my god. Yeah, no. This one, the Alms one, day three
6:16
Here's the thing. December 3rd, the year this comes out, guess what? That is a Friday
6:21
This one, give it to your friend or the friend you don't like that comes to your house
6:25
because this Almscraft beer, this is horrible. Never heard of it, never want to hear about it again
6:30
and never want to drink it. Okay, moving on to day four. Day four, where do we have, there it is
6:36
All right. Oh yeah, this thing is collapsing out the bottom. So you're probably gonna want to start laying it down
6:43
on its backside. So the fun of this, it doesn't last very long
6:48
Because we're only on day four and I already have to lay it down on its backside
6:52
This isn't put together very well. Alright, number four. Oh yeah you look inside here you can see how they just kind of like lay in there and it barely held in See at the bottom there down there And that starts to slip so not going to be fun Not when you hang on the wall and take stuff off of But alas we got to put this up But I had to be careful because whew that thing going to fall
7:17
Alright, fourth day. What do we have? The Husaren Trunk. Husaren Sud, the Husaren Drink
7:22
It's from a castle brewery. It is from Brockville Rita. No idea where that is
7:28
I have no idea where that is. Hopefully my editors can find it on a map and then they can put it on there
7:33
But I don't know what kind this is. We'll find out. Opens easy
7:39
Smells like beer. Again, I'm just using different glasses for stuff here. Might not be the right one
7:44
A little bit darker than our other house. So this is a different kind. So let's see what we got
7:51
That's not bad. Well, it's a Maelsen Bavarian style. That's what I said
7:55
This is 5.3% alcohol. You can sit down and drink this one. This is on Saturday the 4th
8:02
And you can sit down and drink this one no problem. This is a no problem drinking one
8:06
Yeah, I like that. That's not bad. That's way better than this Alms one
8:10
Ooh, that was brutal. Oh my God, don't get that one. All right, it's Sunday. It's December 5th
8:16
Time to see the fifth beer of the sun here. Number five is right up here. Get through a few today. This one's on top
8:23
Still get this one out. Ooh, ooh, ooh. Der Schwarzbach. Yeah! Nice
8:31
Mmm, Kraft Brewery Station, 6.2% alcohol by the German Reinheitsgebot from Böblingen, Germany
8:40
Great name. I feel like if I drink this, I'm not going to sleep tonight. I don't know why
8:45
I do like how you have a little smiley face here, can you see from this camera over here, and that's so smiley face making you happy
8:49
Oh yeah, it's a Schwarzbier. Schwarzbier means black beer. Now I have to pour it poorly
8:55
and I look like a poor drunk man like this, spilling everywhere, but as you can see
8:59
this is a Schwarzbier, really caramel coloring. Mmm, smells, kind of throws me back to the days
9:08
when I used to hang out a lot in the, the Düsseldorf area, not Düsseldorf area
9:12
So this is from, yeah, so let's try. If you like Schwarzbier
9:19
now Kostritze is my favorite Schwarzbier. It's one of my favorite beers ever
9:23
You can get Kischlitsa in your local beer stores and liquor stores in the US
9:27
This is right up there. This is actually pretty good. This is a good Schwarzbier
9:31
I'm gonna say this is probably number two tonight. That's really good
9:35
That's good. Day five, you're doing good. Nice. So, we're getting towards the end of the first week
9:41
Day six, December 6th. There's six, all right. See, at least they're taking more from the top
9:46
because honestly, see how this is all bent down? Ugh. This is a lot more complicated than it looks
9:51
Day six, we have the Zwickl Kellebier. So the basement beer or the unfiltered beer, nice
9:58
This is from the Herrmbrau, premium Bavaria. Ingolstadt, I have an Ingolstadt
10:04
At least I know where that one is. All right, cool. So this Kellebier is 5% alcohol
10:09
Pour it in. This is from a local pub where I live. Please don't judge me on my beer pouring skills
10:14
I've got too much, too many tried today. So it's got a nice color
10:19
Kellebier, nice. Nice head. It doesn't smell like a Kella, the basement. It doesn't smell like a basement, but it does
10:25
smell like a beer you'd make yourself. That's nice. Nice aroma. Color's got a
10:30
little caramel a little bit of color It definitely not the Hellas beer The Hellas the light beers it not that You have this with some brown bread and schmutz you gonna be good to go That not bad The svickel the kettle beer this is the six day they doing good
10:49
These beers are actually pretty good. Like I feel bad I'm not chugging all these. Maybe I will after I finish this but yeah this is good. Not that one. Oh that
10:57
second one. That was good. This is a good one. And now on to our seventh beer of the
11:03
first week so finishing our first week of the Christmas beers so you know what to expect when
11:07
you're enjoying these beers because honestly so far five out of six of these I would drink again
11:12
all right so looking for day seven and as you know I'm having a hard time finding out here it's at
11:17
the top nice oh might be easy to get out too because it's like hey you've been drinking all
11:22
these beers real quick let me help you out here so we have the Kupfalsbräu
11:29
Helles, traditionally brewed in the heart of Germany, in Fulhu, Plankstatt. Wow
11:37
Never heard of Plankstatt. But they make a beer. They make a beer
11:41
And hey, you know what? Every time Germany Pride makes a beer, because they do, and it's great
11:45
I would feel this one's going to be like, yeah, I'm going to sit out at the beer garden
11:49
and drink with my buddy's beer. I don't know why. Like a hard day at work and going back to the beer garden afterwards, though it's winter
11:55
but let's see. So this is a Helles beer. it's 5.3% alcohol okay so open this bad boy up a lot of Hellas beers is for a lot of light beers
12:07
this first week like when you look on the side panel here it looks like there's a lot of Hefe
12:11
lights and like wheat beers but I only had the I think the one so far today and it was good well
12:17
two I guess yeah it is definitely Hellas the light number you can really see the lightness of it
12:22
it look I mean it doesn't look like a Budweiser or something like that but it is definitely a
12:26
light beer, light colored beer. Smells a little smells a little old like that first house we had at the beginning
12:38
Tastes a little old. I mean, I could drink it. I'll drink it
12:42
I drink when my buddies have to work, but yeah, this would not, this would be, it's not as bad
12:46
as the day two, but it's not very good. But I'll still drink it
12:50
So it's not that bad, but yeah. If we're looking to review from your
12:54
first week of your brewer's advent calendar from all these german beers that you get at costco
13:00
i will say by far i mean the best was this one the viener hoemann weiss beer the wheat beer
13:08
this is number one day two you will be hitting a high note because that is really good i'll
13:13
definitely be finishing this one this one's really good second place also excellent i was very
13:19
surprised by is the schwarze block the black beer this was actually pretty good i like this one
13:24
a lot too. I will drink some more to that. For some people in the acquired taste, if you like
13:30
your Guinness's or your Stouts, the Schwarz beer is going to be for you. So that's a good one. And
13:34
then the one I will never ever look at again and never ever ever want to taste again is this Alms
13:41
beer because this is straight trash. Like this is garbage. I'm gonna actually throw this down there
13:46
Gross! I know, I know it's a sin to throw away beer and waste beer but that beer was a waste. So
13:53
So your week one winners are right here. This is what you want to make sure you're enjoying
13:58
Okay, so hope this helps. We'll be back next week with week two's beer selections
14:03
from the Brewer's Advent Calendar that either you got at Costco or somebody got it for you
14:08
or someplace, because these are kind of a fun thing to do. Bye
