Hello and welcome to another trip report and good afternoon from a very humid and warm
0:12
Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia. Today I'm traveling up to Bangkok on Thai Airways
0:19
777-300. It's always a novelty to get a wide body aircraft on a short route and there are lots of
0:25
opportunities to do that in Asia. This is just one of them. Anyway, let's go check it out and find
0:30
out what it's like. Kuala Lumpur's airport is modern and clean but there's something strange
0:35
on the tarmac here. Nobody actually knows who these Boeing 747 aircraft belong to. A cargo
0:42
airline seems the like the owner but they've yet to prove ownership. Perhaps the largest piece of
0:47
airport lost property ever? There are actually several places to eat land side at Kuala Lumpur
0:54
which is great if you're transferring like me and have to collect your bags
0:58
Check-in has a special business class line. There's only a very short queue and it takes no more than five minutes to get me on my way to departures
1:06
Thai Airways also hand out special fast-track invitations for immigration, which makes passport control very easy here
1:24
Thai depart from the midfield terminal called Satellite Terminal A and there's a free transit
1:30
to get you the half mile or so across to where you need to be
1:42
This terminal is bright and airy but I won't explore too much as I'm heading off to the
1:46
Thai Lounge here. The Royal Silk Lounge is Thai's business class facility
1:52
The entrance is very inviting, apart from this creepy cardboard cutout. My business class ticket is enough to get me in
2:02
The lounge is small, Kuala Lumpur is only an outstation for Thai airways after all
2:07
but pleasant enough to spend an hour or so. There are good views too, and isn't Vietnam Airlines livery fantastic
2:15
There's a limited range of alcohol, not that I'll be drinking today, but a much better range of hot food ranging from small bites up to a full meal
2:23
Everything in the lounge is self-service. There's also some cheap pot noodle type snacks and a good range of soft drinks and little desserts
2:38
Part of this lounge is roped off, I assume for VIPs or people who may be connecting onwards
2:52
from Bangkok in first class. My one big complaint about this lounge is there weren't enough
2:57
powerpoints and that something even the most basic lounge should have A quick check of Flightradar24 shows me my aircraft is arriving soon
3:11
and I'm able to track it all the way down the runway and watch it land. That's my cue to head for the gate, and I'm quite excited to try out Thai
3:20
They're a new airline for me, and grabbing a long-haul business class product on a short route is always a novelty
3:26
I'll let you know what this costs by the way at the end of the video. I love all the engagement with you guys that I get on Twitter and Instagram where I live blog all my adventures
3:38
So if you don't follow me yet, go and join thousands of others and make sure you're part of the crowd
3:45
It looks like they weren't expecting me. Nobody greeted me at the door. So anyway, this is Ty's business class which you'll find on Long Haul Routes
3:54
it's a one-to-one configuration and you'll notice how the window seats are staggered between being
3:59
flush against the window and ones which are truly aisle seats. The window seats have more privacy
4:14
I like the presentation of the cabin and there's also an orchid waiting at every business class
4:19
seat a nice touch. There's plenty of room overhead for bags and the low density
4:24
seating arrangement means there's no competition for bin space. These seats come with a three-point seat belt just like in a car. It's kind of weird having
4:33
this on a plane. A hot towel is handed out which is very welcome. I've been
4:38
travelling all day having arrived on Melindo from Bali earlier on. The crew
4:43
worked really hard to see to everyone and even offered to take my picture. I
4:48
I didn't ask, so that's a nice gesture of them. There's also a pre-departure drink, which is much more appealing than the sight of my neighbour's feet
4:57
and we haven't even taken off yet. Menus are available, but I'll show you the food choices after take-off
5:18
Thank you
6:00
No the podcast is mentioned This channel is 8 and 8 The first podcast requires taking too many videos After a quick and powerful departure from Kuala Lumpur
6:32
we head due north towards Bangkok. Here's the route for today's flight. It'll cover
6:38
773 miles at 37,000 feet and it'll take around two hours. The business class bathrooms are nicely appointed and you'll notice the orchids scattered in
6:50
here too. The toiletries are very nice and there's also complimentary eau de toilette
6:56
which I'm surprised to see on a short route. The entertainment screen is large and in high definition and comes with two USB ports, which
7:05
is great for charging your devices. Storage for your shoes is under the Ottoman footstool
7:11
The buttons to operate the seat are all very intuitive, but they're at elbow height and
7:15
I found myself pressing them accidentally. They should really be better placed in my opinion
7:23
The seat has quite a few lights, including a powerful reading light and of course there's
7:28
somewhere to hang your jacket. A side pocket provides storage for magazines or smaller items
7:38
The table folds down from vertical as you can see here. I like this setup as it can be
7:42
swung out to allow you to leave your seat, which saves having to wait for your table
7:47
to be cleared. It doesn't however come closer to you, the seat moves to the table rather
7:51
than the other way around. The seat's really comfortable in all positions, my favourite
7:56
was this lounging setup. The entertainment can be controlled by touchscreen or remote, and there's a fair selection
8:09
although I didn't bother much with it on this flight. The remote also doubles as a moving map, by the way
8:17
Here's the menu. I'll shut up here so you can browse in peace, or skip ahead if reading menus isn't your
8:53
My dinner is served promptly and is presented neatly something I noticed is quite consistent on Asian Airlines The main course is Samrab Thai which is stir chicken with a Thai omelette Cheesecake stuffed rice flour and fruit
9:22
make up my dessert and you can also see my salmon starter here too. All of the
9:27
food was of a good standard, not the best I've ever had on a plane but above
9:31
average and there was nothing I disliked. One thing I particularly liked was the very strong coffees Ty served to finish off the
9:40
meal service. Mood lighting can be easily overdone but I think Ty got it right here
9:53
My seat also converts into a bed, although I won't be needing it today
9:59
Before landing, Ty displayed a helpful arrivals video and displayed connecting gates on the
10:04
entertainment handsets, which is a very good idea and beats listening to a flight attendant
10:09
firing off dozens of gates for everyone on board. After a couple of hours of flight, we're lined up to land in Bangkok, where the local
10:17
time is around 10pm. So, Thai business, it's not a perfect product by any means
10:40
I found little faults with the lounge and the seat, but I did enjoy the flight and would be more than happy to fly them long haul if the price was right
10:48
If you want to try this little flight for yourself, it will set you back around £140 one way
10:54
That's about $185 US dollars. Personally, I think that's worth it for the novelty value
11:00
And don't forget you collect more frequent flyer miles in business than economy
11:05
There are loads of opportunities to fly long haul wide body aircraft in Asia on short routes and Bangkok is a particular hotspot
11:13
A little research can definitely pay off. And that is it for another report
11:22
