Hi everyone, it's Karen from the Geordie Grandma. Welcome back to my channel. I've just come
0:09
back from the most fantastic week's holiday in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Absolutely beautiful
0:17
place. I took lots of video footage so I decided I would split the videos up into four, I'm
0:27
thinking four different videos. So I've got a hotel tour for you here. That's today's
0:34
video. So a tour of the Commodore Hotel in La Paz in Dubrovnik, where we stayed. And
0:43
then later on, I have a video tour of the resort, the La Paz Resort. So what's there
0:50
to do? A lovely cave bar there. So you can see all that. Then I also have a video of
0:58
the Dubrovnik Old Town, which is a, it's in like, it's a fortified, I think it was like
1:04
a fortified castle within city walls type of thing. Beautiful place. If anybody is a
1:11
Game of Thrones fan, you will know there was a lot of Game of Thrones scenes filmed in
1:17
Dubrovnik. So you'll see where some of those were filmed during my video. I also have a
1:26
video of, I don't know whether I'm going to put this with the Dubrovnik Old Town video
1:32
but it is a, you can walk the city walls, which takes about an hour and a half. Fantastic
1:37
walk. So I've got video of that. And I've also got a video of Lochram Island, which
1:46
is just a five minute boat ride from Dubrovnik Old Town. Absolutely beautiful island. You
1:53
would never expect to see what was on that island just from looking at it. Absolutely
1:59
spectacular. So those videos are coming up. But for today, we have the tour of the Hotel
2:07
Commodore in La Paz, Dubrovnik. So watch that now. So this is our room at the Hotel
2:30
Commodore. We're on the first floor. As you come in the door, we've got a wardrobe. Lots
2:43
of shelving space there. It smells nice in here. It's the wardrobe, got some hangers
2:52
some spare pillows. Place on the bottom to put things. Got a area to put the cases and
3:05
the shoes. A little desk and chair with a mirror above it. A small TV, but probably
3:15
won't be watching TV here. This is the bed. Nice big double bed with a, looks more king
3:24
size than double. It's a little bit dated in here. The room's smallish, but we're not
3:32
going to spend much time in here. That's where you hang your coats. The bed looks clean
3:40
The room looks clean and it does smell nice. A little bedside tables with some bedside
3:49
lights. Turn them on, they do work. And we've got the bathroom. A small bathroom, but it's
4:06
got a nice shower in it. Nice size shower, not too cramped. Loo, places for your towels, sink
4:17
shelf to put toiletries on. Nice big mirror with a light. Shower looks nice and clean
4:27
There's no rain shower, but we've got the main part, so we just need to put that on the hook
4:38
up there. That looks fine. And this, we do have a terrace room rather than a balcony. When we
4:49
first come in, we thought, well, where's the terrace? But the curtains were closed. So behind
4:54
the curtains is a door, sort of French doors. An outer one and the, sorry, inner and outer
5:05
And we just open our door here and we're straight out onto the pool. How fantastic is that? I think
5:16
this is really lovely. And we can even see the sea. I'm really chuffed with that view. I wasn't
5:24
expecting to be able to see the sea as well from our bedroom. But yeah, I'm really pleased with
5:34
that. So we've got a little table and chair out here and some little planters kind of
5:43
cordoning off each sitting area. And then back into the room. Yeah, I'm very pleased with that
6:07
I'll show you a bit more of the hotel later. So I was looking all over for a hairdryer and then
6:13
Warren said it's in the bathroom. I've never seen a hairdryer like that before in a hotel
6:20
Interesting. So this was the view from our terrace. As you can see, there are quite a few sun beds out
6:33
there that people came down and took advantage of. Some little table seating areas. There was quite a
6:38
few balconies on the hotel, but I think we were quite lucky to have a terrace room. There was only
6:44
six of them, but I don't think we would have actually used the pool as much if we'd had a
6:48
balcony room and had to come down to use the pool. It's nice view to the side there with the mountains
6:54
And it had the sea to the front. So that's La Parde you're looking out onto there, which I'll go into in a video later on
7:12
Yes, the view was really nice from that terrace. It was quite quiet as well. There wasn't very many
7:19
people used it in September when we were there. This is me using the pool. The pool isn't heated
7:25
