What are the best Tank sets in ESO Update 50?
In this guide I cover the strongest 5-piece gear sets for ESO Tanks in 2026, including for Main Tanks, Off Tanks and dungeon Tanking. With Class Masteries, Werewolf changes and new group buffs changing the support meta, some old favourites are making a comeback while others are losing their place. These are the sets worth considering in ESO Update 50.

Update 50 has shaken things up for ESO
0:02
tanks. With class masteries, werewolf
0:05
improvements, and all of the new group
0:07
buffs available in the game, this means
0:09
that many of the sets we've relied on
0:10
for years simply aren't as valuable as
0:12
they once were. At the same time, other
0:15
sets have become even stronger than
0:16
ever. So, in this guide, we're going to
0:18
break down the best tank sets for update
0:20
50, covering where to get each set, how
0:22
it works, how to use it, and most
0:25
importantly, why it's worth using in
0:27
today's ESO.
0:33
First up is Lucent Echoes, a heavy armor
0:36
set from the Lucent Citadel trial in the
0:38
Gold Road chapter. This set increases
0:41
your group's critical damage and healing
0:43
done while you're above 50% health. But,
0:45
if your health drops too low, it instead
0:48
switches over and gives you a huge 20%
0:50
damage reduction instead, making it an
0:52
excellent combination of offense and
0:55
survivability. This is going to be one
0:57
of the most common main tank sets in
0:59
update 50. Although, there are a few
1:01
question marks around just how valuable
1:03
it might end up being. With groups
1:05
having access to easy major minor force,
1:08
six medium armor, minor brittle, and
1:11
then the new warden class mastery
1:12
providing major brittle, many groups are
1:14
already getting very close to the
1:16
critical damage cap. In those
1:18
situations, Lucent Echoes really kind of
1:21
acts more as a safety net, helping to
1:24
cover any gaps in that major brittle
1:26
uptime. However, if your group has
1:28
Nightblade damage dealers, their
1:30
increased critical damage cap means
1:32
Lucent Echoes becomes even more valuable
1:34
and remains one of the strongest support
1:36
sets available. Overall, this is an
1:38
incredibly strong main tank set for all
1:40
content, especially if you're in
1:42
organized groups who want more critical.
1:44
It's good for that defensive effect when
1:46
you are the main tank, and it really
1:48
helps when your health drops low, making
1:50
it very comfortable for the actual
1:52
wearer of the set. Next up is
1:54
Pearlescent Ward, a heavy armor set from
1:56
the Dread Sail Reef trial in the High
1:58
Isle chapter, Pearlescent provides your
2:00
group with a unique weapon and spell
2:02
damage buff simply just by wearing the
2:05
set. Allies just need to be within
2:06
range, and it makes it one of the
2:08
easiest support sets in the game to use.
2:11
And if your group members start to die,
2:13
the set also grants increasing damage
2:15
reduction to help your team recover from
2:17
difficult situations. Because the damage
2:20
buff is unique, Pearlescent remains one
2:22
of the strongest and most reliable sets
2:24
available in update 50 and pretty much
2:26
locked into the meta. The fact that it's
2:28
just a passive aura means there's no
2:31
proc conditions to worry about, no
2:33
cooldowns to manage, and no effort
2:35
required to maintain the buff. It simply
2:37
just works. That makes Pearlescent an
2:40
excellent set virtually in every type of
2:42
content, whether that's dungeons or
2:43
arenas all the way up to veteran trials.
2:46
But it really shines for off tanks,
2:48
where it remains one of the most common
2:49
and valuable support sets available. The
2:52
reason why this is is because an off
2:54
tank will often need a heavy armor set,
2:56
and they will be frequently pairing this
2:57
with medium or light armor sets. So this
2:59
is the one heavy set that they will
3:01
definitely find good use on an off tank.
3:04
It is just a fantastic choice of a set,
3:06
especially for progression groups, with
3:08
the additional damage reduction helping
3:10
groups survive mistakes and recover from
3:12
difficult encounters. Crimson Oath's
3:14
Rive is one of the best early tank sets
3:16
available considering it's fairly easy
3:18
to obtain and remains an excellent
3:20
option even for end-game players. This
3:23
heavy armor set comes from the
3:25
Dreadsailor dungeon in the Waking Flame
3:27
DLC and provides some strong defensive
3:30
stats for you as the wearer. But the
3:32
real value comes from its unique effect.
