0:00
today I'm going to be talking about six
0:02
types of pennies that you might find in
0:04
your pocket change that are all worth
0:06
more than face value these pennies are
0:08
all collectible and all are worth up to
0:12
a buck and in some cases maybe even more
0:14
than that the six types of pennies that
0:16
we'll be covering in this video include
0:18
the 1943 Lincoln steel sents 1944 steel
0:22
pennies 1909 1958 Lincoln wheat pennies
0:26
pre 1982 copper pennies 1982 copper
0:30
pennies and Indian Head pennies from
0:37
1909 at number one the 1943 steel
0:42
sent be the 1943 steel scent we have one
0:46
right here this is actually not really a
0:48
rare coin but it is a novel coin with a
0:50
NE history to it um more than 1 billion
0:53
with be were struck across the
0:55
Philadelphia Denver and San Francisco
0:57
mint um the story behind this coin is
1:00
that it was created at a time when the
1:02
US was trying to help ration copper for
1:04
World War II ammunitions um in in in
1:08
that vein the US Mint um made 1943
1:11
pennies out of this steel planet and
1:14
it's coated with a zinc um outer
1:17
coating the zinc was used to help
1:19
prevent rusting but unfortunately when
1:21
the coin saw circulation the zinc wore
1:24
off and thus people would have Rusty
1:26
pennies in their pockets and purses uh
1:28
that was not very popular popular did
1:30
not go over well with the public so the
1:31
mint returned in 1944 to making bronze
1:35
pennies a typical 1943 steel cents worth
1:38
5 to 10 cents a piece in circulated
1:41
condition like this one is here uh maybe
1:43
about a buck or so and up in
1:44
uncirculated condition um that brings me
1:47
to the next coin worth looking for
1:49
number two the 1944 steel scent now I
1:53
don't actually have a 44 steel Cent to
1:55
show you unfortunately I wish I did um
1:57
but I don't so what I'm going to do is
1:59
show you 1944 penny right here if you
2:01
see um basically imagine this exact coin
2:07
on a steel Planet okay so the date will
2:10
look the same as it does in the bronze
2:11
Lincoln's head looks the same as it does
2:13
in the bronze but you're going to see
2:17
1940 um or 19 rather 1943 style steel
2:21
scent so again 1944 date and design on a
2:25
1943 steel scent if you find 194 44
2:30
steel Cent it's worth
2:34
up at number three the 1982 Copper Penny
2:39
now you might get fooled or are other
2:41
kinds of of silver colored pennies that
2:44
people might find in circulation a lot
2:47
of times they are coins that were plated
2:49
with silver or peer or even Mercury um
2:53
that's done because people coded the
2:55
coins for novelty sake or sometimes to
2:57
deceive other people and thinking that
2:58
they found a rare silver colored coin um
3:02
if you find a 1982 or later silver
3:05
colored Penny which you actually found
3:07
is a um zinc based Penny basically that
3:11
is lacking its copper coating so I have
3:13
here a zinc based Penny from 20 what
3:17
16 um under this coding right here you'd
3:20
see basically a silver colored uh disc
3:23
or planchet but it looks kind of like
3:25
the steel scent a little bit um two ways
3:28
that these coins are made one outside
3:30
the Mint one inside the mint there is a
3:34
involving um planchets that were not
3:37
properly coed in their copper uh layer
3:40
like you see here those are worth 50
3:42
bucks a up usually however there's a
3:45
very common experiment people can do
3:47
that chemically removes the Copper from
3:49
the zinc core and basically results in a
3:52
coin that would look kind of like the
3:54
steel scent or a silver colored penny
3:56
with the same details and all but
3:58
without the copper coating uh it's
4:00
really difficult to tell for some people
4:02
what a uh chemically altered zinc scent
4:06
looks like versus one that's just
4:07
lacking its copper cating so my
4:09
recommendation to you is to go ahead and
4:10
bring such coins into a coin dealer
4:12
professional who can look at the coin in
4:14
person and judge um using a magnifying
4:18
glass and a chemical analysis exactly
4:21
what happened to that coin to see if
4:23
it's really an error or simply a regular
4:25
zinc penny that was altered by somebody
4:28
Who removed the copper coating coming
4:30
number four wheat pennies from 1909 to
4:33
1958 in general I look for all wheat
4:36
pennies they were made from 1909 to
4:40
