do you think
0:02
that as someone who was a black head
0:04
coach in the nfl
0:06
the experience was the same the
0:08
opportunity was the same were you
0:09
treated the same were you given the same
0:11
um
0:13
chances or the same opportunities as a
0:16
white head coach is it a different
0:18
experience as a black head coach oh
0:20
absolutely first time you say your mom
0:22
and dad
0:24
but it's much harder when you're a
0:26
minority coach because you carry the
0:28
weight of all the other minority coaches
0:30
because you need to do well you need to
0:32
win if you don't uh to me it just makes
0:35
it harder for the next minority coach
0:36
that's coming up behind you
0:38
i was in oakland you know one year as
0:40
they head coach there
0:42
eight and eight eight eight coaches
0:43
normally don't get fired but i did but i
0:46
understood that because al davis had
0:48
passed the person that hired me his son
0:50
took over
0:52
i knew he probably wanted to do
0:53
different so you can understand that you
0:56
go to cleveland you become pro
0:58
football's writers coach of the year
1:00
you're told they're going to do
1:01
everything that makes you successful
1:03
they're going to give you everything you
1:04
need to to have a great team
1:07
all people got to do is go check the
1:09
press conference and see what i said
1:11
um i made it very clear that i came
1:13
there to change the organization to get
1:15
it to winning uh within a month and a
1:18
half of being there we stripped the team
1:20
down i never knew that was going to
1:22
happen
1:23
i never knew what the plan was i was
1:26
locked out of things i was not
1:29
led to see things i didn't have any
1:32
input
1:33
so that was hard so what kind of jobs
1:35
should be locked out of
1:37
well formerly a head coach would be let
1:40
be allowed to be important the thing
1:42
that deals with your team anytime you're
1:43
building a football team the head coach
1:45
wants to know what's being put on this
1:47
team so i was locked out of the
1:48
information that led to
1:50
how the team was being put together how
1:52
we were going to draft the team how
1:54
we're going what players we're going to
1:55
draft and then
1:57
i i constantly had to fight on those
2:00
things and because that began to show me
2:03
that this was not
2:05
what i had signed up for do you think
2:07
you were hired to lose
2:09
well absolutely i think that's obvious i
2:12
mean no minority coach takes a job
2:15
or puts himself in a position to lose
2:18
you can't especially a two-time head
2:20
coach after being fired at eight and
2:22
eight so i'm definitely gonna take
2:24
another job that's gonna lead me to
2:26
losing uh so there's no question that i
2:29
think they strategically target
2:32
to be the face of what they were looking
2:35
for
2:36
and that's how that that's how that came
2:38
about
2:40
you were
2:41
1 in 31 and then you were offered an
2:43
extension
2:46
yes i was offered an extension that
2:47
nobody else knew but you would have to
2:49
ask the haslams about that i can i
2:52
couldn't tell you that
2:53
i couldn't tell you i was off an
2:54
extension
2:55
but i was
2:57
and i think i was getting extension uh
2:59
to
3:00
slow things down i think people knew
3:03
that i was very disappointed
3:05
uh it was a hard time
3:07
for me personally
3:09
i
3:10
sat there with my wife while mr haslam
3:13
him and his wife in front of my agent
3:15
said we hate what we did to you
3:17
put you in a tough spot and we're trying
3:19
to make it right so here is a contract
3:22
extension and we're going to do this
3:23
right but when you look at it it was
3:25
never told to the public nobody ever
3:28
knew
3:29
and so to me that was that's like hush
3:31
money in my opinion
3:33
that was to get me quiet and not say
3:36
anything but at the time when you're
3:38
going through those type of dramatic
3:40
things
3:41
you want to believe that people say okay
3:44
we are going to fix this we are going to
3:45
do the right thing and people forget
3:47
there's a lot of coaches and coaches
3:49
families that i'm responsible for so
3:51
it's not like you could just get up and
3:52
quit it's not like you can just leave
3:55
they
3:56
they don't have the same security that i
3:58
had so you feel like you need to fight
4:01
some things out and if people are
4:02
telling you that hey look we're going to
4:04
try to get this right we're going to put
4:05
some things in place to make it better
4:08
they made some changes within the
4:10
executive staff you started to say you
4:13
probably feel like there's a little hope
4:14
but there's also a little concern that
4:16
it's not going to get right a lot of
4:18
people are stuck on this idea that
4:20
the the browns and the dolphins wanted
4:23
to lose what kind of things did the
4:25
browns do
4:26
to try and lose
4:29
well you don't understand when people
4:32
say try to lose you got to make it look
4:34
right right i mean you can't like that's
4:38
tanking is illegal
4:40
you know that's a
4:41
quote-unquote uh slap against the shield
4:44
and so it's all hyped up and so what
4:48
people don't understand tanking no
4:50
player
4:51
is gonna intentionally go to a game and
4:54
not try to play his best he would get
4:56
hurt so i get a little disappointed when
4:59
people use the word tanking because it's
5:02
not tanking for players you can't tell a
