Okay, what I'd like to talk to you about now is the concept of job as an opportunity and
0:05
what you have to do to prepare yourself to find jobs. That's what this is about
0:12
We're talking about the necessary steps it takes to prepare yourself to get the job position
0:18
you're looking for and to continue to get jobs that will move you up and along through
0:23
your career. Think about it like this. A job is an opportunity
0:28
One of my favorite quotations ever is by Oprah Winfrey which said, she said that luck is
0:36
nothing but adequate preparation meeting opportunity. Now with that in mind, what I want you to understand about the job position is a job
0:45
is an opportunity and the ability to get that job is you taking advantage of that opportunity
0:52
Now you may not be able to take advantage of that opportunity or that opportunity may
0:56
They never arise if you haven't done or taken the steps necessary to prepare yourself for it
1:04
That can be anything like I say from the educational requirements, work experience, etc
1:11
And then there encountering the opportunity once you done the things necessary to make yourself able to take advantage of it And that the networking the techniques you need to undertake to find or encounter opportunities
1:28
That is why networking is so important. It puts you as part of an interconnected web where another person's needs or another organization's
1:40
needs with regard to creating value within the organization. You yourself are a potential value proposition to them
1:50
That individual organization may not recognize you as a value proposition that they should
1:56
bring on to the workforce to hire if, like I say, you haven't done the things one necessary
2:02
to prepare for it but two to introduce yourself to that person to have someone to vouch for
2:11
to send your resume forward, to mention you to somebody, to give you a positive reference
2:16
or letter of recommendation. So that's part two. So one is preparing for opportunity requirements
2:23
Number two is making the personal connections necessary to encounter opportunities. And then third are the efforts necessary to capitalize on the opportunity
2:34
That is going for what you want seeing what there not sitting back and being shy and waiting for someone to come to you My students frequently when they looking for internships they tell me well I sent out I posted my resume here I sent out an email to so and so places
2:52
Well they didn't undertake anymore effort than that. You have to make the effort necessary to establish the connections that you need and then once
3:02
those connections yield an opportunity to go for that opportunity to the best of your ability
3:09
That is to call the person, to work on your resume and cover letter, to update your LinkedIn
3:16
account to demonstrate your work product that you've prepared in the past either in courses
3:21
or through your prior work experience. To call upon connections or things like that with other individuals to vouch for you, to
3:32
write you a letter of recommendation or in many cases simply to go the extra mile to impress
3:39
the employer. If you're not willing to take those extra steps to do everything from the fine details
3:46
of preparation for an interview, the interview practice, the brushing up on specific skilled
3:51
knowledge to keep yourself abreast of current events and things like that to be more conversationally
3:57
sound when you talking with an individual say in a pre or an interview context All of these things are in preparation for or and in some cases the effort to grab the opportunity
4:13
So, if you're one of these people who are reluctant to go out and visit a place and
4:19
drop off your resume to spend time practicing for the interview or things like that, you're
4:27
not doing yourself justice in that way. You're not taking advantage of a potential opportunity
4:33
that presents itself. So again, just the rehash is doing the things necessary to meet the
4:39
requirements of a potential opportunity, making the connections necessary to help those opportunities
4:45
arises, and then efforts to capitalize on the opportunity to take relationships further
4:51
to get that job interview, to prepare for the job interview, and ultimately set the position
4:57
and then once you're there to do the things necessary to move up or advance in that organization
5:04
or in other organizations that are again along your career paths. We'll visit each of these individually in subsequent videos but I wanted to give you
5:14
an overview to start with and lay the groundwork for the topics that we'll discuss