1958 uh most are pretty common but
4:43
they're collectible for two reasons
4:45
first of all they are an obsolete design
4:47
they're no longer made uh and two
4:49
because they're made from copper and
4:51
copper is worth more than face value
4:54
today when it comes to pennies generally
4:55
speaking a 19 we'll say 41 Lincoln penni
4:59
is worth like 5 to 10 cents we've got a
5:01
54 here worth 10 to 15 cents most sweet
5:04
pennies are not really worth a whole lot
5:06
of money in wor in condition there are a
5:07
few that I do keep an ey for uh I talk
5:11
about all those rare pennies uh on other
5:14
videos but basically speaking I hold
5:16
aside all Lincoln wheat cents so they
5:19
look like this on the back or the
5:20
reverse you see here the two wheat
5:22
stocks that surround the words 1 Cent
5:24
United States of America Eis
5:27
Unum on the front we see Lincoln with a
5:29
date that ranges from 1909 to
5:32
1958 at number five pre-1982 Lincoln
5:36
Memorial pennies another coin worth
5:38
looking for are all pre-1982 Lincoln
5:41
Memorial pennies now why am I looking
5:43
for those they're very common coins
5:45
after all and we still see some in
5:46
circulation today well let's go back to
5:50
the Copper thing for a second these
5:52
pennies are made from a 95% copper
5:55
composition and their bronze alloy is
5:58
now worth more than face value we're
6:00
talking about 3 cents more or less so
6:03
not a huge value but they are worth more
6:06
than face value so I hang on to all pre
6:09
82 Lincoln pennies now with that being
6:14
1982 there were uh basically two kinds
6:17
of pennies made there were those that
6:18
were made from a zinc composition kind
6:20
of like this one is here from
6:22
2016 and those made from copper like we
6:24
see here with the 50 what is this a 58
6:27
the uh I 1974 here some where did I put
6:30
that anyway oh yeah it's right in front
6:33
of me sorry about that right here got 74
6:36
penny so a copper Lincoln Memorial Penny
6:40
weighs by standard 3.11 G but they don't
6:45
all weigh the same due to tolerances and
6:47
of course wear can actually lower the
6:51
penny generally speaking a copper penny
6:53
should weigh around 3 G more or less
6:56
whereas a zinc Penny weighs two 2.5 g
7:01
now the problem with this if you're
7:02
trying to weigh on a typical kitchen
7:03
scale is the 2.5 g Penny will tend to
7:07
round up to three gr on a scale that
7:09
shows just whole integers like not like
7:11
a fraction like 3.1 or 2.8 but just two
7:15
three so what you might want to do is
7:18
get yourself a coin scale that will
7:19
actually show you a weight readout down
7:22
to at least a tenth of a gram and that
7:24
should help you to Cipher between a zinc
7:26
Penny or a copper penny number six 1859
7:31
to 1909 Indian Head pennies another kind
7:34
of penny I'm looking for Indian Head
7:36
pennies these are made from 1859 to 1909
7:41
and they show on the front a vage of
7:44
Miss Liberty wearing a Native American
7:46
headdress right here as you see they are
7:49
called Indian head sense by tradition
7:51
but it really is a likeness of Mis
7:53
Liberty with a Native American headdress
7:56
on the reverse backside we see here a
7:58
wreath that surround the words 1 cent
8:00
and a shield on top down here on 1908
8:03
1909 Indian head sense there are uh mint
8:07
marks that you'll find right down here
8:09
below the wreath these are made for
8:11
those two years in San Francisco and
8:13
Philadelphia and th you'll see an S
8:16
mintmark for the San Francisco pennies
8:17
and no mint mark for the Philadelphia
8:20
pennies these tend to be worth about a
8:23
buck or two uh in worn condition for the
8:25
later dates basically those from like
8:27
1890 and on with year 1901 actually I
8:30
found in a roll uh I was very shocked to
8:35
find this in a roll uh and this is why I
8:37
do look for these coins in pocket change
8:39
rolls coin jars because you can find
8:42
coins so with that being said those are
8:44
the um pennies I'm looking for and I'm
8:47
going through uh any kind of coins of
8:49
any kind rather they be rolls Pocket
8:51
Change coin jars on the sidewalk I hope
8:55
you look for these two because if you're
8:56
lucky you just might find some worth
8:58
more than face value and you never know
8:59
what you're going to find I hope you
9:00

9:02
pennies worth more than face value if