5:04
player to tank you can't tell a coach to
5:06
tank because nowhere in a player's
5:08
contract or his value
5:10
is that going to work for him is it
5:12
going to work for a coach but when uh
5:15
organization has a strategic plan
5:17
to build a team that doesn't have the
5:20
best chance to be competitive
5:22
okay when they don't have the best team
5:24
to put them in position to win
5:26
that's truly what that's all about and
5:29
so
5:29
that's how those things work you you
5:32
build a team that doesn't have the best
5:34
chance to win week in week out
5:36
they know exactly what those things are
5:38
that you need in order to be successful
5:41
and you play and you compete and you're
5:43
in games which is very hard to win games
5:47
you know and people don't people act
5:48
like they don't get that all you gotta
5:50
do is really look at the team and look
5:51
at the veterans and key positions and
5:54
you'll figure it out pretty quickly i
5:56
mean 2017 we had three quarterbacks that
5:59
were on a roster that never won an nfl
6:01
game in their career
6:03
so that's got to tell you something were
6:05
there any sort of incentives to make the
6:08
team worse
6:10
there was an incentivized plan there was
6:12
a four-year plan that i did not
6:14
understand
6:16
that was brought to me
6:18
i have been there for about a month and
6:20
a half but it's presented as a bonus
6:22
structure
6:24
all coaches head coaches get some type
6:26
of bonus whether it's
6:28
perks or bonus to this bonus for that
6:31
you know and you can't you're not
6:33
supposed to pay coaches international
6:35
football league bonuses for wins and
6:37
losses that's what your contract does
6:39
uh but this was put together in an
6:42
incentivized plan based on things that
6:45
didn't have anything to do with winning
6:47
in the first two years aggregate coach
6:50
aggregate rankings um
6:53
situations where you
6:55
you could uh
6:58
uh
6:59
and then all bonuses must be nfl
7:01
approved and this wasn't
7:03
but more so than that i mean the things
7:06
that were on this particular list had
7:08
nothing to do in my opinion with winning
7:10
and losing and winning and losing was
7:12
not talked about in the first two years
7:14
but yet
7:15
winning and losing is talked about in
7:17
year
7:18
three and four so that's got to tell you
7:20
something so if you're not asked to win
7:22
here one and two how can you expect to
7:24
win in your three and four that have
7:26
this big number for winning so
7:28
when i knew about this i immediately
7:30
pushed back because i didn't understand
7:33
it uh to me it had nothing to do with
7:36
football in the first two years
7:38
aggregate rankings i mean in order for
7:41
you to be a pretty good team you got to
7:42
be ranked pretty high in some some of
7:44
the rankings and we were supposed to be
7:46
in the bottom half of the league so
7:48
all those things told me and i you got
7:50
to put all these things together and it
7:52
took me a little time because this is a
7:54
bonus structure i've never seen before
7:56
and i told myself after i saw the team
7:58
started to understand a little bit more
8:00
then wait a minute this is
8:02
it's not about winning this is about
8:05
guys staying together
8:07
uh probably not me pushing back against
8:10
them because i'm trying to win
8:12
i again i'd take you back to my press
8:14
conference everything i said because i
8:16
came there to turn cleveland around i
8:18
didn't come to the league so
8:20
here i am sitting here
8:23
in this opportunity which i thought was
8:25
going to be a tremendous opportunity for
8:26
me my family and all the coaches
8:29
families that i brought and here i am in
8:31
this
8:32
unbelievable nightmare so you do
8:35
everything you can to push back up
8:37
against it and fight it i went on record
8:39
with jimmy and saying i don't want this
8:42
i don't want your money it's not about a
8:44
bonus for me who gets a bonus
8:47
after going 1-15 if anything you get a
8:49
pink slip and you go out the door and he
8:52
told me i'll never forget it he said
8:54
this had to be the toughest year of your
8:55
life but you did an incredible job and
8:58
i'm looking at him going we mean an
9:00
incredible job 1-15 is not an incredible
9:02
job
9:03
and um on we went you know where we i
9:06
proceeded to push them on some things
9:09
that needed to change if i was gonna be
9:11
around because i didn't think there's no
9:13
way a coach is gonna be around if you
9:15
continue to lose at the rate that we
9:17
were losing did you fight back after you
9:19
were let go
9:21
absolutely i did i um
9:24
you for my first thing was but during
9:27
the time when this was all going on i
9:28
let the league know that i think that
9:30
the browns wasn't trying to win because
9:32
again like i said i was a second time
9:34
nfl head coach and that needed to win
9:38
yeah i fired at eight and eight so i'm
9:40
sure not gonna sit there at oh and
9:43
whatever and think things are going
9:44
great so i called
9:46
the commissioner's office and told him i
9:48
didn't think they were trying to win and
9:49
he said hey look i'll i'll take a look
9:51
into this well there wasn't much look
9:54
into it in my opinion i just think it's
9:56
slip service and so
9:58
when this was all over i immediately uh
10:01
wanted to
10:03
use the constitution and bylaws of the