3:35
Whenever you gain a major or minor buff
3:37
from things like potions, poisons, or
3:39
skill usage while enemies are nearby,
3:42
Crimson Oath reduces their armor, making
3:44
it much easier for your group to reach
3:46
the penetration cap and deal maximum
3:48
damage. Better yet, the set can be
3:50
maintained essentially with a 100%
3:53
uptime. That makes Crimson Oath an
3:55
outstanding dungeon set, especially
3:57
since it affects multiple enemies and
3:59
requires very little effort to maintain.
4:01
It is also a fantastic choice for ad
4:03
pulls in trials, and with update 50, I
4:06
could even see some groups choosing this
4:08
over Alkosh. Traditionally, many groups
4:10
have relied on a damage dealer to
4:12
provide Alkosh, but moving that
4:14
responsibility onto the tank allows
4:16
those damage dealers to focus entirely
4:18
on damage. Z'orian's Masterpiece is a
4:21
light armor set that comes from the
4:23
Lucent Citadel trial in the Gold Road
4:25
chapter. And because it's a light armor
4:27
set, you would generally want to run
4:29
this on the weapons and the jewelry as a
4:31
tank. This set provides a permanent aura
4:34
around you, increasing the maximum
4:36
magicka and stamina of yourself and
4:38
nearby group members. In ESO, increasing
4:41
your maximum stats actually translates
4:43
into more damage. This effectively acts
4:46
as a group DPS increase. It also
4:49
provides magicka recovery for yourself,
4:51
which is especially valuable for tanks
4:53
who rely heavily on magicka skills. The
4:55
reason this set is becoming more
4:57
interesting now is because many groups
4:59
are likely to have an Arcanist healer or
5:01
somebody maintaining extremely high
5:04
Major Force uptime through the new class
5:06
mastery system. I was able to achieve a
5:08
96% uptime on a werewolf tank, so a
5:11
healer supporting an entire group should
5:13
have no trouble keeping this buff active
5:15
almost permanently. What this means is
5:17
many groups will no longer need to rely
5:19
on the Aggressive Horn ultimate for
5:21
Major Force. However, Aggressive Horn
5:24
also provides a 10% increase to max
5:27
magicka and stamina, and losing that
5:29
part of the ultimate would normally
5:30
represent a loss in damage for your
5:32
group. Z'orian's Masterpiece helps
5:34
compensate for that loss, making it a
5:37
very useful support set for organized
5:38
groups, and one that I think will see
5:40
much more use in update 50. Turning Tide
5:44
and Stone Hulk's Domination are two
5:46
heavy armor sets that focus on providing
5:49
major vulnerability, increasing the
5:51
damage that enemies take. Turning Tide
5:53
comes from Shipwright's Regret in the
5:55
Ascending Tide DLC, and it's more of an
5:58
AoE focused option. It applies major
6:00
vulnerability to multiple enemies after
6:03
you block an attack and then bash to
6:05
trigger the set. Stone Hulk's domination
6:08
from the Nashkaldish dungeon in the
6:10
Feast of Shadows DLC is more specialized
6:13
for single target fights. It applies a
6:15
single target major vulnerability
6:17
whenever you taunt an enemy, but it does
6:19
offer a higher uptime potential. These
6:21
sets are very situational and depend on
6:24
your group's composition. If your group
6:26
already has sources of major
6:28
vulnerability, they become far less
6:29
valuable. But if your group doesn't,
6:31
they are both excellent support options.
6:34
The really interesting thing, however,
6:35
is the Necromancer tank. Thanks to their
6:38
new class mastery, Necromancers can
6:40
increase the duration of major
6:41
vulnerability by 50%. This not only
6:44
extends Colossus to an 18-second
6:46
duration, but it also dramatically
6:48
improves the uptime of Turning Tide and
6:51
Stone Hulk, allowing a Necromancer tank
6:53
to provide permanent major vulnerability
6:55
uptimes all by themselves. So, while
6:57
these sets are situational, they become
7:00
incredibly powerful, especially if
7:01
you're playing a Necromancer tank. Claw
7:04
of Yolnakriin is one of those old tank
7:06
favorites that just refuses to die. This
7:09
heavy armor set comes from the Sunspire
7:11
trial in the Elsweyr chapter, and it
7:13
grants minor courage to your group
7:15
whenever you taunt an enemy, providing a
7:17
nice damage boost with an extremely high
7:19
uptime and range. Now, for a long time,
7:22
this set has really fell out of favor.
