A "Pay What You Can" Restaurant in Denmark

all right so the menu today is no chicken shawarma, homemade hummus and bread

tahini and yogurt sauce and french fries or pay as you feel pay what you want pay

what you like pay what you can ah this is amazing so

all right guys so we're here now today would usually be a community dinner

with loads of people sitting down around the tables, eating together, getting to know each other

being a community, but because of COVID and all the restrictions, it's just a takeaway today

So people come, they say however many meals they want, and then there's a donation box

where they just put however much they feel, however much they can, however much they're comfortable with

One cool thing that I really like about Wombo is because the tables are all big, so you

cannot avoid but sit with other people. Because you're in Denmark, in restaurants, people like to sit with each other and like

with your friend and just so on, you know, just two people dining together or more

But here, even if I'm with my friend, I'm kind of sitting next to other people. so very often I have like made friends just by sitting next to them so that was really cool

I really like that idea and then how would they would they just come up to you and say I want to pay this much

no usually the donation box is right there so once they done if they have cash they just to go there and see if they use mobile pay which is usually mobile pay they just use their phones and pay We don really If they want to pay with cash with card that when they approach me

And they're like, hey, I want to pay with card. So that's when I take the terminal and then make them like, okay, how much do you want to pay

Oh, so apart from that, you never ask how much? No, not at all

I don't know. We don't care about that. Just at the end of the day, we count how much money we've gotten for accounting purposes and stuff

And it would be really helpful, actually, if they donate even, like, a little

It would be great for supporting my whole... Definitely. Definitely, definitely. Yes

People can read books and take If they like the book They can just take it

They can return it if they want Or just pick whatever they want

Usually when we're here we also like to play Any of the board games and cards against humanity

With strangers That's quite fun Wow Yeah, I come to One Bowl first of all because I'm vegan and they have delicious vegan food

And of course because we support this kind of community places where there are volunteers that contribute with their time

and they prepare very nice food, affordable for everybody. Because everybody can pay as they feel, as much as they feel

And everybody's welcome. and people that can afford more can pay more and people who cannot afford more can also eat here

So it's fantastic, a fantastic idea. Amazing, thank you so much. Sometimes we see people when they're dining and they just leave like a 500 Kronor bill inside

or 200 Kronor. We're like, we love you but otherwise no, we don't do this here

Oh okay, nice. I kind of support this kind of like you know the restaurants where you pay as you feel So in sort like I mean it a restaurant in unique kind And I do enjoy like I been coming here a couple of times

I mean, the quality of food is like really interesting and very tasty. Welcome to Wanbo. Oh, there's a lot of good reasons. There's more than one

I mean, of course, they got good food, mighty delicious. You will enjoy. also the people here they're very kind and you'll experience people from all

over the world and they'll just welcome you amazing thank you so much

yeah it's just like good concept and lovely food and yeah the whole idea behind it is really

I realized the concept that we can contribute

and other people can have free food. Yeah. And then you're delivering to the homeless shelter

And I think I want to become a volunteer here today. Oh, okay. Amazing

We actually changed our mission statement from pay as you feel to pay what you can

Because we think that that fits it better. It implies that people who have more should give a bit more and people who have less should give just a bit less

So we're actually changing this mission statement right now. But one of the founders of One Bowl is Indian

And in India, it apparently is a big thing to have those communications with the Pacefield concept

just to enable people that are short on money to get some decent food It 28 per month that we need to get in in donations to be able to pay the rent pay the utilities and pay all the food we buying So that like 4 euros

for 5,000 euros. Yeah, pretty much 4,000 euros. Yeah, true. Do you usually hit that mark every

month or are there months where you fall short usually it works out like right now even even

though we're in the corona crisis and people are a bit hesitant to go out and and get food

it works definitely um during springtime when the first lockdown was on it was a big struggle

for sure but in in regular times it works out pretty well oh wow okay

You see this? You made it love. I don't get any love for it

Oh, I do. Oh, wow. Okay. Fair enough. Wow. Most people are actually quite decent then

They'll pay what they can afford and everything will come together. It doesn't attract people that want to exploit this vision in a way

It more attracts people that are on the same eye height, right

that have the same beliefs and the same vision. And I think that's why it works

Wow, okay. So imagine this room now, but full of people, all strangers, eating together at the same long tables

getting to know each other, speaking, sharing a meal together. And then this, being on the side

And after the meal, people paying however much they feel, however much they can in there no questions asked no set amount no judgment just pay however much

you feel how amazing
