Choosing Fishing Rods Made Simple
May 14, 2026
Choosing fishing rods for specific techniques can improve your success on the water fast. In this quick fishing tip, Matt Becker explains why rod action, length and power matter. Although two rods may look identical, they can perform completely differently. Consequently, using the wrong setup can hurt casting accuracy, bait action and landing percentage. Becker breaks down two different rod setups and explains how each rod works for specific techniques.

Jerkbait Rod Setup
First, Becker discusses his jerkbait setup. He uses a 6-foot-10 medium fast-action rod designed for twitch-style presentations. Because jerkbait fishing often requires downward rod movements, a shorter rod helps prevent the rod tip from hitting the water or the boat. The fast rod action creates sharper bait movement. Every twitch transfers directly into the jerkbait, which helps the lure dart aggressively. Becker also explains why rod length plays a major role in comfort and efficiency. A properly matched rod allows anglers to work baits naturally while maintaining control throughout the retrieve.
Lipless Rod Setup
Next, Becker compares his lipless crankbait setup. Unlike the jerkbait rod, this setup allows more bend throughout the blank. The softer action helps anglers rip lipless crankbaits from grass while maintaining pressure on hooked fish. The rod also absorbs surges during the fight, which helps keep fish pinned. Becker explains why moderate fast rod action works well for moving baits like lipless crankbaits and vibrating jigs.
Why Rod Length and Action Matter
Rod action and rod length can completely change how a bait performs in the water. The right setup helps anglers create better lure movement, maintain control and land more fish consistently. Shorter rods often work better for downward presentations like jerkbaits. Meanwhile, longer rods can improve casting distance and help anglers control moving baits more effectively. Rod action determines how quickly the rod loads and transfers energy during retrieves and hooksets. Becker explains that choosing fishing rods for specific techniques allows the rod to do more of the work, which allows anglers to fish more efficiently Properly matched rods also help anglers keep fish pinned during the fight and improve overall hookup percentages.