7:24
Arcanists and the Scribing system made
7:26
minor courage easier to obtain from a
7:28
single skill, making an entire
7:30
five-piece set feel like a waste. And
7:32
that still may be the case, but with
7:34
some support sets losing value in update
7:36
50, I've started to see more discussion
7:39
around bringing Yolnakriin back. Not
7:41
because it's suddenly become an amazing
7:42
set again, but simply because it
7:44
provides minor courage to all 12 group
7:46
members from range with almost no effort
7:49
required and without needing anyone else
7:51
to think about maintaining the buff. I
7:53
still wouldn't recommend this set for
7:54
dungeons or arenas. There are much
7:56
better options available, but in trial
7:59
groups with a lack of reliable source of
8:01
minor courage, this old classic is
8:03
certainly worth taking into
8:04
consideration. Morag Tong in 2026.
8:09
Believe it or not, this old set might
8:11
actually be making a comeback. Available
8:13
from guild traders or the bruma elite
8:15
gear vendor in Cyrodiil, Morag Tong
8:18
causes enemies to take 10% more damage
8:20
from poison and disease damage whenever
8:22
you deal direct damage to them. Since
8:25
it's a medium armor set, tanks would
8:27
generally need to run this on weapons
8:29
and jewelry. I'll be honest, when I
8:31
first heard people talking about Morag
8:33
Tong, I was a bit skeptical. Where
8:35
exactly are we supposed to use this
8:36
thing? But in highly optimized trial
8:38
groups where necro- mancer damage
8:40
dealers are using blighted blastbones
8:42
and everyone is running poison glyphs,
8:44
this set actually starts to offer some
8:46
surprisingly good value. This definitely
8:48
isn't a set for the average group and
8:50
there's no guarantee that it will even
8:51
end up on a tank. It could just as
8:53
easily find its way onto a healer,
8:55
especially now things like major courage
8:57
can be provided elsewhere. But if you're
8:59
pushing end game content, it's probably
9:02
worth picking up a set now before
9:03
everyone suddenly remembers Morag Tong
9:05
exists and the price starts to shoot up.
9:08
Pillager's Profit is a light armor set
9:10
from the Dread Sail Reef trial in the
9:12
High Isle chapter and would need to be
9:14
used on the weapons and jewelry as a
9:15
tank. What this does is whenever you use
9:18
an ultimate while in combat, you return
9:20
a percentage of that ultimate cost back
9:23
to your group, making it one of the
9:24
strongest ultimate support sets in ESO.
9:27
Historically, Pillager's has almost
9:30
always been a healer set, but with
9:32
arcanist healers now capable of
9:33
maintaining major force through class
9:35
masteries, tanks are no longer tied down
9:38
to using the aggressive horn ultimate in
9:40
the same way that they used to be. That
9:42
opens the possibility of dedicated ulti
9:44
gen tanks, particularly off tanks, whose
9:47
primary job is simply to generate as
9:49
much ultimate as possible and feed it
9:50
back into the group. And that's where
9:53
nightblade and necromancer tanks become
9:55
especially useful. Nightblades already
9:57
have fantastic ultimate generation, and
9:59
now thanks to their class masteries,
10:01
they can generate even more. This
10:03
essentially turns them into ultimate
10:04
factories, allowing pillager's profit to
10:07
be activated incredibly frequently and
10:09
providing huge amounts of ultimate back
10:11
to the group. Now, there's no guarantee
10:13
that this becomes a mainstream tank
10:15
setup, and pillagers may still remain a
10:17
primary healer set, but I definitely
10:19
think update 50 opens the door for some
10:22
very interesting ulti gen tank builds,
10:25
especially for nightblades and
10:27
necromancer tanks. O Cases is a heavy
10:29
armor set from the Stone Garden dungeon,
10:32
and this grants ultimate to you and
10:34
three group members whenever you drink a
10:36
potion. And if you set up your build
10:38
with some potion cool down reduction,
10:40
you can activate it very consistently on
10:42
its 30-second cool down. Now, on paper,
10:44
only affecting four players might not
10:46
sound particularly impressive, and in
10:48
random groups, I probably wouldn't risk
10:50
using it or really recommend this set.
