Okay, to finish out the employment negotiation video series, I want to address your final
0:10
decision or making the final decision and some things to remember when doing that
0:15
So you've got the job offer, they've thrown out the terms, you've negotiated it back
0:20
and forth. Well, oftentimes you may not have arrived at the terms that are suitable to you
0:28
Well, in most cases it does not pay to settle on something you're not content with
0:35
It creates animosity long term. It can harm your level of motivation or engagement in your duties or responsibilities and it
0:46
can serve to alienate you from the team and you don't achieve that fit that you were going
0:52
for in the organization. Okay. So again, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out
0:58
work out so try not to settle as long as your expectations are reasonable Okay Now take your time in making a decision all right You may be absolutely set and determined but if they gave you a couple of days to make the
1:13
decision, accept it. Take those couple of days. They're not going to pull the job off or back in that period of time
1:20
If they do, that's not the type of firm you want to work for anyway. Okay
1:25
So anyway, take the time they allow you and then... before you come back with decision
1:31
Don't be too hasty. Sit down and actually compare all the positives and negatives of the position. Okay
1:38
Everything that is a valid consideration. Write it down. Okay
1:48
And then you can, it helps you to visualize the decision making process, okay
1:52
Now in the process you'll often hear ultimatums about salary, about, about, you know
1:58
you know I need an answer by today that type of thing Now if that part of the negotiation ignore it during the negotiation Now when negotiations become final and the final offer is on the table of course ultimatums
2:13
are important. But lots of times in the negotiation process, the other party you'll throw out these
2:19
ultimatums like I won't go a penny above $75,000. Well, that may or may not be true
2:26
Try to not acknowledge that that was there. Don't focus on that ultimatum
2:32
continue the negotiation with other benefits and come back to it and you know throw it
2:38
into the conversation so say if we were to go up to say 77 and we were to lower the
2:46
number of vacation days or completely forget about travel expenses here that
2:52
type of thing it brings it back around right if you create a confrontation point
2:58
then if another person creates a confrontation point and you meet it and you draw the line
3:04
there well there little way to move without the other party losing face Well you don want that to happen obviously So again try to make that line as blurry as possible that you understand that that really
3:18
was not a true ultimatum okay and try to in a way that allows the other person to lose
3:25
face because again laying down those ultimatums are are losing tactics in a true negotiation. Okay
3:34
and always stay at the table. All right. Like we said in previous videos, don't take this process personally, all right
3:42
It's just business as they say. And with that in mind, not taking it personally, staying at the table, continuing to try
3:49
to negotiate what's in your best interest and keeping in mind empathetically what is in the
3:57
firm's best interests. Ultimately you will come closer to arriving at an agreeable
4:04
offer or terms of employment