so it is quite cold. It did take your breath away when you got into it. But it was a lovely little
7:32
pool. I could stand up in it where the steps were, but it did get quite deep at the other end
7:38
But there was a ridge around the bottom, like a ledge around the bottom of the pool where you could step onto if you needed to. But yeah, it was definitely a shock to the system when you got in
7:47
there. And it took a minute to kind of warm up. But when you did get out the pool, it was, you know
7:53
20, 29 degrees. So it was warm and you warmed up quite quickly. It did have a really nice feel to
8:00
it at night as well, sitting outside on the terrace with a bottle of wine. We did that a couple of
8:05
nights. Very quiet, just really nice, just a nice feeling sitting out there
8:12
This is the outside dining area of the Commodore Hotel, which I thought was quite nice
8:17
I preferred to sit outside rather than inside for meals or a drink if I was there
8:22
A little bar area as well. Really nice view from the dining area, which I think that was one of the reasons I liked
8:30
sitting out there. That view was really nice, very pretty. The food was included in our hotel stay
8:37
so we did make use of it. It was adequate. It wasn't the best food I've ever had and it wasn't the worst either
8:42
Pastries were nice. I didn't really have the cooked breakfast at all. Warren tried it a couple of
8:47
times and he wasn't that overawed by it. I did have the hard-boiled eggs quite a few times. That was useful
8:57
They could have done with some covers over the food actually, because there was a few
9:02
They could have done with some covers over the food actually, because there was a few
9:06
flies around, so that would have been nice. There were some cereals there, four or five
9:11
different cereals with some milk. They even had soy milk, some jams, some soft cheeses, butter
9:19
ordinary cheese, some meats. They had a selection of fruits. There's some cottage cheese there
9:26
They did have the melon every day, which was nice. Some yogurts. They did have some fruit
9:32
juice machines. They've got some ordinary fruit there, some fruit juice machines, but the
9:37
orange juice was very tangy. They had a couple of coffee machines with quite a good selection of coffees
9:42
in there. That was nice. They did have a selection of herbal teas as well and they've got the toaster
9:49
there if you wanted some toast. The breakfast was served from 7am until 10am in the morning
10:00
It never seemed to be really, really busy, but we were always down there for about 7.15, 7.30
10:06
because we are early risers. It may have got busier later, but they did keep restocking the buffet
10:13
so there was always plenty there to eat. They also did an evening buffet at the hotel from 7pm
10:23
at night until 10pm at night. That was a buffet evening meal, like I said, and that was 20 euros
10:31
if you wanted to have that. We didn't eat in the hotel on evening at all because the restaurants
10:38
in La Paz were just so close to the hotel, so we always went out to eat. The hotel had free Wi-Fi
10:47
and the cleaners came to clean the room every day. They'd change the sheets and clean around
10:54
and empty your bins and change your towels and everything, so that was good. They were really
10:59
friendly, the cleaners as well. So nice, really nice ladies that we met there. The hotel staff
11:08
were a bit abrupt, I have to say. They were friendly enough and helpful, but they were a
11:14
little bit abrupt and they were a little bit slow. So there was one night we did ask, we were going
11:20
to have the buffet and we went and sat in the dining area and asked for a drink and we'd been
11:25
sat for about 10 minutes and the lady had said she would bring us the drinks menu, but she didn't come
11:33
back, so we just didn't bother. So they were a little bit slow. The hotel was dated, it was built
11:43
in 1935 so it was quite an old hotel and you could tell it needs, the rooms especially, do need a
11:51
little bit of maybe updating, maybe a bit of paint. It didn't, like the sockets looked old
11:59
you know, the plug sockets looked old. The bathroom, the shower cubicle leaked
12:08
You know, you go in the shower and you put your bath mat on the floor and you expect to step out
12:12
onto a dry bath mat. I opened the shower door and it was soaking wet, but there was a drain
12:18
in the middle of the bathroom floor. So I'm not sure if it was meant to leak and then go down
12:24
this drain. I don't know, but it wasn't good that you kept getting out of the shower onto a
12:30
soaking wet floor because it didn't look like a wet room. So I'm not sure what was going on there