10:52
You have no control over who receives
10:54
the ultimate, and there's always the
10:55
risk of it being wasted if people are
10:57
already at the amount that they need for
10:59
their ultimate. But in organized
11:00
four-player groups, O Cases can be
11:02
incredibly powerful, especially when
11:05
everyone is coordinating their ultimate
11:06
usage. And where I think this set
11:08
becomes really interesting is in trial
11:10
ad pulls. By equipping O Cases during
11:13
easier waves of enemies, you can
11:15
essentially use it as a pre-buffing set,
11:18
feeding ultimate into your group and
11:20
ensuring everybody is ready for the next
11:22
boss or those much more dangerous ad
11:24
waves where having ultimate available
11:26
can make all the difference. Since O
11:28
Cases is also a pretty strong heavy
11:30
armor set with excellent defensive
11:32
stats. It's easy for tanks to wear this
11:34
without sacrificing any of their
11:36
survivability. War Machine is already a
11:39
set that occasionally finds its way onto
11:41
tanks, but I think with update 50, this
11:43
could make it even more popular.
11:45
Obtained from the Halls of Fabrication
11:47
trial in the Morrowind DLC, this set
11:49
grants major slayer to you and the six
11:51
closest group members whenever you use
11:53
an ultimate. Since the duration scales
11:55
with the amount of ultimate spent, it
11:57
works especially well with the ultimate
11:59
style builds we talked about earlier.
12:01
Particularly on nightblades or
12:03
necromancers with their incredible
12:05
ultimate generation. Every organized
12:07
group needs supports supplying major
12:09
slayer to the group, and with some
12:11
traditional support sets becoming less
12:13
important, I could definitely see War
12:15
Machine becoming a more common tank
12:17
option. In dungeons, this is very
12:18
straightforward, but in trials, things
12:20
become a little more complicated. Since
12:22
the set only affects the closest group
12:24
members, positioning becomes extremely
12:26
important, and groups often need to
12:28
organize themselves into stacks to make
12:30
sure everyone receives the buff. This
12:32
can occasionally make War Machine
12:34
awkward on a tank, especially when both
12:36
tanks are split up controlling different
12:38
enemies, but in the right group with
12:40
good coordination, it remains one of the
12:42
strongest damage support sets available.
12:44
Blessing of the Potentates is a little
12:47
different from the other sets that we've
12:48
looked at because it is technically only
12:50
a three-piece set usually worn on your
12:52
weapons and one piece of jewelry. This
12:54
is available from the guild traders or
12:56
the Golden Vendor in Cyrodiil. The
12:59
two-piece bonus is completely useless in
13:01
PvE, but the three-piece effect is where
13:04
things get very interesting as it
13:06
reduces the cost of your ultimate
13:07
abilities by 15%. If your group doesn't
13:11
particularly need a certain monster set,
13:13
Blessing of the Potentates becomes a
13:15
very interesting option. Being able to
13:18
fit this onto your main ultimate bar
13:20
gives you cheaper ultimate and
13:21
potentially more frequent ultimate
13:23
usage, making it a strong choice for
13:25
support focused builds and can be useful
13:27
on some ultimate setups that we spoke
13:29
about already. There are also a few sets
13:32
that I think are moving away or becoming
13:33
less useful for tanks in update 50, so
13:35
let's have a look at a few of those,
13:37
starting with Saxhleel Champion. This
13:40
set is effectively dead thanks to the
13:42
Arcanist class mastery, Inscribed Werve.
13:45
Groups can maintain incredibly high
13:47
major force uptime without needing
13:49
Saxhleel at all. So, I don't really see
13:52
any reason at all to run this gear set
13:54
anymore. Powerful Assault has already
13:56
become more of a healer set over the
13:58
last few years as well, and I think that
14:00
trend only continues. With werewolf
14:02
damage dealers potentially providing
14:03
major courage, healer gear options
14:05
become even more limited, making
14:07
Powerful Assault an even more natural
14:09
fit for them. As a tank, if you mostly
14:12
play in random groups, using PA just
14:14
risks overlapping the buff. And in
14:16
organized trials, there are usually much
14:18
stronger options for a tank where you
14:20
don't have to be really close to your
14:21
group to keep activating it. And then,
14:23
there's also Olorime. It was never
14:25
really a super common tank set in the
14:27
first place. It still has some very
14:29
niche use in dungeon compositions when
14:31
you're running one tank with three
14:33
damage dealers, but even there it starts
14:35
to lose value if one of those damage
14:37
dealers happens to be a werewolf. So,
14:40
that is everything for my ESO tank gear
14:42
guide for update 50. Coming soon, we'll
14:45
have more ESO build updates. We'll also
14:47
have a guide for monster sets, mythics,
14:49
and other gear. A big shout-out to all
14:51
of our patron members for supporting the
14:53
tank club, and thank you very much for
14:55
watching, and I'll see you next time.
14:57
Bye-bye for now.
