are about to do a 10-week summer body challenge for over 50s

So for every week for 10 weeks, we'll be talking about something

a different topic to do with losing weight, getting fit and staying healthy for the summer

and hopefully for the rest of our lives. Each of us are all going to do the same challenge

and we're going to bring you the same video each week. but because we're so different, you know, everybody's going to put a different spin on it

Everybody's going to, you know, eat different types of food. Everyone will do different types of exercise and they'll have a different view of looking at each of the topics

So it's well worth following each of us if you want to get some motivation or some inspiration

Over the 10 weeks, we'll be talking about topics like exercising, diets, you know, what we eat

We'll talk about cutting down on sugar, cutting down on processed foods, drinking more water, getting outside, you know, getting some fresh air

It's not just about what you're putting your body, you know, it's about a mindset as well

And I think getting outside always makes you feel better. We'll be talking about routines and starting to get into good habits so that you can keep it going after the 10 weeks

We'll be talking about juices and shakes and if they're good for you and what you can make and things like that

We'll be talking about cutting down on sugar. And we'll also be talking about socialising

So not just in a way of what can you eat or drink when you go socialising

but the fact that socialising is also good for your health. You know, if you're sitting in the house on your own

then you're more likely to reach for the crisps and the biscuits. But if you're out, you know, if you've joined a club or something with some friends

you're less likely to break your healthy eating goals. So we'll be talking about all those things over the next 10 weeks

Like I said, there'll be one topic each week that we'll be talking about. Each week we will be weighing in and showing you what we weigh

I'll be doing that before the end of this video. I'm going to get on the scales and show you what I weigh

Now just as a disclaimer none of us are health professionals You know we doing this just for ourselves basically So if you wanted to join in with any of the diets that were following

Now I just thought I'd give you a little bit of background on why I wanted to do this

I've had my own health challenges recently. I think I've mentioned before in videos that I'm type 2 diabetic

I've been type 2 diabetic for about 14 years now. And my last, I'll go for a checkup once a year and they do what's called an HBA 1

blood test which checks the amount of glucose that's in your bloodstream as an average over the last eight weeks

Now when I was first diagnosed as being diabetic, my HBA1C was at 51

A normal HBA 1C is between 20 and 41.9. So 51 I was diabetic

At my last HBA 1C, which was about three weeks ago, it was 80

it was 84. It's, you know, that is the highest it's ever been since I was diagnosed

I have gone up and down but it never been at 84 and that very worrying But what more worrying is some of the I not going to say side effects of type 2 diabetes but some of the issues that crop up with type 2 diabetes one of them is something called diabetic neuropathy

And it's where you get nerve damage in your hands and your feet

I think it can get it elsewhere in your body, but it's mainly your hands and your feet

and I've found that over, I'd say, the last year, my toes in the top half of my feet are going numb

which is, you know, that is very worrying. I can still feel my toes, but they do feel like they're going numb

They feel a little bit spongy. And the pain in my legs and my feet through the night is horrendous

I sometimes can't even stand the feel of it like the blanket or the sheet

on my feet because it hurts that much. I've recently discovered I've also got osteoarthritis

which is basically wear and tear, you know, it's something you get when you get older but apparently it is linked to

type 2 diabetes. So I've got that issue and I've got it mainly in my feet as well

so that's a double a double whammy for the pain in my feet. So the thing they advocate for both type 2 diabetes

to get that under control and to keep your osteoarthritis manager, is to lose weight and exercise

So this 10-week summer body challenge is ideal for me. If anybody else has got type 2 diabetes or osteoarthritis

you might find that helpful too. But remember, I'm not a medical professional

I'm just me. I just know from my own experiences, and I'm not telling you to follow anything that I'm doing

Go and check it out with your doctor first if you wanted to do anything like this

The diet I've chosen to follow for the next, well, I'm going to try and do it for a long time, but definitely for the next 10 weeks, I'm going to do low carb bordering on keto

Now I have done low carb before. I did it for about six weeks a couple of years ago, got my blood sugar right under control, got my weight down, and then something happened and I just reverted to what I was doing before

So hopefully I can build some good habits and routines and share some nice recipes with you

And I think having to weigh in on video for everyone, every week is going to hold us accountable to it

At the moment I am, like I said, my HBA1c is 84

I'm 5'4 remember. I'm 59. I'm 60 in June. So we weigh in and we save what I weigh and then each week it can say how much I losing or not losing and we take it from there So I just switch the camera to me getting weighed So I 14 stone 12 and a quarter

So 5'4 and 14 stone 12 in a quarter, that is quite overweight

If I knew me BMI, I'm assuming it's going to be, you know, I'm obese

I wear a size 18 to 20 in clothes. and I think if it wasn't for the fact that my diabetes is out of control

I probably wouldn't worry so much about my weight. I'm fairly happy with the way I look, but I'm not happy with my health

You know, I've got two little grandchildren, four and six, and I'd like to be around for them as long as possible

and I'm just not going to be if I don't get this under control. So that is the main reason I'm doing it