10:05
league i tried to do everything the
10:06
right way i tried to use what they said
10:09
the process you should go through in
10:10
order to report
10:13
things that were
10:14
fraudulent because i thought from again
10:16
it was i thought my contract everything
10:19
that i was told was totally different
10:21
than what it was going to be
10:23
everything that i was dealing with as
10:25
far as reporting things to the league
10:27
and what they're supposed to do because
10:29
it says if you bring fraud
10:31
to the league then the league is to
10:34
investigate it you can go read that in
10:36
their constitution and bylaws
10:38
and what i found that
10:40
they was not going to investigate we
10:43
they immediately
10:44
pushed everything over into arbitration
10:46
where i lost the case in arbitration
10:49
do you think that was a cover-up
10:52
well i mean in my mind absolutely i mean
10:55
they're not going to admit um their
10:57
wrongdoing but like i said i back up my
11:01
disappointment is today i hear that
11:03
they're going to investigate
11:05
the situation for brian flores which i
11:07
think is great
11:08
but
11:09
this is totally different i brought them
11:12
information there is a paper trail i
11:14
have
11:15
documentation i have anything and
11:18
everything that a person would want and
11:20
need to look at to say wow
11:22
i mean between conversations uh
11:26
emails you name it everything and said
11:28
here
11:29
and i get no opportunity to even have
11:32
them go find out what i'm saying is true
11:35
so that's got to tell you something
11:36
right there
11:37
do you
11:38
plan on or have you talked to brian's
11:40
lawyers and also do you plan on joining
11:42
his lawsuit
11:44
i'd rather not comment on that at this
11:45
time do you think that the last two
11:47
years they've made
11:48
when they've stated that they support
11:50
these movements and they are fighting
11:52
for for diversity and against injustice
11:54
do you think any of that is genuine
11:57
well i think some of it is but you've
11:59
got to start where you are first right i
12:02
mean if you want to show that you're
12:03
being really genuine you would start to
12:05
fix the biggest and the major problem
12:08
that everybody sees which is in your own
12:10
house
12:11
is these the comment on everybody else's
12:13
things and and fix and make comments
12:16
because it doesn't touch you right it's
12:19
very easy to
12:20
kind of hide behind that but if you were
12:23
to start where you are and fix it and
12:26
show people that i'm going to make a
12:28
difference part of your job as a coach
12:32
on the collegiate level is not just to
12:34
coach football but also to inspire these
12:36
these young men to be the best young men
12:39
they can be and also to go after their
12:41
dreams and
12:43
you're a living breathing example of
12:45
somebody who went after their dreams
12:47
but for lack of a better term
12:49
got screwed
12:51
how do you have and
12:53
racism seems to play a role in that how
12:55
do you have that conversation with these
12:57
young men how do you tell them like hey
12:59
it's going to be harder for you hey it
13:00
is was harder for me but like go after
13:02
your dreams go try to be an nfl coach go
13:04
do these things how do you tell them
13:06
that when what they're seeing in front
13:07
of them is that the world is not fair
13:09
for them and and they see it they see it
13:12
through the experiences of people they
13:13
can touch and people they know in their
13:14
own coach
13:16
and that is a great point lauren but you
13:18
have to have hope right
13:20
um you have to without hope
13:23
what is life right so
13:25
i'm never going to tell a young man not
13:27
to go chase
13:29
his his aspiration or the goal that he
13:31
knows that he wants especially if it's
13:33
coaching or whatever
13:34
because i think you have to do that but
13:36
at the same time you also have to
13:37
understand
13:38
the pitfalls you know you have to listen
13:41
to the experience and make sure you
13:43
don't make the same mistakes if i could
13:45
go back
13:46
and be the younger hugh there's a lot of
13:49
things i would do different
13:50
i wouldn't be as trusting i probably
13:52
wouldn't be as
13:54
bullish as i am about my skill because
13:57
what happens with coaches
13:59
and you just watch the jobs that the
14:01
minority coaches get
14:03
when we take it we are such alphas we
14:06
have that mentality that we're going to
14:08
show you
14:09
we're going to go get it done but i
14:11
would say to every coach
14:13
make sure you you channel that a little
14:16
bit because if the contract's not right
14:19
you may not have the chance to
14:22
dictate how to
14:24
make it work
14:25
and so there's so many things that i've
14:27
learned
14:28
going through this process that would
14:29
never happen to me again that way
14:32
but at the same time you have to make
14:34
sure that
14:35
you're put in a situation where
14:37
everybody is trying to help you win yeah
14:40
and that's what it's supposed to be when
14:42
you become a head coach the people you
14:44
work for
14:45
they're about yeah
14:47
yeah and having you be successful and
14:50
having your values soar because that
14:52
means they soar they're not trying to
14:53
bring they shouldn't be trying to bring
14:54
you down
