Okay, continuing on on our series of moving up in the organization
0:04
I want to talk to you a little bit about the role of competency and growth
0:08
Well, obviously in any position you want to demonstrate competency, demonstrate a level of
0:14
proficiency in the skills or duties that you're going to have. Focus on executing given goals, okay
0:24
And again, setting goals for yourself and achieving them within a given time
0:29
period. All right. Again, this level of competency demonstrates a number of things to the organization
0:36
but it proves things to yourself as well. Now, there are technical skills that you can master in the
0:44
execution of your duties. And then there's management skills. Well, management skills is more
0:48
about organization and keeping track of resources and assembling and mobilizing those resources
0:54
as part of your responsibilities. Okay. So those two functions together. together, make up what a business career as you start to move up in an organization
1:08
The management skill itself is a particular competency which is often grouped in together
1:14
with what we call leadership but it really something largely largely different where the management skills yes you becoming proficient in that role or proficient in your overall ability to organize and
1:25
deploy resources and plan for those resources. Where leadership is a little something different
1:31
It involves the people around you in their cognitive aspects. It's how you, through your actions, are able to affect them and their motivations, okay
1:45
management is simply keeping track of them. Leadership is inspiring and motivating them, guiding them in a certain way
1:53
And the unique thing about leadership, you don't even have to be seen as a leader necessarily
1:59
by them. It simply has to be that what you do, your actions, perhaps your management style and the resources
2:05
that you put in place or the message that you orchestrate and put out there is the motivating
2:12
or guiding force. And in that way you are a leader to, even if not commonly seen or the visible captain of
2:22
the football team type leader. You're more the behind the scenes type of leader that makes sure everything's in place
2:30
in moving forward. So these are types of things you have to develop
2:35
A simple competency in a technical skill is not enough all right So as for competency and growth in every position that you take on and as you move up it
2:49
going to require more of you. Your current experiences while you're hoping to get them done for the corporation to, so it
2:58
can achieve its objectives along that portion of the value chain, it's also training
3:03
for you. It's preparing you for more responsibility. The next level. The more we learn, the more we can learn, the more proficient we get in one method
3:12
It allows us to expand and include other methods. So with that in mind, everything is about continuing to learn and continuing to grow
3:22
Create opportunities for yourself. As for new responsibilities, try to expand the scope of your duties and responsibilities even
3:30
within your current position. Too many people take the point of view that, oh, they're not paying me for that
3:36
not within my job description. Those individuals generally don't move up. Okay, it's individuals that are looking for more, that are demonstrating their higher level
3:45
of, not only their current level of competency, but their desire for a higher degree
3:51
of competency and in turn a higher degree of responsibilities. And the benefits the things that fulfill you will come along with that okay Try to be a a problem solver Don be a procrastinator that kicks hard decisions or cans down the road
4:09
Address it. Continue to address it. Try to figure out new ways of looking at it
4:14
Continue to work on the problem. Too many people spend their time avoiding the difficult issues because there's an easier path
4:23
Well sometimes it's the benefits that come from addressing. the problems head on that prepare you and help you learn and grow and move upward further
4:34
And then if you see potential for value in any place, create a role for yourself
4:43
Create a role for yourself capturing that value, okay? If there's a need in this way, shape, or form, become proficient at meeting that need
4:55
Okay, that can expand your role. That can, as we said, create a role for yourself that perhaps previously did not exist
5:05
That again shows a level of leadership, shows an expansion of competence, ability to learn
5:12
and that alone can help move you up in the organization
