hello this is chris with touring.com and
0:03
today i'm going to talk about fire for
0:05
my 72 hour kit there's a number of ways
0:07
to create fire obviously you can use a
0:08
match or a lighter if you have that but
0:10
if those run out say you're
0:12
you know you're creating a fire every
0:13
day or you're not having luck with the
0:15
fire you want something that's going to
0:16
last a little longer you could use the
0:18
old uh
0:19
frontier way it was a flint and still
0:21
take the metal and you strike it against
0:23
the rock and it creates a spark
0:26
and then obviously there's newer ways
0:28
now
0:29
you could use a
0:30
the magnesium stick with the with the
0:33
again with this metal striker
0:35
and it creates sparks that way
0:37
the the problem with with these is
0:41
you can create the spark but then you
0:43
need
0:43
to start to hold
0:46
to catch on an ember okay
0:48
and the ways that the way the
0:49
frontiersmen did that
0:51
is with the container like this is a
0:53
metal container with a hole in the top
0:56
of it
0:57
and what they do is they'd roll up
0:58
cotton and put it inside
1:01
they would then put this over a fire
1:03
and
1:05
and with no oxygen
1:07
all the moisture and stuff would burn
1:08
off and all that would be left is is
1:10
carbon so this is carbon you could also
1:13
if you don't have cotton you could put
1:14
small uh
1:16
wood chips in here and get the same
1:17
effect and what this will do is
1:19
is this will hold a spark
1:22
so let's unwrap a little bit of this
1:28
so you can see this
1:32
then get your uh your classic flint
1:34
steeler you can use this
1:42
and you can see it already
1:44
that really holds a spark and this will
1:47
just keep burning away until it burns
1:48
away all the
1:50
the carbon
1:52
and then you can put this in with your
1:54
uh
1:57
your tinder or whatever
1:59
to get a fire started
2:01
so this is a really
2:03
quick and lightweight way
2:06
carry some of this around with you
2:10
and this tin
2:11
carry this around
2:14
i usually carry this around you could
2:15
always find a flint
2:17
you know find a rock that'll make a
2:20
spark i said look it
2:23
it's still burning
2:30
and this will just keep going until all
2:32
the carbon burns up
2:37
really lightweight really easy way to
2:38
hold a spark so you can start a fire so
2:40
you might want to think about something
2:41
like this for your emergency kit a nice
2:43
backup
2:44
to matches and a really easy way to
2:46
start fire
2:47
it'll hold a spark for a really long
2:49
time
2:53
and it's really lightweight like i said
2:55
this is cotton rolls
2:56
where you could put wood chips in here
2:58
and get the same effect