12:36
The bed is very, very firm. Now I don't like a firm bed, I prefer a softer bed and I found this
12:44
difficult to sleep on. Warren didn't have any issues with it really, but I found that really
12:50
firm. So if you don't like a firm mattress, I think you might struggle with it. The full length
12:56
mirror that's next to the bed, it was very handy for when you're getting dressed and stuff like
13:01
that. But I did have to pull the curtain across it for through the night because I thought if I wake
13:07
up through the night and turn over and look in this mirror, I'm going to think there's somebody
13:11
in the room with us. So I had to close the curtain across it. The room does have air con
13:17
which was really useful because it was very hot while we were there. It was between, I'd say 26
13:23
degrees and 30 degrees every day, very hot. So the air con was really useful and it did work fine
13:30
The vents that they use for, you know, when the air con comes through, they did drip a little bit
13:37
but it wasn't really an issue. If you're looking to style your hair, using that hair dryer in the
13:44
bathroom, you're out of luck. That hair dryer wasn't very good. I don't really do much with
13:52
my hair. I just kind of, you know, run the dryer over it just to dry it and it was adequate for
13:57
that. But if you're wanting to style your hair, I recommend you take your own hair dryer because
14:02
that hair dryer attached to the wall, just, no, it wasn't very good at all. The website does mention
14:10
a pool bar in the hotel. I definitely didn't see a pool bar. Whether going in mid-September or late
14:18
September, maybe the pool bar wasn't open anymore, but it definitely wasn't there when we were there
14:25
There is a couple of sister hotels to the Commodore. I think it's the Adriatic and the
14:30
Uvula. Now I didn't see where the Adriatic was, but the Uvula hotel is just a little way up the
14:36
road from the Commodore. You can use their spa. They've got apparently a really nice spa there
14:42
with treatments and everything like that. And I think the other one, the Adriatic, has tennis
14:48
courts and snorkeling lessons or something like that. We didn't use them, but they were there to
14:55
use if you wanted to. I did really like the hotel. I thought the room had a nice rustic feel to it
15:04
I loved the terrace. I loved the fact that we had that terrace room. I hadn't expected it to be like
15:11
that because when the travel agent sold her the holiday, she was like, oh, well, there's only a
15:17
terrace room left. And she kind of sold it like it was a bad thing, but I was actually pleased we had
15:24
the terrace room. I just thought that was so much better than having a room on a higher floor
15:30
with a balcony where you had to come down and use the pool. So I was happy with the terrace room
15:38
It was a three-star hotel, and I would say, yes, it is a three-star. I wouldn't give it any more
15:43
than that. I found the location of the hotel fantastic. It was within walking distance
15:51
to the restaurants, the beach, the bars, everything like that. And the bus stop into
15:59
Dubrovnik Old Town was literally round the corner from the hotel. They run every 20 minutes from
16:05
five o'clock in the morning until about 10 o'clock at night, and it was only two euros each way to go
16:11
into Dubrovnik Old Town, which we did on quite a few days because there was so much to do there
16:17
So I thought the location of the Hotel Commodore was perfect for us. And it's only a 40-minute
16:24
trip from the airport, which was, I don't even think it took 40 minutes. We were expecting to
16:30
get on a coach when we got into the airport, but we actually got into, it was like a
16:38
people carrier that took about six people. So it was probably quicker than if we'd
16:44
gotten on a coach because we only did three stops, and I think we were the second stop. So I think
16:49
it only took half an hour to get from the airport to the hotel. So yeah, I do recommend the
16:56
Le Pad area, and I do recommend the Commodore Hotel, but just be aware that it is not as
17:05
it is not as luxury and modern as some of the other hotels that you could stay in there. But
17:11
for the price, I think we paid, I think we paid £1,700 for seven nights, obviously included the
17:19
flights, the transfers and breakfast. And I thought that was a really good price for Dubrovnik
17:26
So yeah, I would definitely recommend it. So I hope you enjoyed our tour of the Commodore Hotel
17:34
And as I say, we'll have the other videos coming very soon. So if you haven't already subscribed
